Chapter 5 Her net clutched tightly in her hand, Maggie made her way through the winding streets of tents. She had meant to stop and buy bread before making her way back to the rocks, but Gabriel’s words had frightened her. Now the late afternoon sun seemed tainted by something darker than the approaching night. Whispers on the street sounded more urgent than the usual intrigue and gossip that flowed from the open tents. “Wine for sale,” a man in a crimson robe called as he made his way down the lane. “I’d better not,” the man closest to Maggie said to his companion, “best to be cautious at the moment.” Only a few people had moved toward the man with the wine.
