Chapter One
Another day of classes to get through. Graduating this year took a lot of work. But I will be graduating in less than a week, tonight at midnight I will be 18. And once I do, I am transferring packs. There is nothing left for me here. It’s time to begin my life in a new pack where no one knows the name Forbes. The last name of the traitor who tried to kill the Alpha.
Slipping on my blue jeans with rips in the knees and a forest green T-shirt to add to my comfort but also chic style. Stepping into my brown leather booties to head out the door. The sun feels good on my skin and halts my movement so I can smell the fresh air of autumn swimming through the sky. Nothing beats a sun shining morning. Even if it’s where you don’t want to be.
And just as I make it to the school corridor I am hit with a sight that is forever bored into my brain.
What would have been my mate tongue swapping spit with the secret mean girl of the century. But it’s not my business anymore. I found out last week that Sorren would be my mate. But as fate would have it, Serafina has him wrapped around her finger. And honestly rightfully so. Beautiful brunette hair and exotic blue eyes pop against her tan skin. They have been dating a while, and mate or not it would’ve been wrong and hurtful to end a chosen love over a forced bond. So I made it easy for Sorren. I told him I would accept his rejection so he could be with her, without batting an eye.
But I wanted to wait until after I had my wolf because the pain of losing a mate is more painful without your wolf to help you through it. And I know it sounds selfish but I don’t want to be alone when the rejection occurs.
I guess my feet carried me away from the crash and burn scene of what could have been my mate's life and into homeroom class, where I must have been on autopilot watching the other students file into the room, gossiping and conversing about what they will be doing after graduation. Taking a break from school to travel. Going directly to college, or just starting working within the pack. Everyone has their plan, and mine is to get as far away from this place as possible.
I already have a pack chosen which is about 600 miles from here. Not the furthest pack, but the one that seemed the best fit.
“Ms. Forbes?” I hear Mr. Roland call from the front of the classroom, gaining my attention and of course the snickers from the other students who are looking at me with pure disdain.
“Yes, Mr. Roland?” I asked, looking at him as if nothing could face me. A look of pure frustration crosses his eyes. “I asked you if you had any big plans for after graduating. Looks like you are going to be Valedictorian. Where will your brains take you?” He said with the most nonchalant face and an accent that reminds me of Professor Snape.
“Oh, nothing too big. Might travel. Might find a frog and find my REAL prince charming.” I smirked at the heated view of my soon-to-be ex-mate and his very unfazed and none-the-wiser girlfriend.
“Ahhh, quite a comedian. Well, wherever your brains take you, may you get what you rightfully deserve.” And even though I wanted to cower at that remark, I didn't. I lift my head as high as I can and with my most sinister smirk, I reply. “As may you, Mr. Roland.” And just then the bell chimes and I am the first out of the room. With all the whispers behind me, I decided that f**k the next week of classes. I already passed my finals and I deserve a break. So I think a week in the city before I finally get to leave the town is well worth it.
But just as I almost make it to the parking lot I am cornered by the Queen of niceness and all of her minions. Of course, my mate is nowhere to be found. How convenient. Didn’t want to watch his soon-to-be ex-mate probably get hazed.
As I am trying to navigate through the big posse of people, I hear someone clear their throat.
“You do know it is rude to push through a crowd without even muttering, excuse me, right? Or is it your traitor blood that causes you to be a piece of s**t?” She laughed at my expense. I turned around to face her with a smile on my face.
“I just don’t like to associate with pricks and bitches who have nothing better to do with their miserable little lives than to mess with other people. But maybe that’s just my traitor blood too.” I scoffed at all of their shocked faces. I have taken all of the comments, mistreatment, and bad names for far too long. Keeping my mouth shut until now has been a favor to them. But just when I think I would be let go and able to go home, I feel someone wrap their fingers in my hair and snatch me to the ground. Making my head smack the sidewalk so hard I hear my skull crack. I can’t get up because the disorientation from the slam has caused me to be too dizzy. I feel knuckles and feet collide with my stomach and chest. Making me wish I would’ve just died in the attack my parents died in. Cause at least I would’ve been at peace.
“Traitor piece of s**t! You deserve every bit of this just for being born.” I heard Serafina whisper. And somewhere in the mists of hearing bones fracture and break across my body. I hear a roar coming from within the school. Which is weird because everyone should be in class.
“Get the f**k out of here! I will deal with you all later.” The growl in his voice makes the sand on the sidewalk vibrate. And before I could even try to look to see who it is, I black out. All I remember is hearing a whisper. “Why did they do this to you?”
