Her First Mistake Was Looking Back

1407 Words
The convoy disappeared through the iron gates. Elena stood on the front steps of the mansion, watching the last black SUV vanish into the storm. Something about the sight unsettled her. Lucien hadn’t looked back. Not once. “He never does that,” Adrian said, appearing beside her. She folded her arms. “Does what?” “Look back.” She turned to him. “Why?” Adrian slipped his hands into his pockets. “Kings who keep looking behind them usually don’t live very long.” The gates groaned shut. The estate fell into an uneasy silence. Elena hugged herself against the cool morning breeze. “So… what am I supposed to do now?” Adrian smiled. “Preferably? Stay alive.” She rolled her eyes. “I’m serious.” “So am I.” He gestured toward the mansion. “Come on.” Reluctantly, Elena followed him inside. The grand hall was already buzzing with activity. Staff hurried from room to room. Guards rotated shifts. Phones rang continuously. It felt less like a home and more like the headquarters of a private army. “You really weren’t exaggerating,” she murmured. “No.” Adrian led her through a long corridor lined with portraits. Each painting depicted wolves beneath a full moon. None of them showed people. “Does Lucien really like wolves that much?” Adrian chuckled. “They’re not decorations.” “What are they?” “A reminder.” “Of what?” “Never trust a smiling predator.” They reached a pair of heavy wooden doors. Adrian pushed them open. Elena stepped into what appeared to be an enormous library. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, filled with thousands of books. Leather chairs surrounded a roaring fireplace. Sunlight poured through towering windows. She stopped in surprise. “I thought criminals didn’t read.” Adrian laughed. “I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.” Her eyes wandered across the shelves. History. Politics. Economics. Military strategy. Law. Psychology. “This is…” She struggled to find the right word. “Incredible.” “Lucien reads every day.” She looked at him skeptically. “The man carrying guns and threatening people?” “The same one.” Before she could respond, a loud alarm echoed throughout the mansion. Red lights flashed across the ceiling. Every guard in the hallway froze for half a second before springing into action. Adrian pressed a finger against the earpiece hidden beneath his hair. “What happened?” A voice answered urgently. “Perimeter breach!” “Which side?” “The north wall.” Adrian’s relaxed expression disappeared. “Stay here,” he ordered Elena. “I’m coming with you.” “No.” “I’m tired of people telling me what to do.” She pushed past him and hurried into the hallway. “Elena!” She ignored him. Her footsteps echoed across the marble floor as she followed the sound of shouting. She reached the courtyard just as two guards tackled a masked figure to the ground. The intruder fought wildly, trying to break free. A pistol slid across the pavement. One of the guards picked it up. “Clear!” The masked man laughed. Actually laughed. Then his eyes landed on Elena. “There you are.” A chill ran down her spine. “You’ve been difficult to find.” “I don’t know you.” “You don’t remember me.” His voice carried an unsettling confidence. “But your father certainly does.” Before anyone could stop him, the prisoner reached into his jacket. A guard shouted. “Weapon!” The man pulled out… Not a gun. A small silver locket. He threw it toward Elena. It landed at her feet. She stared at it in confusion. “What is this?” The prisoner smiled through bloodied lips. “The reason everyone wants you.” The next second— A single gunshot rang out. The prisoner collapsed. Dead before he hit the ground. Silence swallowed the courtyard. Every guard instinctively searched for the shooter. But the bullet hadn’t come from inside the estate. It had come from somewhere beyond the walls. A sniper. Hidden. Watching. Adrian grabbed Elena’s arm and pulled her behind a stone pillar. “Down!” Another shot shattered a nearby window. Glass rained across the courtyard. Chaos erupted. Guards scattered into defensive positions. The sniper had only fired twice. Yet the message was unmistakable. Someone was willing to kill their own man… Just to keep Elena from learning the truth. Still crouched behind the pillar, Elena looked down at the silver locket clutched tightly in her hand. With trembling fingers, she opened it. Inside was a faded photograph. A little girl, no older than five. Standing beside a woman she recognized instantly. Her mother. And next to them… A man Elena had never seen before. The picture slipped in her shaking hands. Her voice barely escaped. “Who… is he?” Adrian took the locket from her with surprising gentleness. His blue eyes narrowed as he examined the faded photograph. “I’ve never seen this before.” Elena reached for it immediately. “It’s mine.” He hesitated before placing it back in her hand. “You need to show Lucien.” “I don’t need to show him anything.” “You do if you want answers.” She looked down at the tiny picture again. Her mother was smiling. Elena remembered that smile. Warm. Kind. Safe. But the man standing beside them… His face was unfamiliar. He rested one hand protectively on her mother’s shoulder while the young Elena sat happily in his arms. It looked like a family photograph. Except it wasn’t the family she remembered. A cold knot formed in her stomach. “My father never mentioned him.” Adrian didn’t answer. His silence said enough. A guard jogged toward them. “The perimeter is secure.” “And the sniper?” “Gone.” Adrian muttered a curse under his breath. “They planned this perfectly.” Elena looked up. “What do you mean?” “The masked man was never supposed to leave here alive.” “He came just to give me this?” Adrian nodded slowly. “It looks that way.” Her thoughts raced. Why would someone risk breaking into the Wolf’s estate just to deliver an old locket? Unless… The photograph meant something. Something worth killing to protect. Another black SUV sped through the front gates. Its tires screeched to a stop in the courtyard. Lucien stepped out before the vehicle had fully halted. His sharp eyes swept across the scene. The broken window. The dead intruder. The shaken guards. Then they found Elena. He crossed the distance in seconds. “Are you hurt?” She blinked. “No.” He looked her over anyway, checking for injuries with quick, practiced movements. Only after satisfying himself that she was unharmed did he turn to Adrian. “Report.” Adrian explained everything, ending with the sniper’s escape and the mysterious locket. Lucien held out his hand. Elena hesitated. “Trust me.” She almost laughed at the irony. After everything that had happened, trust was the last thing she felt. Still, she handed him the locket. The moment Lucien opened it, something changed. For the first time since she’d met him… He looked genuinely shocked. It lasted only a heartbeat. Then his expression hardened once more. “You know him,” Elena said. It wasn’t a question. Lucien closed the locket carefully. “I know of him.” “Who is he?” He slipped the locket into his coat pocket. “I’ll tell you.” Relief washed over her. Finally. An answer. “But not here.” She frowned. “Why not?” Lucien glanced toward the high walls surrounding the estate. “Because if this photograph has resurfaced…” His voice lowered. “…then someone has uncovered a secret that was buried more than twenty years ago.” Elena’s pulse quickened. “What secret?” Lucien looked directly into her eyes. “The kind people build empires…” He paused, his jaw tightening. “…and start wars to keep hidden.” The courtyard fell silent once again. Elena suddenly realized her life had never been ordinary. Someone had erased pieces of her past. And today… Those missing pieces had begun to find their way back.
