Marked Without Consent

The mansion remained on high alert long after Cassandra left. No one celebrated. No one relaxed. Lucien knew better. Cassandra Vale never made a move without planning three more. Rain continued to fall outside, washing blood from the stone steps leading to the estate. Inside, the atmosphere felt even heavier. Elena stood alone in the library, staring at the old photograph. Five smiling faces. Five people who had once sworn an oath. Now they were scattered by lies, secrets, and war. A soft knock came at the open door. “You’ve been hiding.” She looked up. It was Adrian. “I’ve been thinking.” “That’s usually more dangerous.” A faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “So I’ve been told.” Adrian stepped inside, carrying two steaming mugs. “I figured neither of us was going to sleep.” He handed one to her. She accepted it gratefully. “Tea?” “Coffee would’ve kept you awake until tomorrow.” She laughed quietly. “Fair point.” For a few moments, neither of them spoke. Finally, Adrian broke the silence. “You don’t trust him.” Elena traced the rim of her mug. “I don’t know if I should.” “He knows.” She looked at him. “And?” “And he isn’t asking you to.” That surprised her. “He told you that?” “No.” Adrian leaned against a bookshelf. “I’ve known Lucien for fifteen years.” He glanced toward the hallway. “Trust is the one thing he’s never demanded.” Elena looked down at the photograph again. “Was he always like this?” “No.” “What was he like?” Adrian smiled faintly. “He laughed.” She blinked. “You’re joking.” “I’m not.” “He smiled more.” “He argued over football.” “He once burned an entire dinner because he insisted he could cook.” Despite everything, Elena laughed. “I don’t believe that.” “I have photographs.” She shook her head. “Now I definitely don’t believe you.” Adrian chuckled. “For a while…” His smile slowly faded. “…he looked like any other man.” “What changed?” The laughter disappeared from his eyes. “The same thing that changes everyone in this world.” “Loss.” Before Elena could ask another question, alarms suddenly blared throughout the mansion. Not the emergency alarms. Different. Slower. More deliberate. Adrian’s expression changed instantly. “Stay here.” “What is that?” He looked toward the ceiling. “Someone crossed the eastern perimeter.” A voice echoed through the estate’s intercom. Security breach. East garden. All units respond immediately. Footsteps thundered through the hallways as guards rushed toward their positions. Elena followed Adrian despite his protests. They reached the grand staircase just as Lucien entered from the opposite corridor. His suit jacket was gone. A shoulder holster rested beneath his black shirt. “What happened?” Adrian asked. “One intruder.” “Only one?” Lucien nodded. “Unarmed.” “That’s unusual.” “It gets stranger.” He held up a small velvet box. “It was delivered by the intruder.” Elena frowned. “They broke into your estate to deliver a box?” “They surrendered immediately afterward.” Adrian looked confused. “Where are they now?” Lucien’s expression darkened. “Dead.” “What?” “They swallowed poison before my men could question them.” Silence. Lucien slowly opened the velvet box. Inside rested a delicate silver bracelet. Its design was beautiful. Intertwined vines wrapped around a small wolf-shaped charm. Engraved on the inside were four words. She belongs to us. Elena’s stomach tightened. Lucien closed the box with a sharp snap. “No.” He handed it to Adrian. “Destroy it.” Elena stepped forward. “Wait.” Lucien looked at her. “What?” “If it’s evidence…” “It isn’t.” “How do you know?” His gray eyes met hers. “Because it isn’t a gift.” He paused. “It’s a mark.” Confused, Elena frowned. “A mark?” Amelia, who had just entered the hall, went completely pale when she saw the bracelet. “Oh, no…” She whispered the words under her breath. Lucien immediately noticed. “You recognize it.” Amelia nodded weakly. “I prayed they’d never use one again.” Elena looked between them. “What does it mean?” Amelia struggled to answer. Finally, she whispered, “In the old days…” Her voice trembled. “…they placed those bracelets on children they intended to claim.” The words echoed through the hall. Elena instinctively stepped back. Lucien’s expression turned colder than she’d ever seen. He took the bracelet back from Adrian. Without another word, he dropped it onto the marble floor. Then he crushed it beneath the heel of his shoe. The silver snapped in half. His voice was low. Controlled. Deadly. “No one marks what’s under my protection.” Across the city, hidden beneath an abandoned cathedral, a man watched the mansion through a live drone feed. He smiled as the bracelet broke. “Good.” He leaned back in his chair. “The Wolf finally showed his teeth.” Another figure stepped from the shadows. “Phase Two?” The man nodded. “Yes.” He looked at Elena’s image frozen on the screen. “She’s beginning to choose him.” A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face. “Now let’s make her regret it.” The drone feed flickered as the operator adjusted the camera. The hidden chamber beneath the abandoned cathedral was lit only by computer screens and candlelight. Maps covered the stone walls, each one marked with circles, arrows, and photographs. At the center of them all… Was Elena. Recent pictures. Old school records. Hospital files. Even childhood drawings. The mysterious man rose from his chair and walked toward the largest photograph. He gently brushed a speck of dust from its surface. “So much effort,” he murmured. “So many years.” The second figure remained in the shadows. “Should we activate the remaining sleepers?” “Not yet.” “The Wolf is becoming unpredictable.” “He always was.” The man folded his hands behind his back. “But unpredictability creates opportunity.” He smiled faintly. “Lucien thinks he’s protecting her.” “Aren’t we counting on that?” “Exactly.” Back at the mansion, Elena stood on the balcony outside the library, unable to calm her racing thoughts. The cool night air carried the scent of rain-soaked earth. She looked down at the crushed remains of the silver bracelet still lying on the marble floor below. A mark. A claim. Something placed on children. She wrapped her arms around herself. “Couldn’t sleep?” Lucien’s voice came from behind her. She didn’t turn around. “No.” He stepped onto the balcony beside her. For several moments, they simply listened to the rain. Finally, Elena spoke. “When I was little…” She kept her eyes on the gardens. “I used to think monsters lived under my bed.” Lucien remained silent. “My father would check every night.” A sad smile crossed her face. “He’d tell me there was nothing there.” She swallowed. “I believed him.” Lucien rested his hands on the stone railing. “And now?” She laughed quietly, though there was no humor in it. “Now I know monsters don’t hide under beds.” “They hide behind promises.” His words made her look at him. For the first time, she noticed how exhausted he looked. The dark circles beneath his eyes. The small cut near his temple. The dried blood still staining the cuff of his shirt. “You haven’t rested either.” “No.” “Because of me?” Lucien looked out into the darkness beyond the estate walls. “Because every hour they’re not attacking…” His voice was calm, almost too calm. “…means they’re planning something worse.” As if the night itself had heard him, a single gunshot echoed from somewhere beyond the estate. Then another. Then a third. Adrian’s voice immediately came over the security radio. “Boss.” Lucien reached for the earpiece. “Report.” A tense silence followed before Adrian answered. “We’ve just found another body.” Lucien’s expression hardened. “Who is it?” Adrian’s reply sent a chill through the quiet night. “The man was carrying an envelope.” A pause. “It’s addressed to Elena.”
