Elise walked into her office – yes, her office, it wasn’t Adam’s – the next day with a slight swagger. As she strode into the room her hips moved side to side, smiling as Adam came into view. He was writing at the table, not even bothering to look up even though Elise made her presence known when she cleared her throat. So she did it again. And again. And again until he finally looked up at her with an eye roll.
“Can I help you, Elise?” he asked, sounding frustrated. “What do you need?”
“I don’t really need anything. I just wanted to know how you were feeling after yesterday. Are you gonna pounce on me again? Because a girl could use a warning next time,” Elise said with a smile, sitting down across from Adam and crossing her legs.
Scratching at his face, Adam pressed his pen against the table harshly. “I hope you’re not getting your hopes up, Elise. But last night was nothing but s*x. Pointless s*x. It didn’t mean anything. Just because it meant something to you, doesn’t mean I had the same reaction.”
Elise laughed. “You said, and I quote, I’ve been waiting so long for this. How long have you been waiting exactly? Since high school?”
“I’ve been waiting to f**k you because you’re hot. Not because it’s some deep, meaningful thing. Haven’t you ever heard of a pointless hook up, Elise? Haven’t you ever heard of meaningless s*x? I feel like someone like you would be used to that.”
Elise could feel her cheeks going red at his words. Last night he couldn’t get his hands off of her, but now he was acting like he wasn’t the one who had kissed her desperately, but if she thought about it, she had kissed him right back. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I f****d you because you were easy, Elise,” Adam snapped. “It was easy to get with you. Again, it didn’t mean anything, and I don’t see why you would walk into this office acting like I’m some desperate, love sick puppy. Maybe you should try growing up?”
She stood up before he could say anything else, watching as he glared at her from his desk. She knew for a fact that he had said those words to her – but maybe it was intentional? Maybe he just wanted to see how quickly he could get her to spread her legs for him? Clearing her throat, Elise tucked some hair behind her ear, feeling shot down and embarrassed and ready to run away.
“I have a new job for you,” said Adam, tossing a file onto the desk. “These are your finances. You spent a lot of money on things you didn’t need. I need invoices for everything. And I want reports on what exactly you’re using this stuff for. Go. You have work to do. Stop wasting my time by standing there looking at me like that.”
The only reason Elise grabbed the file as quickly as she did was to get away from him. As she darted out of the office, she was certain she felt a little ache in her heart. Had she just been used by Adam Bulken? And if so – why the hell did she care so much?
