“What the hell was that?” I shouted, finally straightening myself up and turning to my men.
But they didn’t answer. Oh, no. They were staring. Like statues they seemed frozen, eyes wide, jaws hanging open. Their faces had drained of all color and terror or I don’t know, something shone in their eyes.
“Guys, this isn’t funny, stop staring at me like that.” I groaned. “ARHG!” I shouted, shrugging and rolling my shoulders as the rest of my body crawled. “When will this stop? What’s happening? Why does my back hurt?”
“You are changing.” A deep, soothing voice said from behind me. Behind me? Someone was behind me? One. Two. Three. Yeah, pretty sure all my mates were in front of me. Frozen, but in front of me all the same.
I slowly turned, and gasped at the sight of the man who stood behind me. He, he was, well he was beautiful. He was magnificent. He had platinum hair that hung past his shoulders, pale blue eyes that reminded me of the sky. He stood a good seven foot tall with broad shoulders and a muscular chest and torso. But what stood out the most and had my mind reeling. He had large white wings tucked behind his back.
“Uh….uh, who are you?” I asked, still rolling my shoulders and continuing my pacing.
“I am Uriel.” He replied. “I felt your change starting.”
“You felt it? What does that even mean? Why? What would an, well an angel apparently. What would you want to do with a werewolf vampire hybrid?” I ranted.
“You are not just a werewolf vampire hybrid.” Uriel said matter of factly. “You are a tribrid. An extremely rare occurrence in the supernatural community. So rare in fact, a tribrid is only born every few thousand years.”
I scoffed. “You’re kidding, right?” I asked.
“No, I assure you I am not kidding. You are a werewolf, vampire and angel tribrid. A mixture that has never been before. The pain in your back are your wings trying to break free. The rest is your wolf and vampire. The three men before you are indeed your mates, but as am I. The curse of the hybrid does not apply to you, but unfortunately you have a much worse curse as a tribrid.”
I groaned. Not only at the fact of having yet another mate, but a different and apparently worse curse than before. “And what curse is that?” I asked more harshly than I intended.
“The fates knew a tribrid of your kind would come. So with your power, you are cursed to save not only the earth, but heaven and hell as well. A war has been brewing between heaven and hell, gods and demons since the beginning of time. And now, the war has grown. Angels are gathering armies to enter hell, while demons are gathering to enter heaven and earth…”
“Is caught in the middle.” I interrupted with a silent breath.
“Exactly.” Uriel confirmed.
“So...What’s up with them?” I asked, pointing over my shoulder to the others.
Uriel laughed. “Shock I am assuming.” He chuckled. "Angels do not usually show themselves to others unless necessary. Considering the situation, I thought it was necessary."
“Great.” I sighed, turning to them. “HEY!” I shouted at them. “Snap out of i…”
A scream tore from my throat before I could finish my sentence. Searing hot pain shot through my back and thundered through my entire body. I fell to my hands and knees panting, unable to catch my breath as another shot of pain shot through me. I screamed, tears streamed down my face, and I dug my fingers into the grass to ground myself.
A heavy hand landed on my shoulder, but I couldn’t look to see who it was, couldn’t even open my eyes. Waves of warming energy surged through me easing some of the pain, enough for me to be able to take a breath and open my eyes. I looked over my shoulder and saw Uriel with his hand on my shoulder, concern in his eyes as he looked down on me. The others, finally snapped out of whatever stupor they had been in, surrounded me worriedly.
Then I felt it. My eyes widened as a pain like no other seared through my back. A silent scream fell from my mouth as my back split open. Warm liquid streamed down my back, as a weight tried to push me to the ground. But the pain in my back dulled to a throb for now, and I could breathe again. I sat back onto my knees and braced myself, pulling in deep lungfuls of air as I tried to calm my racing heart.
“Nicole.” Lance breathed, circling me. “You’re beautiful.”
I scrunched my brow and looked behind me, only to see a beautiful pair of pale golden wings. They shimmered in the afternoon sun, reflecting the light like they were metallic. Running my fingers over the feathers, I gasped at how soft they felt. They felt like silk, smooth like satin. I was stunned by them. “Wow.” I breathed. Using my back muscles I flapped them, testing how they worked. I was amazed to see they worked like any limb would. It felt natural.
“Golden wings.” Uriel whispered, running his fingers lightly along the feathers making me shudder. Okay, so no one touches the wings. I tucked them close to my back, shivering at the feelings running through me from that one touch.
“Ahh!” I groaned, covering my mouth with my hand as a sharp pain laced through my mouth. I squeezed my eyes shut as I tasted blood in my mouth, and felt as it coated my hand and chin. When the pain stopped I sighed in relief, my hand dropping to my lap.
“Nicole?” Elias’s voice came from in front of me, his warm hand cupping my face. “Can you open your mouth for me?” I did as he asked and opened my mouth a little, running my tongue over my new fangs in the process. They were sharp, but I didn’t expect anything less for a vampire.
“Nicole, open your eyes.” Elias said calmly.
I growled at him trying to tell me what to do, but did as he said only because he was my mate. I snapped my eyes open, boring them into his haloed eyes. I watched as his eyes flared, the halo in his eye glowing as he looked back at me.
“Master Vampire.” Elias breathed.
“Great.” I shouted, stunning everybody. “What’s next? Being a tribrid freak isn’t enough, I have to be a master vampire on top of it?”
“And an archangel.” Uriel put in.
“A WHAT?” I bellowed, the power in my voice echoing around us. “No, there’s no way.” I argued.
“Only archangels have golden wings.” Uriel told me gently.
I growled, a menacing and dangerous sound as it rumbled from my chest and through my lips. Everyone backed away from me at the sound and I knew why, I felt right before it happened. I screamed as my arm snapped, then my elbow, my shoulder, my fingers, my spine. I thought the wings were bad, but it was nothing, nothing compared to this. It burned and it felt like I was being stabbed repeatedly. Over and over without mercy. It felt like I’d been thrown into a fire pit with someone dumping shards of glass over me, and it pierced my skin.
When it was over all I could do was collapse to the ground, unable to even move my head or open my eyes. It took everything in me to keep myself breathing. All I could focus on was breathing, getting air in and out of my lungs because I was scared that if I stopped thinking about it, I would forget to breathe. That I would just sink into the oblivion that was calling my name.
I heard the guys calling my name but I couldn’t respond with words. Pained whines and whimpers escaped me, as my wolf form tried to lift her head.
Rest. a voice said in my mind You’ve been through a big change, a lot of big changes and our body needs rest.
All I could do was moan in response as I allowed my mind to drift into the darkness that was waiting for me.
