The Word He Feared Most

1887 Words
Evan’s heart pounded violently in his chest. He stood just outside the hospital room door, his hand still gripping the cold metal handle. The words he had just overheard echoed in his mind like a nightmare he couldn’t wake up from. “…the cancer…” His breathing grew shallow. For a moment he thought he had misheard. He had to have. But the silence inside the room felt too heavy. Too real. He pushed the door open. The soft creak of the hinges made both the nurse and his mother turn toward him. Evan stepped inside slowly, his eyes already filled with fear. His voice came out shaky. “Tell me what, Mom?” The room instantly filled with tension. The nurse straightened slightly, sensing the panic rising in him. “Evan,” she said gently, raising her hands a little. “Please calm down—” But Evan barely heard her. His eyes were locked on his mother. “What were you talking about?” Before the nurse could answer, she inhaled to speak, but his mother cut her off quickly. “It’s not serious,” she said, forcing a small smile. “They discovered it early. Everything is fine, Evan—” But Evan froze. His brain stopped processing everything else. There was only one word echoing inside his head. Cancer. He blinked slowly, as if trying to force reality to change. “…Cancer?” His voice came out barely above a whisper. His eyes widened as he stared at his mother. “Mom… you have cancer?” The word alone felt like a knife twisting inside his chest. Memories he had buried for years came rushing back like a violent storm. Hospital rooms. Machines beeping. The smell of antiseptic. His little sister lying weakly in a hospital bed. Her small hand in his. Her tired smile. “I’ll be okay, Evan.” But she wasn’t. And he had watched her fade away. Evan’s breathing quickened. He stepped closer to the bed, panic taking over completely. “Mom, are you okay?” he asked quickly, his voice breaking. “Mom, tell me you’re okay.” His eyes turned desperately to the nurse. “Is she going to be okay?” His voice cracked. “Please tell me she’ll be fine.” His chest rose and fell rapidly. “I can’t— I can’t lose her too.” The nurse looked at him sympathetically, but before she could answer, his mother slowly tried to sit up. “Evan…” But the moment she moved, Evan rushed forward. “Careful,” he said quickly, helping her sit up properly. And then she wrapped her arms around him. Evan immediately buried his face into her shoulder. Like a child seeking safety. Like someone holding onto the only thing he had left. “It’s okay,” she whispered softly, gently stroking the back of his head. “Everything is fine.” Evan’s shoulders trembled. “I’m going to be okay,” she continued softly. “They found it early. I’m starting treatment soon.” She forced warmth into her voice. “It’s not life threatening.” But the words tasted like lies. Because deep down… She knew the truth. The cancer hadn’t just started. It had already spread. The doctors had explained everything to her earlier that day. The surgery she needed was urgent. Without it, the situation could become far worse. But the cost… The numbers alone had made her chest tighten. They didn’t have that kind of money. Not even close. So she had smiled. And told the doctors she needed time. Because the thought of putting that burden on Evan… She couldn’t bear it. Especially not after everything he had already lost. She gently tightened her arms around him. Evan was still crying quietly against her shoulder. Her heart broke hearing it. She closed her eyes. He’s still that little boy, she thought. Still carrying so much pain. After losing his younger sister, she had watched something inside Evan change. The bright, carefree boy he used to be had disappeared for a long time. It had taken years for him to slowly find pieces of happiness again. New friends. A new life. A small smile that returned every once in a while. And now… Bethany. She had seen the way Evan looked whenever that girl’s name was mentioned. For the first time in years… He seemed alive again. She wasn’t going to take that away from him. Not with more bad news. So she continued stroking his hair. “I promise,” she whispered softly. “I’m going to be okay.” Evan nodded weakly against her shoulder. He believed her. Because he needed to. Later That Night Bethany finally reached home. The quiet of her room felt strange after the emotional day she had just had. She dropped her bag on the bed and sat down slowly. Her phone was already in her hand. She typed a short message. I’m home. She stared at the screen for a few seconds. Then pressed send. The message delivered immediately. Bethany smiled faintly. He’s probably helping his mom, she thought. She placed the phone beside her. Minutes passed. Then an hour. Still no reply. She checked the screen again. Nothing. She tried to convince herself it was normal. Maybe his mom had woken up. Maybe the doctors were checking on her. Maybe he had stepped away. But as the hours passed… The small uneasiness in her chest slowly grew. Eventually she dialed his number. The phone rang. And rang. And rang. No answer. Bethany frowned slightly. She hung up and stared at the screen again. “Maybe he’s busy,” she murmured quietly. She wasn’t aware of what had happened after she left the hospital. So she laid back on her bed, trying not to overthink it. His mom is doing okay. That’s what she believed. Back At The Hospital Evan refused to leave his mother’s side. Even after the nurse reminded him visiting hours were nearly over. “I’ll just stay a little longer,” he insisted. He sat beside her bed the entire time. Watching her. Listening to her breathing. Making sure she was still there. The fear of leaving and coming back to an empty bed haunted him. Just like before. But his mother kept reassuring him. “I’m fine,” she said softly. “You need rest too.” Eventually the nurses dimmed the lights in the room. The hospital grew quiet. But Evan remained in the chair beside her bed, his head resting on the edge of the mattress. His mother watched him silently. Her heart ached. Even now… Even after everything… All he cared about was her. She reached out and gently brushed his hair away from his forehead. My sweet boy… The Next Morning Morning arrived faster than expected. Bethany woke up and immediately grabbed her phone. Still no message. Her brows knitted together slightly. “That’s strange…” But she quickly shook the thought away. He’s probably still at the hospital. She got ready for school anyway. Maybe she would see him there. But when she reached the school gates… Evan wasn’t there. She checked the hallways. Still nothing. Her stomach tightened slightly. During break, the group gathered like usual. Ava, Nelson, Cal, and Sarah were all there. But Evan’s seat remained empty. Nelson frowned. “Where’s Evan today?” Cal shrugged. “Yeah, did something happen?” Sarah looked at Bethany. “You went to see him yesterday right?” Bethany hesitated. For a brief moment. Then she forced a small smile. “His mom hasn’t been discharged yet,” she said. “But she’s doing okay.” She kept her voice calm. “He’ll probably come tomorrow… or the next day.” They all seemed satisfied with the answer. All except Ava. Ava didn’t say anything. But her eyes studied Bethany quietly. After School Bethany and Ava walked home together. The afternoon air felt unusually quiet. After a few minutes of silence, Ava finally spoke. “Why did you lie?” Bethany stopped walking. She turned to Ava with surprise. “…What?” Ava crossed her arms slightly. “You heard me.” Bethany blinked. “How did you know I lied?” Ava raised an eyebrow. “You kept checking your phone the entire day in class.” She continued walking slowly. “You barely touched your lunch.” “And you had that long face all day.” She looked back at Bethany. “So now spill it.” Bethany sighed softly. And finally told her everything. About visiting Evan. About seeing his mom. About the hug they shared before she left. About the messages he never replied to. Ava listened quietly. Then she let out a long sigh. “Maybe you should go back to the hospital.” Bethany looked at her. “But this time…” Ava added carefully. “Tell Jake to take you.” Bethany didn’t answer. She just walked quietly beside her. Thinking. Back At The Hospital Evan’s mother looked at him seriously. “You should go to school tomorrow.” Evan shook his head immediately. “No.” “Evan—” “I’m not leaving you here alone.” She sighed. “The nurses are here.” “That’s not the same.” She looked at him firmly. “You shouldn’t miss school because of me.” He opened his mouth to argue again. But she cut him off. “You can visit after school.” They went back and forth for several minutes. Finally… Evan sighed. “Fine.” She smiled gently. “That’s my boy.” Then she added softly, “When you see Bethany tomorrow… greet her for me.” Evan blinked. Bethany. His stomach tightened. His phone. Her messages. Her missed calls. He hadn’t replied to any of them. Guilt crept into his chest. He quickly packed the few things he had brought to the hospital. “Go home and rest,” his mother said gently. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Evan nodded. That Night The taxi dropped him off at the entrance of his street. He stepped out slowly. The cool night air brushed against his face as he began walking home. His phone felt heavy in his pocket. He pulled it out. Bethany’s name stared back at him. Missed calls. Unread messages. He exhaled slowly. Maybe he should call her now. But then his mother’s words echoed in his head. Don’t chase people who truly care about you away. Evan closed his eyes briefly. Then slipped the phone back into his pocket. “I’ll call her when I get home,” he murmured quietly. As he walked down the familiar street… His mind filled with questions. Would his mom really be okay? Would he lose her too? And Bethany… Would she still be there after everything? The future suddenly felt uncertain. Fragile. Like something that could break at any moment. Evan looked up at the dark sky above him. For the first time in a long while… He felt scared of what tomorrow might bring. And deep down… He knew something in his life had already begun to change. He just didn’t know if it would break him… Or make him stronger
