unexpected encounter
Chapter 1 The city streets of Shoreditch buzzed with mid morning traffic. Horns blared, and exhaust fumes curled into the humid air, mixing with the scent of fresh coffee from a nearby Cafe. Sandra sprinted across the road, her sneakers splashing through a shallow puddle left by last night’s rain, shouting, Hey Ryan,Ryan Her breath came out in quick, shallow bursts, and the sun glinted off the wet pavement, making her eyes squint. On the opposite curb, Ryan stood in a sharp black suit, tie knotted tight, a sleek suitcase clutched to his side. He was about to slide into his car when Sandra caught up, breathless and eyes wide. Hey Ryan, how are you I’ve been calling and texting, but you didn’t answer, she said, voice trembling. Her heart pounded in her chest like a drum, and she could feel the heat of the sun on her skin contrasted with the chill of his cold demeanor. Ryan turned, his face dark with anger. Sorry, I was busy. What do you want, he snapped, the words cutting through the street noise like a knife. His eyes were distant, as if he was somewhere else entirely. Sandra’s heart skipped. What’s gotten into him, she thought, feeling the heat of the sun and the chill of his attitude at once. She could smell the faint scent of his cologne cedar and smoke mixed with the smell of car exhaust. He glanced at his watch. You have nothing to say. I’m off to work it's past seven already, he said, slipping into his car and driving away, leaving Sandra standing on the curb, tears rolling down her cheeks as she stared at the empty street, lost in thought. He’s never acted this way. The sound of traffic and distant chatter seemed to mock her as she stood there, frozen. A hand on her back startled her. She turned to see her long‑lost best friend, Betty, eyes bright with surprise. Sandra wiped away her tears and forced a smile. Hey Betty, what’s up, It’s been ages. Look at you big and beautiful, Sandra said, her smile thin. She could feel the awkwardness of her fake smile, but she didn’t want Betty to worry. You too, now even taller, Betty replied, pulling her into a hug that smelled of fresh laundry and cheap perfume. The hug felt warm and comforting, a stark contrast to Ryan’s coldness. Where are you heading,Betty asked. Just grabbing something nearby, then stopped by to see a friend Sandra answered, feeling a small sense of relief at seeing her friend. Why don’t we find somewhere to grab a drink, Betty suggested, flashing a sweet smile that showed her white gap teeth. They hailed a taxi and, three minutes later, stepped out in front of a one storey building lit with colorful bulbs. Music thumped, people danced, and others sipped drinks. The air was filled with the smell of alcohol and perfume, and the sound of laughter and chatter. Let’s go inside and have fun, Betty said, eyes sparkling. She could see Sandra was still distracted, so she tried to cheer her up. Sandra stared at the building, thoughts drifting to Ryan. What’s wrong with him, She felt a pang of worry and confusion. Betty waved a hand in front of her face. Hey, girl, you okay Sandra snapped out of it, forcing a small smile. What did you say You don’t look happy. What’s going on, Betty pressed eyes searching for answers. She could see the pain in Sandra’s eyes and wanted to help. Not something we can discuss here. Let’s go upstairs first, Sandra replied, leading the way to the bar. Inside the bar, they settled into a booth. Betty ordered two chilled drinks. The sound of ice clinking against glass and the low hum of conversations filled the air. So, girl, what’s up You look dim, Betty said, studying Sandra as if looking for a lost item. She could sense something was wrong and wanted to help her friend open up. Sandra sighed, a heavy breath escaping. Girl, my head’s full. I don’t even know where to start. I met this guy four months ago we started dating.just Last week we slept together, and after that he’s been acting weird. Tears slipped down her cheeks as she spoke, her voice trembling. She could feel the weight of her emotions and the need to talk about it. Really, That’s sad. Have you tried reaching out to him? Betty asked, her voice soft and concerned. Yeah, but he gave me a cold shoulder, Sandra added, letting the tears flow. She felt a sense of release as she talked about it, and Betty’s presence was comforting. Betty’s eyes softened, and she wrapped an arm around her friend, offering comfort. It’s gonna be okay girl. We’ll figure it out. Sandra’s mind drifted back to four months ago, to the day she met Ryan at a mutual friend’s party. He was charming, with a smile that could light up a room. They talked for hours, and she felt a connection she hadn’t felt in years. He was attentive, sweet, and made her laugh. She remembered how he’d held her hand as they walked through the city streets that night, and how he’d whispered in her ear, I’m glad I met you. The memory felt like a distant dream now, and she wondered what had changed. Ryan, a handsome man in his early thirties and owner of Gabchars Plaza the most luxurious mall in the citysat behind his massive desk, a motion chair swiveling beneath him. He looked angry and worried, battling something no one else could see. He could feel the weight of his secrets and the pressure of his business, and it was taking a toll on him. Why the hell did I put myself in such a mess I wouldn’t have done that, he muttered, slamming his fist on the desk, the echo reverberating through the high ceilinged office. He stood, panting, sweat beading on his hairy hands. He could hear his own heartbeat and feel the tension in his muscles. The security guard, alarmed by the noise, rushed in. Sir, how can I help you Ryan’s face twisted with rage. Get out I don’t need your help. Get out, I say, he shouted. The guard fled, frightened and bewildered he’d never seen his boss like this. Ryan could feel the anger and frustration building up inside him, and he didn’t know how to control it. Ryan’s phone rang. He stared at the unknown number, curiosity and dread mixing. He answered. Hey Ryan, a female voice said, how are you feeling now,I know you must be feeling so bad. Well, this is just the beginning. The line went dead. His eyes widened. The voice sounded oddly familiar, but he couldn’t place it. He tried to recall, but nothing came. He felt a sense of unease and wondered who could be behind the call. Then a text message pinged on his screen. He opened it in a rush, his heart skipped, and he collapsed, fainting on the spot.
