Luke’s POV:
As I saw Rylee starting to stir, I squeezed my hands and sucked in a deep breath. I’d been hoping, praying, that she would wake up. She’d been laying in the hospital wing since she had been attacked the night before.
Her wound was already healing nicely due to our genetics, Thank Goddess for that atleast. The last time I saw her eyes was right before she fell asleep in my lap, before the nurses wheeled her off. She should have woken up, but I wasn’t sure why she hadn’t.
“Excuse me?” I waved my hand through the air, flagging down one of the pack nurses.
“Yes alpha Luke? Can I help you with anything?” She asked attentively.
“I’m just trying to see what is going on with Rylee? Her wound seems almost completely healed, but why has she not woken up yet?”
The nurse stopped, her brow furrowed and a look of concern quickly crossed her face. She glanced up at me, before immediately turning her eyes back to the floor.
“Uhm. Yes sir, Let me get the doctor for you.” She spoke gently before sprinting away.
I was truly dumbstruck. That was very odd, and I didn’t even know what to think by that point. It definitely didn’t put me at ease though, that was a face.
Mere moments later the doctor came in and motioned for me to go over to the door.
“Yes sir, you were correct, Rylee’s wound is almost healed.” I felt a smile invade my face at the news, but the doctor continued.
“While this is the case, we also think there may have been a toxin in the knife that she was attacked with.” He stopped briefly before he continued.
“Well, actually, we know there was a toxin, we just aren’t sure what yet. We have sent for a couple of the healers and elders to come take a look at her, and we should know more then.”
I slowly nodded my head, not even sure what to think or say. I walked myself over by Rylee’s bed again, my body feeling limp and numb as I settled back into the deep imprint I had created in the chair.
About the same time I sat down, I heard a loud squeal bounce up and down the hall. I lifted my head from the palm of my hands and turned to see AnnaLee bursting in through the door.
“What happened! Is she okay? What is going on?” She had listed off her questions at an alarming rate, “I heard a man tried to take her? Why isn’t she waking up?”
“AnnaLee.” I said very abrupt.
I tried to remain calm, but also shut her up long enough to talk rationally. She took a deep breath and sat in the chair next to me. She focused on my face, her eyes wide and full of love and concern.
“Anna, I know she’s your sister and you are scared. Yes, a man somehow got into our room last night when I left. Rylee went in and we think he struck a surprise attack from behind the door.”
“D-do you know? Was it someone from Blue Mountain?” She stuttered slightly, her eyes shot back and forth as she tried to gauge the expression on my face.
“We are pretty sure he is, yes. Sam and I subdued him last night, but he had lost a lot of blood. We have him chained up right now, and from what I’ve been told, he should be coming to any minute now so that we can question him.” I gave a slight smile to reassure her.
When I thought about the man who hurt Rylee and endangered my entire pack, knowing he would wake soon sent a hard chill down my spine. I wanted to kill the bastard, but I knew I couldn’t, not yet atleast. I took a deep breath and saw AnnaLee staring at Rylee.
“So, why isn’t she awake then?” She plead.
“The doctor thinks some type of poison was involved. She’s holding on, but we will have healers and elders here soon to help. She is strong Anna, she will get through this.”
I reached out to pat her hand, to give her any type of hope and affirmation. I needed to lead Anna out of the room so I could find Sam. I had to go so we could question our prisoner, but as soon as my hand touched hers I felt a light pulse. It was almost like a tiny surge of electricity had passed through our hands.
AnnaLee jolted up and excused herself, I knew she had felt it too. I didn’t know what on earth that was, but I also didn’t have time to focus on it that moment. The help had arrived and made their way to Rylee’s bed, as I hurried to go find Sam.
By the time we made our way down to him, the man was fully awake and fighting the restraints. He immediately stopped when he saw us, and he looked up smiling.
“It was supposed to be you” he smirked.
“Supposed to be you, but I waited and your lovely Luna came in.”
“Don’t you even mention her you!” I went to lunge but Sam held me back.
“He’s trying to get under your skin, don’t give in to him” He whispered in my ear. I nodded and took a few breaths.
“Who are you? And what did you attack her with?” My questions were short and to the point.
“Me? Oh I’m just the messenger.” He seethed.
“I knew I wouldn’t be able to take you out on my own. That’s when I saw her come in, and decided she was the next best thing. The blue mountain pack has plans for all of you, and you have no idea. Your two packs combining like this, it was never supposed to be.”
He starts panting and his eyes begin to go black.
“The poison in your Luna will have done some damage by now, and the blue mountain pack will thank me for taking one of the leaders down! This is just the beginning, you don’t even know what you have unleashed!”
He howled loudly filling the room. Before we could even move he ripped his arm out of the restraint, grabbing a knife on the table next to him. Sam ran to get it, but the man brought it to his own neck, quickly slicing all the way across.
He laughed and gurgled blood as it spilled down his chest, it happened so fast. In seconds he stopped breathing and was limp. Sam looked at me stunned, and honestly, I didn’t have any words either.
Whatever they had planned, this was not a good foreshadow of what’s to come.
I rushed down the hall to Rylee’s room and I saw one of the healers with a vile of liquid sitting on the table by her bed.
“Alpha Luke.” He bowed.
“There was a poison inside of her, but thankfully she is strong.” But he looked conflicted.
“I won’t sugarcoat it, this should have killed her. She was not meant to live through this, but Thank Goddess she did. We were able to extract all of it, and now we wait. Judging by the strength of the poison, it could take a day or two for her to wake up. So just be patient.”
I sighed with relief, and he left the room. Not 2 minutes later I saw Rylee open her eyes.
“Luke?” She whispered.
“What happened?”
I knelt by her side kissing her hand. She gave a faint smile, laying her head back down. We sat in the room waiting for the doctor to come back.
“She will need some rest, but miraculously she is healing very quickly. Honestly, I would say she should be alright to leave in a few hours.” The doctor nodded to me as they all turn to leave the room again. I texted Anna to let her know, and I flashed back to earlier.
There was so much going on that I didn’t know what to think about what happened between us. I couldn’t let the thoughts interfere for long. I needed to focus on what to do since this attack had happened. I shook the thoughts of Anna out of my head, and sat back in the chair next to Rylee’s bed.
“Oh Rylee!” I heard AnnaLee’s voice bounce across the room.
“Rylee I’m so glad you’re okay!” They looked at each other smiling as Anna hugged her.
Rylee’s POV:
My side was still throbbing lightly, but not nearly as bad as when I had first woke up. It had been a couple of hours and the doctor said I could leave. Luke and Anna helped me up and taking me to my room.
I looked at Luke, he looks like s**t, he obviously hadn’t slept at all. I warmed slightly at the thought of him caring so much. We reached the door when Luke and Anna both went for the doorknob. They quickly jumped back apologizing. .
“I’m sorry Alpha Luke.” Anna said quietly, nodding to the door, motioning him to open it.
“I love you Rylee, please call me when you’re feeling up to it” she gave me a gentle hug and just like that, she was gone. I looked at Luke.
What the hell was all of that about? I was beyond confused, but paid no mind. All I wanted that moment was to get into bed and lay down.
Stepping into the room everything rushed back to me, flooding my memories. The man, the sharp pain in my side. I felt the cold air coming through the window as he held me trying to climb out. I shuddered thinking about everything.
“Are you alright?” Luke asked looking concerned.
Am I alright? I feel my side start to ache as I clutch onto it.
“I don’t think I can be in here. Not yet anyways.” Waving my hand towards the room. Luke nodded as if he agreed.
“We will sleep in one of the other rooms for the time being, okay?” He carefully put his arms back around me and made our way to another room.
I was finally settled, and felt much better in clean pajamas laying on a comfortable bed. Unlike that sad rubber excuse for a mattress that our pack hospital had.
“I’ve got guards watching the room tonight.” Luke said, never taking his eyes from mine, as he was running his fingers through my hair.
I nodded my head at him, feeling slightly relieved.. I never would have thought he could care about me like this. I think I am starting to feel something for him too, but I can’t focus on it much, not right now. I feel my eyes get heavy as all the thoughts drift out of my head, and I fall asleep.
