XII - Family

THIRD PERSON “Well, after you collapsed, I decided that I needed to take you home, but there was no way I could carry you back here. So they had no choice but to send their carriage.” Songnara explained.   She started laughing, which, for the second time, made Lexus smile. Her slightly rambunctious and playful nature no longer annoyed him. He was slowly growing fond of it.   “I’m sorry, I just… You were asleep on my lap the whole trip, and you looked so funny!” She exclaimed.   “I can still remember your face…” The girl shook her head.   “Anyway, Grandma and Grandpa were furious when I got home because it was so late, but when they saw you, they immediately brought you here, to my room. I told them about the whole garlic incident, and they joked about you being a vampire.” Lexus’ smile turned into a frown.   “Excuse me?” He asked. Songnara felt his mood shift and cleared her throat.   “Well, vampires are these mythical creatures with fangs who suck the blood out of people, and they’re allergic to steel, garlic, and the sun. There are lots of tales about them,” she explained.   “Did you never hear any? Oh, I think I remember one… There was once a vampire who…”   “No, I don’t want to hear a story,” Lexus said bluntly. He was glad that they didn’t suspect him of being a vampire. Or did they?   “And I’m not, okay?” He said, wanting to make sure that it was clear.   “You’re not...?”   “I’m not a vampire.” His face was cold and stoic, the way it usually was.   Songnara burst out laughing.   “Oh my gosh, of course, you aren’t! Vampires don’t exist!” She exclaimed.   “But imagine if you were!” Her eyes widened in amusement. Lexus sighed.   Here we go again.   Songnara stood up and hopped on the bed, much to Lexus’ annoyance. What was she doing? He immediately lay back down and tried to move as far from her as possible.   “Would you suck my blood, mister Vampire?” She teased.   Their faces were now inches apart. For some reason, Lexus wanted it to stay that way. He felt like doing something—anything, to somehow preserve the moment.   He looked directly into her eyes than to her lips.   No. That would be stupid.   Just because he had a dream about Amelie doesn’t mean he should go around making out with Songnara.   “Alright, that’s enough fantasising for today.” He grabbed her by the waist and set her back down. Finally, his strength was ago.   Songnara pouted playfully and smiled once again.   “Wait, what time is it? I think I have to get to work…”   “No, you’re excused for today. Besides, Minay thinks that you should rest. Take advantage of her kindness.” She said.   “But I’m fully functional. See?” Lexus stood up from the bed and opened up his arms as if to show her his figure. “That’s great, then! Maybe we could do something else today. You’re not allergic to flowers, are you?” Songnara asked.   “I’m not going flower-picking with you.” Lexus scoffed.   “Well, at least come and have breakfast then.” Songnara took his hand and pulled him to the dining room. They were greeted by her grandparents, who both had scowls on their faces.   “You didn’t do anything to our granddaughter, did you?” Her grandfather asked.   Lexus’ eyes widened. Why would they even think that?   “No, of course not. I wouldn’t even think about it.” Lexus replied.   It was different with her. Back when he was a vampire, he often looked at girls as objects meant to be played with, not as humans.   Even now as a newly-transformed mortal, he felt that sort of lust for Snow when she wore that tight dress. But with Songnara, it was different.   He just genuinely enjoyed her company, and he didn’t think twice about it. It was rare for him to feel the way he did.   “Good. Take a seat, have breakfast. You’re not allergic to eggs, are you?” Songnara’s grandfather started laughing, and so did her grandmother and Songnara herself.   They were quite the family.   “No, garlic is the only thing I’m allergic to.” Lexus rolled his eyes playfully and took a seat.   Songnara served him an egg and Java rice.   “Señor, your main course.” She chuckled.   The corners of his mouth turned up ever so slightly. The aroma was far from that of Señorita Snow’s place.   The smell of fresh eggs and cooking oil wafted across the kitchen, and the three people that would be sharing a meal with Lexus were also serving his food.   The three sat down the small circular table with bright smiles on their faces.   The whole atmosphere was far from the posh formalities of the previous night, and Lexus preferred it this way. There were no snide remarks between family members.   No formalities. Just four people are eating and having a good time together, joking, and laughing.   So this was what a family felt like. For a moment, he didn’t care about the prophecy or about why he was there. He was just happy. It had been a while since he last felt that way.   Unfortunately, like many other things in life, it didn’t last. It couldn’t.   After breakfast, the household got ready to resume their daily routine.   As he got into his clothes, Lexus realised that time was of the essence. He kept telling himself that at first, but he got distracted by everything.   By “everything” he meant Songnara. There was something so intriguing about her that made him want to spend even more time with her.   Maybe if he weren’t originally a vampire, things would be different. Unfortunately, that was not the case.   “Songnara, darling, why don’t you show Lexus around the mountains?” Sognara’s grandmother suggested.   “After all, it’s not every day that he gets a day off from work.”   “Of course, Grandma,” Sognara replied as she emerged from her room.   She was in a white dress, and her hair was in a half-up-half-down hairstyle with two long locks framing her face.   Maybe he was just looking for an excuse to spend more time with the mortal girl, but he obliged.   Maybe he could find my answers out in the mountains. Or perhaps he could just run off somewhere else.   Somewhere closer to the woman from the prophecy. But where could that be? He didn’t know where to go.   He didn’t know what to do or who to talk to.   There was no way of finding out whether there was ever going to be a blood moon.
