Three knocks.
No more.
No less.
The sound echoed through the mansion like a countdown.
Every guard in the entrance hall raised their weapons.
The stranger waited patiently on the other side of the massive iron doors.
Lucien didn’t move.
He simply stared toward the entrance as though he could already see the man standing outside.
Adrian broke the silence.
“Boss.”
Lucien finally spoke.
“Open the cameras.”
A security officer pressed a button.
The main monitor flickered to life.
The front gate appeared on the screen.
Standing alone beneath the rain was a man in his early fifties.
He wore a charcoal overcoat and carried a polished wooden cane.
Unlike Viktor, there were no armed men behind him.
No convoy.
No visible threat.
He stood alone.
Yet every instinct in the room screamed danger.
The man’s silver hair was neatly combed despite the rain.
A pair of leather gloves covered his hands.
Most unsettling of all…
He was smiling.
Not arrogantly.
Patiently.
As though he already knew exactly how the evening would end.
Elena frowned.
“I’ve never seen him before.”
Lucien answered quietly.
“I have.”
“Who is he?”
The Wolf didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he asked Adrian a question.
“Has the perimeter been checked?”
“Twice.”
“Snipers?”
“In position.”
“Thermals?”
“Clear.”
Lucien nodded once.
“Interesting.”
Elena looked between them.
“Who is he?”
Lucien finally answered.
“Sebastian Moreau.”
The name meant nothing to her.
It meant everything to Amelia.
She gasped.
“No…”
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“It can’t be.”
Sebastian looked directly into one of the security cameras.
Then…
He tipped his hat politely.
As though greeting old friends.
“He knows we’re watching,” Adrian muttered.
“He wants us to.”
Lucien folded his arms.
“He always did enjoy an audience.”
Elena stepped closer to the screen.
“What does he want?”
Lucien’s expression darkened.
“Whatever he came for…”
He paused.
“…it isn’t me.”
A knock echoed through the front doors again.
This time only once.
The intercom buzzed.
“Mr. Devereaux.”
Sebastian’s voice was smooth.
Cultured.
Almost gentle.
“I don’t enjoy standing in the rain.”
Lucien pressed the response button.
“You’ll survive.”
A quiet chuckle came through the speaker.
“Still stubborn.”
“And you’re still unwelcome.”
“I’ve brought information.”
“So email it.”
Another chuckle.
“This concerns Elena.”
Lucien’s jaw tightened.
“So does every problem in this city.”
Sebastian didn’t deny it.
Instead, he said something that made the room fall silent.
“I have the second key.”
Elena frowned.
“What key?”
Lucien’s eyes narrowed.
Adrian looked confused.
Even Amelia seemed shocked.
Sebastian continued.
“I believe Miss Carter already possesses the first.”
His gaze seemed to pierce straight through the cameras.
“The silver key Amelia gave her.”
Elena instinctively reached into her pocket.
Her fingers closed around the small silver key Amelia had handed her earlier.
How could he possibly know about it?
Amelia looked horrified.
“He’s watching us.”
Lucien’s expression remained unreadable.
“No.”
He spoke quietly.
“He doesn’t need to.”
“What does that mean?”
“He already knows the plan.”
Elena turned sharply toward Amelia.
“What plan?”
Amelia lowered her eyes.
“There wasn’t supposed to be one anymore.”
Sebastian smiled faintly through the monitor.
“I see we’re finally catching up.”
Lucien looked at the security team.
“Unlock the front gate.”
Adrian stared at him.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Boss, that could be exactly what he wants.”
“It is.”
“Then why—”
Lucien’s lips curved into the faintest smile Elena had ever seen.
Not warm.
Not amused.
Dangerous.
“The man outside has spent thirty years believing he always wins.”
His smile widened just enough to unsettle everyone in the room.
“It’s time he remembers…”
Lucien reached for the holster beneath his jacket.
“…what happens when a wolf is cornered.”
Elena looked at him in surprise.
“You smiled.”
He glanced at her briefly.
“Did I?”
She nodded.
“I thought wolves only smiled when they were winning.”
Lucien’s gray eyes returned to the monitor.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“The smartest ones smile…”
The mansion doors slowly began to unlock.
“…when they’re losing.”
Outside, Sebastian heard the heavy locks disengage.
His own smile deepened.
Neither man realized the same thing.
They had each opened the door…
For exactly the person the other wanted most.
The massive front doors swung inward with a low groan.
Rain-soaked wind swept through the entrance hall.
Sebastian Moreau stepped inside without hesitation, removing his gloves one finger at a time. He moved with the confidence of a man who had never been refused anything for long.
His sharp blue eyes immediately found Elena.
For a brief second…
Something almost like relief crossed his face.
“There you are.”
Elena instinctively took a step back.
“I don’t know you.”
“No.”
His smile was faint.
“You wouldn’t.”
Lucien stepped between them.
“You’ll speak to me.”
Sebastian looked at him and inclined his head politely.
“Lucien.”
“Sebastian.”
The two men stood only a few feet apart.
Neither reached for a weapon.
Neither blinked.
The tension between them was enough to silence the entire hall.
Finally, Sebastian sighed.
“You’ve aged.”
“So have you.”
“I wear it better.”
Adrian shifted his weight, clearly ready to intervene if necessary.
Sebastian noticed.
“You must be Adrian.”
Adrian frowned.
“We’ve never met.”
“I’ve heard enough.”
His attention returned to Lucien.
“You’ve built quite an empire.”
“I didn’t invite you here to admire the architecture.”
“No.”
Sebastian’s eyes drifted once more to Elena.
“You invited me because of the key.”
Without taking his eyes off Sebastian, Lucien held out his hand.
“Show me.”
Sebastian reached into the inner pocket of his coat.
Half the guards raised their rifles.
He ignored them and produced a small brass key.
It was almost identical to the silver one in Elena’s pocket.
The same wolf engraving.
The same crescent moon.
Only the metal was different.
Sebastian held it up between two fingers.
“The second key.”
Elena looked from the brass key to her silver one.
“What do they unlock?”
Sebastian smiled.
“A promise.”
Lucien’s expression remained cold.
“Enough games.”
“They’re not games.”
“They always are with you.”
Sebastian let out a quiet laugh.
“I suppose I deserve that.”
He carefully placed the brass key on a nearby table and stepped away from it.
“There.”
“No tricks?”
“Not today.”
Elena looked at Amelia.
“You’ve seen these before.”
Amelia nodded reluctantly.
“Once.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“What do they open?”
Amelia’s lips parted, but no words came.
Sebastian answered instead.
“A vault.”
Lucien’s gaze hardened.
“You swore you’d never speak of it.”
“I also swore I’d never come back.”
Sebastian looked around the mansion slowly.
“We’ve both broken promises.”
The room fell silent again.
A security officer suddenly hurried down the staircase, breathing hard.
“Boss!”
Lucien turned.
“What is it?”
“The surveillance team just found something.”
“What?”
The guard handed Adrian a tablet.
Adrian’s expression changed instantly.
He looked at Lucien.
“You need to see this.”
Lucien took the tablet.
The screen displayed a live drone image from high above the estate.
Dozens of black vehicles were converging on the surrounding roads.
Not three.
Not ten.
At least forty.
“They’ve surrounded us,” Adrian said quietly.
Sebastian didn’t look surprised.
“I told you I wasn’t your enemy tonight.”
Lucien looked up sharply.
“If that’s true…”
His voice was calm but edged with steel.
“…whose army is outside my gates?”
Sebastian’s smile disappeared for the first time since his arrival.
“They don’t belong to Viktor.”
“Then who?”
A single name left Sebastian’s lips.
“The Directorate.”
Amelia closed her eyes.
Adrian’s face drained of color.
Even Lucien’s composure faltered for the briefest moment.
Elena looked around in confusion.
“What is the Directorate?”
No one answered immediately.
Outside, the first armored vehicle rolled to a stop beyond the mansion gates.
Its headlights cut through the rain.
Then another.
And another.
Over the radio came a chilling report from the perimeter guards.
“Boss…”
A long pause.
“They’re not asking to come in.”
Lucien already knew the answer before the guard spoke again.
“They’re preparing to take the estate by force.”
The Wolf’s kingdom was no longer under attack by rivals.
It had just become the target of something far bigger.
