Chapter 31

ELROY’S POV Noah’s words resounded in my ears as I rushed through the road, headed for the hospital. “Attacked?” That wasn’t something you could attach with my sister’s name. “What’s going on?!” I asked hastily with sweat dripping from my forehead because I had ran up the stairs when the elevator took too long to open “Where is she?” I asked Noah frantically. “She’s resting. Your mom’s in there with her” he assured me, placing his hands on my shoulder and steadying my eyes. “Elroy, look at me, look at me” he persisted when I fidgeted, trying to get past him. “I’m here” I answered, clenching my jaw “I want to find whoever did this to her” I stated. “She’s fine..I was waiting for you so we could get the police involved” he replied “Just try to relax, she’s fine” he turned to the door of her room, letting go of me and I saw her through the opening. “Chloe” I mumbled under my breath and focused back to him “Where’s my dad?” Noah somewhat avoided my eyes and I could tell the answer from his silence “He didn’t even come here..did he?” I almost exploded. “He said he’s in Dublin and can’t make his way back at the moment” Noah responded but I expected that from him. “It’s his daughter and he isn’t here” I paused, placing my fingers on my temple “What kind of a father doesn’t show up for his daughter?” I asked but it was directed more to myself than anyone else. “Elroy..where is she?” I heard from behind There she was, her grey hoodie and messy bun slightly intact as she rushed towards me. “Hey Noah..where’s Chloe?” Evelyn asked frantically, heaving a heavy breath, her hands on her knees. “Mi..miss Reeds, what are you doing here? I mean..she’s in that room” he stuttered, pointing to the room she laid unconscious in. She peeked through the opening and her face saddened even more. “I’m her tutor…I was called by the hospital. I guess she saved my number as an emergency contact” she answered, her hand on her chest as she tried to catch her breath. “How is she?” She asked again. “The doctor said she’ll be alright” Noah answered, he looked and sounded more composed than I was, it was to be expected, although he might be just my friend, he’s like Chloe’s big brother as well. “Did you run here miss Reeds?” He asked and she nodded slightly before sitting on the bench and letting out a sigh of relief. “Oh thank God” she breathed, untying her messy bun and putting her up in a rather messier one because her hands were probably too tired. “El..are you okay?” She asked after noticing that I had been staring at her since she walked in. “Ye..yeah, I’m fine” I lied, I wasn’t. I had done something unforgivable tonight and she ran here to see my sister even after that and here I was trying so hard to get the image on her moist lips out of my mind and my sister’s in the hospital, unconscious. “Then sit down..I’m sure you’ve been standing since you came, sit and wait for your mother before going in” she advised, her tone felt soft and endearing, different from when she stood in heels in front of our class. Noah glanced at me and then back at her “She sounds different” he mouthed so well that I could understand. I tried so hard not to let out a subtle chuckle, Of course she sounded different, she also looked different when her lips were on mine but that’s a different thing from what’s going on right now. It didn’t take long and mother was out of the room, pulling Evelyn for a hug, she sobbed softly before I headed back into Chloe’s room. She laid so peacefully, she had complained to me about not sleeping lately and I felt obliged to care for her, yet, this happened, a man attacked my sister, the only daughter of the Vans household. I clenched my fist, my mind had sworn to find whoever this perpetrator was and I’d make sure he paid with his life. “What are you doing here?” I heard from outside her room. “You’re not a family friend..you’re just a tutor who is paid, not her caretaker or something” the voice grew louder, I turned to look at the person making such a ruckus. “Chloe’s resting Tiff..could you talk lower?” Noah asked sternly. “What’s going on here?” I asked angrily. “What is she doing here?” Tiffany asked but Evelyn didn’t answer, she only turned to my mother and whispered something in her ear, but my mother held onto her wrist but she turned to leave. “Are you running away?!” Tiffany asked her in annoying high pitched voice. “You’re chasing her away…she’s leaving and you’re saying she’s running?” I asked, my fist clenched to stop me from exploding “Why are you here Tiffany?” I asked sharply. “I came to see Chloe..I heard that something terrible happened” she said softly, placing her fingers on my arm like some sort of animal marking its territory. “She’s resting, you’re not needed here” I answered sharply. “But you’ll let her come here” she pointed to Evelyn who had disappeared into the hall. “Maybe because she isn’t some sort of gold digger coming to me after leaving me to die, unlike you, you ungrateful…..” “Enough El!” Mother stopped me, her voice soft and low “All of you leave” “Bu…” “Leave!” She turned to Noah “Thank you so much my son..you can go home now” she smiled at him but glared at Tiffany. “We need to talk El” Tiffany announced after Noah had made his way out the hall and mother went back into the room. “Talk about what?” I asked, shoving her aside “And don’t place your hand on me” “But I know who attacked Chloe”
