Chapter 16

Sky. Why did she keep leaving him? Why was he being injected? Someone was doing this. His mind was so foggy. He tried to force himself to focus. Two voices now. A guy and a woman, but who? Guards? That voice, it came back. What is it saying? It’s talking about Sky. Did it hurt her? ‘Focus,’ he told himself. It was saying it met Sky! No! No, stay away from her! Don’t touch her!            “What’s that? Mumbling again. You know I can’t understand you when you mumble.” Veronica looked at Caleb with disgust.            “Mom, leave him alone. Bally and Jacques were feeding him. Get out so he can have his nutrients,” Scarlett was tired of her mother’s plan. She had no intentions of mating with Caleb. “He must be very strong if he can even mumble with how much silver is in his body.” Most wolves were paralyzed when injected with silver. They would heal once the injections stopped but, Caleb was still able to mumble and attempt to sit up.            “Fine. Feed your pet.” Turning back to Caleb she whispered, “Don’t be sad, you will see her very soon.” “Not Sky, please not Sky,” he mumbled as another needle sank into his arm. His last thought was of her smile before he lost consciousness again.            “Mother, why didn’t you bring her back here when you had her?” Scarlett asked as they walked down the long corridor back to the packhouse.            “I would have Daughter but, once again, our “help” proved incompetent.            “But Mother, I thought you would have injected her with silver.” Scarlett’s mocking tone was meant to anger her mother. She had enough of this plan, this revenge her mother wanted. She wanted to reunite with the pack her father was a part of and reestablish herself as a member of the long-forgotten Luna guard bloodline. It was an ancient bloodline, one which flowed through her veins.            “I would have but she is already carrying his pup!” she roared backhanding Scarlett. “If you would just mate with him, we wouldn’t need her!”            Scarlett rubbed her reddening cheek. “I would have Mother but, that would leave our pack vulnerable while I am carrying a pup.”            “Yes, I suppose you have a point.” She turned to Scarlett, “our plan is working. Soon daughter we will rule over all wolves!” *********************************************************************************** “Yes, for the last time, I am sure that is what they said.” Sky was lying in bed explaining her encounter again. She had been going over every detail for hours now.            “So just tell us one last time,” Gideon coaxed aware of the look his mate was giving him.            “She said I would have to get pregnant with Caleb’s pup so they could take it as their heir. If that didn’t happen, then her daughter would mate with Caleb to give them an heir.” She let out an annoyed sigh. “How much longer do I have to stay in bed?” Sky asked the pack doctor who was packing up his things. “I would like for you to stay in bed for a couple of days but, you should be fine within a few hours. Please, Luna, rest. For the pup’s sake.” Sky rolled to her side feeling the frustration build within her. “Are you sure there is nothing else? Something tiny that you may be forgetting?” Gideon asked for the hundredth time. “NO! Nothing!” she snapped. “Ok, that’s enough,” Evan said standing up and ushering everyone out. Turning back to Sky, “Are you ok? I know this is hard for you.” “I just want him back,” she cried letting the tears of frustration and sadness flow. “Sky, they found the cabin,” he said pulling a chair up next to her bed. “They had set it on fire. There was no sign of Caleb anywhere.” He reached over taking her hand gently. Sky pulled her hand away. Covering her face, she sobbed harder. “Sky? Sky are you alright?” Cherub’s voice floated in from the other side of the door. “Please, come in,” Sky asked her voice shaking with her tears. Evan stood up. “I will let you two talk. I will be on the sofa if you need anything.” He walked out closing the door gently behind him. “Oh honey, don’t cry,” Cherub hugged Sky. “We will find him.” She helped Sky get comfortable before sitting down and rubbing her back. She had almost fallen asleep when the door burst open as Dash flew into the room. “We have a name!” he shouted. “The name of that alpha female is Scarlett, Scarlett Heeler!” “No,” Cherub shrieked covering her mouth with her hands. “It can’t be!” “Who is that?” Evan asked walking in. “That last name is the last name of the she-wolf who tried to kill me! Veronica Heeler. She was exiled from the pack after that. She must have had a daughter.” Cherub had suddenly gone pale. “She was in love with Dean and thought she would be Luna. When Dean met me, his actual mate, she would not accept it. She claimed she was his true mate and the real Luna of the Moon Warriors pack. She vowed to never accept me as her Luna. A few months later, she tried to kill me when she found out I was pregnant with Caleb.” She could feel the anger bubbling inside her as she thought of the woman who tried to kill them both. “We had kept tabs on her in case she ever tried to come back. One day, she seemed to have fallen off the face of the Earth. We had not heard anything from her until now.” She shook her head slowly. “I should have killed her when I had the chance.”            “It isn’t clear if she is indeed the one holding Caleb,” Dash tried to soothe her. “Apparently, her daughter is the one who is supposed to mate with Caleb. At least that used to be the plan. Now it seems they have decided to take Sky’s pup instead. Once the pup is born, they are planning to kill Caleb and Sky.” Sky had stopped crying as she listened. A look of sheer determination on her face. “No one will hurt my child or my mate. I will rip both their throats out.” She wrapped her arms protectively around her middle. “Don’t worry little one, Mommy will protect you.” “Sky?” Cherub asked a look of shock on her face. “Are you pregnant?” She froze. She had assumed everyone knew by now. “Yes,” she whispered looking down at her belly. I found out the day my heat ended. I didn’t tell him because I needed some time to get used to it. Then he disappeared!” She swallowed forcing back the tears. Cherub smiled pulling Sky into her arms. “Baby! I am so happy for you!” She held Sky as if she was the last connection to her son. After everyone had gone, Sky lay awake in bed. There were now guards posted outside her door. There had been no sign of Caleb still. ‘Where could he be?’ She asked herself. She had tried to fall asleep but with the fading scent of Caleb, all she could do was try to think of where he could be. She finally fell into a fitful sleep; she woke up dripping with sweat. “Mirror lake!” How could she have forgotten? Mirror lake had shown Caleb his mate before they had met, maybe now, it could show her where her mate is. Mirror lake was rumored to have been enchanted by the Moon Goddess herself. Legend says it helped the Moon Goddess find her mate when he would hide behind the clouds. She knew it was a long shot, but she had to try. Tomorrow night, she would sneak out, alone. She rolled over trying to rest. ‘Caleb my love, where are you?’ was her last thought as sleep finally came.
