XIII - Kiss

THIRD PERSON “Shall we?” Songnara held out her elbow, mimicking Lexus’ gesture from last night.   “You do know that the male is supposed to offer his arm.” He raised his eyebrow.   Songnara shrugged.   “Well, I’m the one who’s supposed to be showing you around.” She insisted.   She soon gave up, took Lexus’ hand, and once again dragged him out of the house and into the open air.   “Remember when you first tried to run off?” She laughed.   “You’ve probably wanted to see these mountains for a long time, haven’t you? Are you an outdoor person?” Lexus didn’t answer.   He just took in the fresh breeze and relished in the fact that the sun didn’t burn his skin.   He had always appreciated nature at night, but it had been a decade ever since he actually enjoyed—or even saw the grass, the trees, and the sky during the daytime. He looked up at the sky.   The sun was blinding, but it was tolerable. The trees were bright and green. The grass smelled fresh as if the morning dew had just touched their short blades.   “You certainly aren’t talkative.” She remarked.   “Well, forgive me if I’m so enamoured by this scenery.” Lexus chuckled. Songnara smiled.   “You look like you’ve never seen anything like this before… Strange. My grandfather found you around these mountains, you know.” She said.   The pair stopped in their tracks when they came across a field of poppies.   The air grew colour and blew against Songnara’s long hair.   They both took in the view for a moment.   Lexus was in awe of the sight.   The rich red colours were vibrant, unlike how they were at night, and the way the sun beamed over the field seemed to make the colours saturate even more. It was far from the gloomy view he was so used to seeing.   Songnara knelt and picked a small flower from the available multitudes.   “I just realised... I don’t know much about you.” She said as she stared at the plant.   She turned back to Lexus.   “All I know is that you just came here by chance. So I say you tell me all about yourself.” She sat herself down on the field.   Her dress complimented the bright red colours of the flowers.   “Come on, sit. It’s relaxing.” Lexus sat down in front of her so that they faced each other.   If they had a flask of rum, it would be exactly like one of his nights out with Amelie, but during the daytime.   “Only if you promise to talk about yourself first,” Lexus said.   He didn’t want to answer her questions, and he needed time to think of a cover story.   “Fine. Now sit.” Songnara chuckled.   “Alright. I’m Songnara Lopez, and I used to live in the city with my parents until they both died when I was ten. My grandparents took me in, and I’ve lived around this area ever since. I love it when the weather’s cloudy with a chance of rain, it keeps me anticipating. I like anticipating. My favourite colour is blue, and one day I hope to meet someone I can share the rest of my life with. I’m not necessarily a romantic, but I’m bordering on that. I’m very fond of music, and I love going out to the fair whenever there’s a festival nearby. My favourite flower is a poppy, which is why I chose this spot. My favourite tree is an oak tree, and I especially love trees with a lot of lines on their bark, I think they look extraordinary. I love the full moon, and it makes me feel refreshed. I’d much rather go out and walk here at night than during the day, but I love going out and walking around the mountains nonetheless.” She said, not even pausing to take a breath, explain even further, or let Lexus speak.   “That was fast.” Lexus laughed nervously.   This meant it was time for his interrogation.   He didn’t want to reveal any part of his life to her not only because she could find out that he was a vampire, but also because he hated vulnerability and weakness.   He was narcissistic in that sense. He always wanted to be dominant. He craved that feeling of power, and sharing his life story was not going to give him any power.   “So, let’s unravel the mystery of Lexus…. Do you even have a surname?” She asked, tilting her head to the side.   “B…arcia,” Lexus answered. She probably wouldn’t believe him if he said that he was a Baudelaire.   He wondered what might have happened after he first transformed into a vampire.   Where did they think Alec Baudelaire’s son was right now? Probably not with some pauper on a field of poppies.   “Lexus Barcia. Alright, that’s a good start. Let’s see… Where are you from and how did you end up on these mountains?” He couldn’t answer.   There was no way he could answer that. He first had to formulate a lie.   “Are you an amnesiac?” Songnara asked, unknowingly giving him the perfect cover story.   “I am. I don’t know who I am and where I came from. The first thing I remember is….” Lexus trailed off and looked down. He picked a poppy from the field, one that was bigger than what Songnara was holding.   “It is?” Songnara asked, her eyes widening.   “Your face. I remember your face.” He placed the poppy behind her ear and smiled. It suited her.   Songnara blushed and looked down.   “But you remember your name.” She said.   She looked back up at him.   “How do you remember your name?” Lexus was tired of trying to come up with lies and cover stories.   He knew that he somehow enamoured Songnara, so he did what he knew how to do best—distract her from asking any more questions.   Without warning, he lifted her chin and kissed her, so that she would stop talking.   Once he pulled away, Songnara immediately started talking again.   “You didn’t answer my…” Lexus kissed her again, more vigorously this time, so she could forget about what she was supposed to ask him.   Maybe it needed to last longer.
