Chapter 33

EVELYN’S POV I stood there frozen, Tiffany standing behind him with folded arms and a sly grin. I couldn’t understand what she was pulling off now but I could tell that it wasn’t good. “What are you talking about?” I asked sternly, holding his gaze angry eyes couldn’t scare me any more. “You’re the cause of all this?” He repeated, which made no sense He wasn’t the kind to beat around the bush, especially with anger brewing. “If you keep repeating the same thing, you’ll sound even more crazy” I snapped back. “What he’s saying is that you need to leave. Your presence is enough bad luck, leave us alone!” She yelled, putting her arm around his like she was marking some sort of territory. At this point, my body shriveled and I prayed for this to be unreal Am I awake right now? This feels more like a stupid dream “Okay fine, I’m leaving..just at least tell me what I did wrong” “Your past came knocking. There was a man lurking and when we asked, he said you were the reason this all happened” she said. Now it made a lot of sense, she was talking about Melvin but how on earth did she know about him, about me. “What?” I asked, my eyelids flickering with anxiety “I don’t understand” I added. “We’re not here to make you understand. just leave!” Tiffany yelled again, a smirk on her face right after. I didn’t protest, it would be futile. But when i walked down the hallway, I made my way into the emergency exit stairwell with tears in my eyes and my body still shivering from fear when I felt my phone buzz from my pockets. “I just want to be alone” I sobbed silently, hoping that whoever was calling would just give up after the first, second and even third time but that wasn’t the case. My phone kept buzzing. I took it up as I wiped off my tears with the back of my palm “Another unknown number? What more does he want?” “Hello” I said “What on earth do you want from me you goddamn bastard!” I yelled at the top of my lungs. “Evie, you okay?” He sounded different, that didn’t sound like Melvin, it was softer, calmer and yet so familiar. “Uhm..who’s this?” I asked, sniffling. “It’s me, Ryder. Are you alright? I just saw you sprint off that’s why I called” he said softly And suddenly I regretted picking up the phone. For once I wished it was Melvin so I could insult the living daylight out of him but then again, I had blocked his number to begin with. “Oh..hey Ryder” I struggled to hide the sniffling sound “I didn’t know it was you” “That doesn’t matter, where are you? You okay?” He asked, concern in his tone. I had already yelled at him and now I felt somewhat sorry. “I’m fine..why wouldn’t I be?” I let out a soft chuckle. “You’re not” he answered back, opening the door that led to where I sat "I know you aren’t” he took the phone away from his ear and he made his way to the last step on the stairs which I sat. “What are you doing here?” I asked him, my eyes pooled with tears. “My cousin’s still at the hospital and I visit her almost everyday…oh, I saw you sprint past me and I tried to follow you but I couldn’t” he replied, his face etched with concern. “I’m fine, I should get home” I stood up, wiping my eyes. “I’ll drive you home” he said I turned to him, giving him a look that meant that I was fine and able to get home myself “Don’t look at me like that..I’m taking you home, I can’t let you get in one of those cramped buses we took last time” he let out a soft chuckle. Reluctantly, I nodded. I didn’t have a choice and since he wasn’t trying to pry or push it, I might as well just get home and pray I never wake up again. He opened the door to the passenger seat and I let myself sit back and take in deep breaths, using my heavy breathing as an excuse so I wouldn’t think of Melvin or why I noticed a car from the side view mirror tailing us as we drove. “Let’s head down to a motel” I blurted out it was bad enough he was following the Vans and almost killed Chloe, I couldn’t let Ryder be dragged in as well. “Huh?” He asked in a suprised tone “Why don’t I just take you home, it’s close by” he insisted. “The dorms are locked” I said quickly, looking at the side mirror to find a dark blue cadillac following right behind us. “Just take me there if you really want to help me” “I can’t let that happen..and why do you keep looking back like there’s someone after us or something. Wait, Is there someone after us?” Oh no, I just made him panic “No, no, there isn’t” I let out an awkward chuckle. “Yup there is, you do that faint chuckle when you’re lying” he pointed out “I’ll shake them off” How on earth did he remember that? It’s been years already. “Buckle up and hang on tight” I did as he told me when he said to buckle up, I thought it was just to put down my seatbelt and make sure it held me in. Not try to keep myself in the seat of the car in the heat of the moment even with a seatbelt because the car was moving like it was a fast and furious premiere. “Ryder….do you wanna kill us?!” I yelled, clutching the seatbelt and pressing onto nothing until the moment we came to a halt. I turned and looked at him, he was rather unfazed with those peculiar glasses on his face and beautiful hair that didn’t flinch and then I looked back at the rear view mirror to find my raggedy looking reflection staring back at me as well as an empty backside view of the car, he really did shake him off. “You alright?” He finally asked. “Yeah” I let out a sigh of relief as I opened the car door and sprawled on the floor. “I’m sorry I made you scared” he apologized But I was too busy laughing recklessly because that was the best thrill I had ever had in my life. “You kidding…that was fun, crazy, but fun” I chuckled He smiled as well, joining me on the floor as we sat in the dimly lit parking lot. “It was, wasn’t it?” He asked with a smile, I nodded in approval “That’s one of the things I love about you” he said with a faint smile it almost made my heart skip.
