The meeting

May 30th, 2021. Augusta, Maine, U.S.A. A beautiful Mercedes swerved to a halt in front of the café that had in recent months started selling meals as well. The Délicieux cafe had began getting good ratings from everyone who stopped by and it had begun getting attention from rich pompous jerks as well, these were the thoughts in her mind as she saw the car park almost in front of the café. The driver obviously had no care for rules or peoples comfort or they would have simply parked in one of the various free parking spaces next to the building. She got a phone call now and saw that it was her best friend Jane who has not called in months since her trip to France. She picked the call hastily and began running to the door, she knew the call would be noisy as usual and did not want to bother the customers having an early dinner at 6pm. She breezed out the door with her cell phone in her right hand and a cup of coffee in the other. Luckily for her the door was always open during work hours. “Hello Jane, the friend who changes friends once borders…” her phone was flying now and falling straight to the floor, her cup of coffee had spilled on the face of the man she had just ran into and she was about to fall. The young man quickly grabbed hold of her and pulled her to him before she fell. She felt really sorry when the realization hit her that she frantically started wiping at his white T-shirt with her bare hands. There was distance between them now and she was stable on her feet, but his hand was still on her waist. She looked up into his eyes noticing that he had been staring intently at her for a while now. He gently took his hands off her and peered down at his shirt which was totally ruined now. She was transfixed, standing before her was the most beautiful person she had ever seen and for some reason, when they looked into each other’s eyes she had felt her heart beat quicken exponentially. He looked at her again “thanks for ruining my favorite shirt.” He said with a hint of sarcasm. He stepped past her and was in the café in an instant, and then he turned around and walked out quickly as though he had forgotten something very important outside. He stepped into the black Mercedes and zoomed off as easily as he had initially parked the car. She picked the phone up and checked the screen for cracks before placing it on her ear; half happy she could finally move and think again. She could hear the concern in her friends voice now “Hey Cam, are you there?” she smiled before replying. “Yes, I am right here and really sorry for scaring you. I just bumped into one of the first really rich looking people to come to the café. He seemed irritated and left just now” she said with a giggle “I don’t think he wants to change his shirt and come back.” “Why would you assume he wants to change his shirt and why do you sound frantic” Jane was confused because she wasn’t used to her friend speaking like a child. “Probably because it is kind of cold here right now or maybe because I just spilled hot coffee on the best looking man on this green planet while trying to find a quiet place so we could talk.” they both began laughing because it was very abnormal for Cam to be a klutz, not even when she met Alistair for the first time. Alistair had to be the best looking person ever, it was just natural. So who could this other man possibly be? June 7th, 2021 The Délicieux café, Augusta, Maine. It had been a week already and although Cam had been to so many places during her free time, she had not seen the Mercedes anywhere in town. Today she was not serving orders, just taking them and then she saw the car pull up and park in one of the free parking spaces. The hot coffee must have done a lot for his manners in the last week she thought to herself, she was smiling now and quickly got control before anyone noticed. He was putting on a black suit today with a black shirt and black shoes, and he took off his jacket immediately he got to a table and folded his sleeves. He said nothing to no one and made no sign of making an order, he just sat there looking around as though committing every persons face and inch of the place to memory. Cam walked calmly to his table and asked him “What would you be having this afternoon sir?” Asking formally, and not smiling. He didn’t look at her, picked up a newspaper on the table and replied lazily “Come back in few minutes and this time, and ask me that with a smile. I think a smile would be wonderful on you” he looked up at her from his table now and gave her a slow, heart melting smile that almost destroyed her composure. She walked away briskly and did not bother to come back that day. Days had gone by without her making at attempt at conversation, those days became weeks and though she was against all forms of embarrassment that came as a result of being friendly she made up her mind to approach him again. Camille Everheart was probably the most emotionally and mentally matured 21 year old lady in the world, and she was very smart and had proven that in school already. For reasons unknown to her, she found herself wanting to do something out of character, things that didn’t seem so smart when carefully thought about. She walked purposefully towards the café where she had been working part-time yearly from January to May for the past three years of her life. This year however, she had extended her working period. It was already the first day of July and she was still working at the café. Seasoned customers had noticed it, her co-workers had noticed and even her parents had begun asking questions. She tried convincing herself it was for the money and had nothing to do with the strange young man who had been frequenting the place for weeks. Her manager had told her to keep working for an increased pay because he had noticed that the very attractive stranger who was actually new in town never spoke to any of the workers till it was her shift. He would order only the most expensive dessert options and never order any real food. Camille was very surprised but secretly happy when the manager told her he always left the café shortly after she left, she was only getting hopeful that he would want to be friends because in reality he only spoke to her while placing orders. Though he only placed orders when she was the one around and that made her happy. He never stared at her like the other men though, she knew how beautiful she was and needed no validation but she really wanted to know this man. Her shift was over and she was going to do it today, she had made up her mind immediately she woke up that day. She locked eyes with the mystery man, took off her apron and started walking towards him slowly. He saw her coming straight towards him, but he wasn’t flustered. He never got flustered, and why would he when it was not in his nature to do so. She got to his table and all he did was keep staring at her and give her a provocative smile, one that he was very famous for where he lived. She sat across him and placed both hands on the table then returned his smile but with a very childish version. They stared at each other for a while and she accepted in her heart that she already liked this man, and there was just something enigmatic about him that drew her in. He was handsome too, heartbreakingly so. Even more handsome than Alistair and that would be a shock to anyone who had seen Alistair. She whispered a “Hi there.” and extended her right hand for a handshake, he set his paper aside and took her hand and planted a kiss on her knuckles that made her look at him with raised brows before smiling. She hoped in her heart the excitement coursing through her was not written all over her face. “Where I am from, that’s how you greet royalty. Handshakes are not permitted. I would much rather like to order something now than have a conversation though, if that’s alright with you?” he said, Camille was totally unprepared for how rude he seemed to be. He was ordering food at this exact moment when she approached him to talk, she had a feeling he was trying to be rude to her for some reason. “You are still angry with me about the coffee incidence sir” she said smiling, but he was confused before understanding dawned on him “No, not at all,” he was laughing lightly now “I just really get hungry around you and I normally don’t have an appetite so I eat whenever it comes. The coffee incidence is totally forgiven, and you’re too beautiful to get me angry.” The sudden complimented was unexpected, what was the actual deal with this young man. She got up so she could take his order but he caught her by the wrist gently “I want the best dessert you have.” “You eat desserts all the time you’re here, today I am getting you actual food sir.” She replied looking very serious and lifting her chin in what he immediately committed to memory as her stubborn and defiant look. “If you agree to join me for the meal, then go ahead. Let’s just make it an impromptu date. Then we can actually have that conversation I know you want to have.” With that said he gave her a pleading look she couldn’t say no to. He was very direct with his speech, but it no longer seemed rude or sarcastic so Camille smiled and went to get him food. He called out after her “Make it one plate of whatever you decide, we’ll be sharing it!” She turned to see him smiling again.
