Chapter 3: The Blue Mountain Pack

2027 Words
Rylee’s POV: Luke left in such a hurry and he had been gone for well over an hour. He wouldn’t tell me exactly, but I already knew that whatever had happened was not something good. I’d been waiting patiently up in our room, just pacing the floor. Finally I decided that twirling my thumbs wasn’t going to help calm my nerves, or make time go by any faster. I made my way out of the bedroom door, quickly stopping when I saw AnnaLee passing by. She slowed her steps and looked up at me with a horrible sadness in her eyes, she looked broken. I gave a heavy sigh to calmed myself, I had to fix things, she couldn’t stay like that. “AnnaLee please come into the room with me so we can talk. This isn’t at all what you think.” She nodded, but I could tell she knew I wasn’t telling the full truth. Honestly though, anything was better than seeing her mope around looking so pitiful. I didn’t care what I said, as long as she snapped back to her old self, I was going to say it. We made our way over to the bed, lowering ourselves down to sit. She was avoiding eye contact with me like the plague, so I just started speaking. “Look, I know you care for Luke, and I know you’ve always had a crush on him. I couldn’t help that I was the oldest and had to mate to him. Believe me, if it could have been you I would have gladly stepped aside” she immediately cut me off. “Then why’d you sleep with him if you hate him so much?” Almost angry at that point. Goddess, why did she have to be angry? I had seen Anna happy, irritated, sad, but only one other time in our lives had I seen her angry. When our father was killed in the battle, she had the unfortunate chance of seeing it happen. I ran up to her right after it happened, while she stared as the man as he ran away with the rest of the attackers. She had a fire lit in her eyes that night that I’d never seen, and hoped to never see again. Granted, I could tell she wasn’t as pissed as she’d been that night, but nonetheless I didn’t want her feeling that at all. Especially when it was aimed towards me. “Anna, I don’t hate him. While he annoys me and I don’t agree with him sometimes, we are still mated. The realization hit me that being his mate I have an obligation to him in more than one way. Being a mated alpha, all eyes are on him, so he can’t go out sleeping around anymore. He still needs that attention though, wether you want to agree or like it, you know it’s true.” She just sat looking stunned, staring at me for a little while before she finally spoke again. “So....so this hasn’t changed your feelings? You’re just trying to be a good mate and Luna?” She gulped, waiting for my response. Her question let me know that she had finally relaxed a bit. “Yea Anna, while I understand him a little better now, and may not find him as annoying, this hasn’t changed my feelings for him. I promise.” She lowered her head taking a deep breath, and straightened her back before standing and twirling around to face me. Grabbing me by the hand, she started leading me back towards the door. I was about to ask where she was taking me, when she smiled. “We’ve got my 18th birthday to plan for!” I shook my head, smiling back at her as we headed out. I felt bad about our conversation, I didn’t necessarily lie to her did I? I really didn’t know how I feel about Luke at that moment, so it wasn’t a total lie. I couldn’t just leave things so tense between us. I couldn’t leave her anything other than her happy joyful self. Ugh... I tried focusing on the party planning. She had always been the more peppy bubbly sister. She had long blonde hair that flowed past her shoulders, and a tall slender body, as she stood almost 5’7”. We couldn’t be more different between looks and personality, but we did share one thing, our beautiful light blue eyes. We shared it from our dad, and was another reason I had to fix things between us. Looking into her sad eyes absolutely broke my heart, because it made me think of hurting a piece of my father. I looked down at my phone seeing if Luke had messaged me, but nothing. It had been well over 3 hours by that point so I tried linking to him. “Luke?” ......... “Luke, what’s going on?” “Rylee, I was going to wait, but I don’t think I can. I’m on my way back now and I’ll explain.” He broke the connection and I felt a knot in my stomach. I just knew it was the Blue Mountain Pack, f**k. Anna saw my face and her eyes widened. “What’s wrong?” “I’m sorry Anna. I think we are going to have to finish this later. The blue mountain pack has attacked again, all I know right now is that it’s not good.” She let out a small gasp, shaking her head as we went towards the dining hall to wait for Luke. It felt like we were waiting forever when he finally entered, and we both looked up with anticipation. He shot me a look and I could tell he was slightly annoyed Anna was there. I gave him an apologetic smile. She’s my sister and could always tell when something was up. He sat in front of us taking a deep breath. “The blue mountain pack has attacked again. One of our men that was patrolling last night, Matt, was killed.” He motioned at me because he knew I was close with Matt’s family. They were from my pack originally, and he had turned 18 only a couple of months before me. Goddess, this was horrible. “He was found this morning with a note attached to him, and it was made very apparent this would be the first of many.” He lowered his head. “So what does this mean. What do we do?” I ask, trying to remain calm. “It means we are at war, and we are speeding up the Lycan involvement. They will be here in 2 days time instead of a week. We can’t risk this escalating to a point of no return.” We both nodded at him. He looked extremely stressed and I could feel him looking at me. “Rylee, can you please meet me back upstairs?” “Oh.. uhm. Yes, I can a little later. I have to help AnnaLee finish her birthday planning first. I cut the conversation short as I noticed Anna staring at us. Luke nodded his head sighing as he stood up from the table. “Please be careful, both of you. Do not leave the pack house without someone with you, two people with you if you can help it. I mean it, please, this is serious.” We both nod and he walked out of the room. I looked at Anna who was very obviously shaken up. I took her hand. “come on little sister” I said winking at her. She hated when I called her that since I’m barely older. “let’s go finish the prep for your ceremony” she looked a little annoyed at me, but smiled and lead me back to the planning room. We worked on everything for a good 3 hours and finally got it all finished. We agreed since the Lycans were coming in earlier than expected that we would make a combined celebration. Her birthday, plus the arrival of the Lycan King and his forces. It was all Anna’s idea which shocked me since she usually liked the spotlight on her. I’m sure she was hoping to meet a Lycan mate when they arrived, and Goddess knows she would love for everyone to witness it. I smiled thinking about it, and knowing very well it was in the realm of possibilities. We wrapped everything up since it was getting late, so I give her a hug and said goodnight. I was getting ready to head back up to my room when I stopped. Luke was up there, and I knew he was tense and stressed from the awful events that had taken place. I knew he would want a repeat of last night, but I still didn’t know what was going on with my feelings toward him. I walked up the stairs and opened the door quietly, hoping he was already asleep. He wasn’t asleep though, he wasn’t there at all. That was odd. I linked him - “Luke? Are you alright?” “I’m fine, just couldn’t sleep. Came down to get a drink” “Okay, I didn’t see you so -“ My thought got cut short as I felt something jab me in the side, and everything started to go black. —————— Luke’s POV: What the hell just happened? I tried to link Rylee again as I’d already dropped my drink and bolted to the room “Rylee?? Are you okay?” “Rylee answer me! ” ..... “I- window....... it’s cold” And that was it, The link just cut off. “Damnit!” I yelled busting through our bedroom door. I saw a man had started to climb out the window, and he had Rylee! I ran and grabbed the back of his shirt, yanking him back into the room, throwing him on the ground. I quickly shifted letting out a low growl as I noticed he was shifting as well. We circled each other for a second before I lunged biting his leg. I felt a crunch and knew I’d broken a bone. I instantly could tell I was far superior, it wouldn’t need much at all to take him out. He let out a loud whimper, but by that point my Beta Sam had come in already shifted. He jumped on the intruders back sinking his teeth deep into his neck. We watched as the wolf laid on the floor losing a massive amount of blood. He slowly began shifting back to his human form. “Get him to medical!” Sam screamed down the hall. “Keep him chained, but don’t let him die! We are going to get some answers out of this asshole.” The nurses came rushing in and got him on the stretcher. They cuffed his arms to the sides, and quickly wheeled him away. Sam and I were now both back in human form just standing, taking everything in. I reached in my dresser, pulling out a set of clothes for us, and spun around putting Rylee in my arms. “Rye, please wake up.” I kissed her gently and her eyes slowly started to open. She looked at me and smiled. I let out a sigh of relief I didn’t even realize I’d been holding in. She nuzzled her head in my lap and just laid there. I looked at Sam who smiled at me. “thank you” I mouthed at him so she wouldn’t wake up. Still smiling, he nodded and turned to leave. Although the pack didn’t know, he knew everything that had happened between myself and Rylee. So I could tell he was happy we were growing closer. “God Rylee, I thought I was going to lose you. I- I don’t know what I would’ve done.” That was all I got to say before the nurses came back. They gently placed her on the stretcher, wheeling her away to the pack hospital.
