1. CHAPTER ONE

2123 Words
A nuisance with the name of Jake White was sitting behind me. Of course I would be unfortunate enough to have such a troublesome wolf stationed at my back to repeatedly poke me with the sharp point of his pencil. I groaned lowly in frustration as the pencil started to bite sharply into my skin, no doubt leaving a dark mark. “What?” I hissed while turning to look at him. “Did you bring me a meal?” He asked, raising a perfectly arched brow. What a beautiful bastard! “Yes,” I answered with considerably less annoyance than before. Of course I brought him a meal. I was, after all, his delegated maid. In fact, I was the delegated maid of every one of the wolves in my home pack. The chef, the laundry woman, the cleaner, the omega. I was the servant. Throughout English class, Jake continued to bother me, making me discard my notes to write his and then continuing to poke and prod at me just to tell me to use a neat handwriting. As if I needed to be told that the great gamma, Jake White, deserved the best only. I had the best writing in school and I’m not bragging. It hadn’t always been like that though. I used to write like a four year old, all squiggly and illegible but I had gotten beat up for so long, so many times, by different people who I had to take notes for or complete their assignments, that I started to stay up at night to practice a better handwriting. If you’re wondering why I didn’t practice during the day, then I’ll tell you. It’s because I am a servant. A servant in my pack and a servant’s time is never theirs. The only time I had as mine happened to be school time and that ends at three thirty everyday. After which I had kitchen duties, dungeon duties, laundry duties and then more kitchen duties. As soon as the bell rang, students began to gather their things to leave the class. A random student bumped into me, muttered a bland “oops” with a smirk before she sauntered off, rolling her waist extra hard because Jake was in the vicinity. She didn’t even have to try that hard because his eyes were already tracking her ass like a b***h in heat and with a small wolf whistle, he shouldered his bag and followed after her. Catching up with her, he wrapped strong arms around her shoulders. She giggled loudly when his hand reached down to squeeze her butt and I shook my head. Disgusting. I had to see the English teacher for all the classes I had missed since it was my first day in her class that semester. I had already missed close to three weeks of classes because I followed my best friend and Alpha to Canada for personal and pack business. If it wasn’t for the influence of Dylan and Remi, the wolves I had followed to Canada, I probably would be looking at an extra year like Jake White. The loser was already nineteen but still in high school because he would rather tap asses than pay attention in class. “Good morning, Miss Houston,” I greeted our English teacher but she pretended to busy herself with random papers, completely ignoring me. Miss Houston was human so she had no reason to dislike me but she did. If I had a lightening shaped scar on my forehead, then I’m fairly certain it would burn whenever she turned to look at me. The looks she gave me were filled with as much venom as the looks Snape usually gave Harry Potter. It wasn’t my fault I was failing something as basic as English Language but she would never understand. She was human and she didn’t have to clean after hundreds of wolves. “I have all the assignments for the past three weeks with me here,” I said, rummaging through my scattered bag to fetch the file that contained all my assignments. “I also completed the assigned readings,” I added, handing her the file. She stared at them for a second before adjusting her thin rectangular glasses to address me with a sadistic smirk. “You have to know, Clara, that all these assignments have passed their due date,” She started with a constrained smile. “I am sorry, I can’t collect them. You will have to put in double effort with the future assignments to make up for the zeros you have already received. If you’re lucky, you might manage to scrap a D as your final grade,” She said without sounding sorry at all. My heart fell into my stomach in regret. Goddess, I had put in so many hours to make sure all my assignments were top notch since I had done them in Canada when I still had time and she wasn’t even going to take a look at them! “Ma’am, I’m sorry they’re late but I had family business to attend to,” That was the lie Remi and I were told to tell the humans. “If you would just take a look – " I started to plead desperately. “Clara, you know that’s not possible. I’ve already entered your grades as zero for these assignments. There is nothing I can do now,” She said, managing to sound sorrowful even though there was nothing but plain amusement dancing in her eyes. “Miss Houston, please,” I stressed the last word and it seemed she wasn’t so heartless after all because she stretched out her hand for the files. “Oh, Miss Houston, thank –“ I was going to thank her for accepting the late assignments but I should have known better. I am Clara Hansen and begging never changed my fate. Miss Houston took the papers from me and in a show of deep annoyance, she flung them away. I watched with blurry eyes as assignments that I had spent hours working on flew into the air and slowly cascaded down to the floor.. “Please don’t bother me. Your assignments are late and I will NOT accept them,” Miss Houston pronounced. I fell wretchedly to the ground to gather up my work in utter humiliation. Tears stung my eyes and a few of them dotted the ink on my rejected English assignments. As if the humiliation from Miss Houston was not enough, I walked into Biology class late and with red eyes. My best and only friend, Remi shared that class with me. She saved me a seat beside her which I walked to with dropped shoulders and a bent head. The Biology teacher had given me a verbal lashing for showing up late and I knew if Remi, the Alpha, hadn’t been in that class, he would have sent me out but a simple growl from her and Mr Kent, the teacher, allowed me to sit. “What happened?” Remi whispered to me and I shook my head. We weren’t the only wolves in class. In fact, more than half the class was made up of wolves and I did not want to share my pathetic experience there, when they could all hear our conversation. I didn’t want to ever recount that humiliating experience at all, period. “I don’t want to talk about it,” I answered Remi and she immediately dropped the subject. For that period anyway. ** I should have known. I really should have. I should have seen it coming that I would not have a good day that day. It must have been written in the stars the previous night because s**t like that had to be prophesied, foreshadowed. I was moving out of the final class before lunch when it happened. I shouldered my bag pack and held the lunch box containing Jake’s meal as I walked towards the cafeteria. The last class before lunch just ended so there were students standing around and others moving into the school’s cafeteria for lunch. It was at that moment a basketball came flying into my face, knocking me to my back. A wolf on the basketball team howled with laughter and that was what broke the stunned silence of the onlookers. Girls shrieked with laughter and boys barked out in amusement. I was pointed at like a leper as people ridiculed me. “What a loser,” A girl with perfectly curled blonde hair said. “Aw, did you want to kiss the floor?” Our head cheerleader mocked and more guffaws rang out. I ignored them, trying to gather my books that had flown out of my hands and scattered around me. I crawled around like a proper omega to gather my books, knees scrapping against the cold surface of the dirty school floors. “b***h, I’m talking to you and when I talk, you answer!” Ashley’s voice rang out around the halls as I continued to scramble on my knees to pack my things. “I – I don’t want to kiss the floor, “ I muttered pathetically. It was low, but Ashley was a wolf and she must have heard me but cruel people have to be cruel. “Speak up, you ugly b***h!” She shouted and I could not raise my head. I could not. Not with the hundreds of eyes fixed on me, on the ground, utterly ashamed. “Isn’t that Remi's friend? Ashley has a lot of nerve to mess with her,” A girl behind me muttered. I heard it so there was no hoping Ashley hadn’t heard it also. Yes, she had a lot of nerve to mess with me when my best friend was the Alpha, but Remi already left school grounds to hang out with her mate for lunch. By the time she would get back, the gist of me kissing the ground would have become old news. To demonstrate just how much nerve she had, Ashley kicked me and planted her foot on my back. “Yes, b***h. Kiss the ground like the loser you are,” She said and I could hear the triumph in her voice. Her heels dug into my back and they hurt. They hurt really badly. I had to kiss the ground. I just had to. A pool of tears already formed on the ground beneath me and Ashley’s heel was going to break my spine soon if I didn’t obey her. I kissed the ground in a degrading fashion and everyone laughed again, enjoying the show of my disgrace. “Lick it,” She commanded and what choice did I have. Tears were flowing freely from my eyes but as I opened my mouth to swipe a tongue on the ground that hundreds of feet had walked on that day, a stray voice shouted: “Principal, “ and everyone scattered, running ahead into the cafeteria. Mr Okafor, the principal, was a wolf. He had heard all the ruckus from his office and I guess he finally figured Ashley was taking it too far. After all, we had an “anti-bullying” policy which was complete bullshit as you have seen judging from the demeaning way I had been treated on school ground. “Anyone bothering you?” He asked in a stern voice and I shook my tear stained face. “No sir,” I whispered quietly. I knew the drill. If I said anything asides from no then he would take me to his office and call the parents of those I “accused” of bullying. Their parents would come and call me a liar and call my parents to discipline me, then I would get detention for “defaming other students. " “Good,” He said. “Stop messing up school grounds then,” He said, nodding at something behind me before walking off. I turned and goddess, my heart sank further, completely plummeted into the ground. “Goddess, why!?” I cried in a wretched voice because I thought things had been bad, but they were about to get worse because behind me was something I had completely missed. When Braden had thrown a basketball at my face, promptly knocking me to the ground, I had been holding some books and a lunch box meant for a certain gamma. Jake White! The content of the lunch box sat spread out on the ground behind me, there was tomato sauce splattered on the ground, rice already stepped on, and every other content of the lunch box was just sitting on the dirty floors. The only thing that managed to remain inside the lunch box were a few grain of rice. I could only pray one of his girlfriends brought him lunch but who was I kidding?
