DAD PULLED UP under the portico of the hospital and stopped. “You boys go ahead and wait for me in the lobby,” he said. “I’ll be there as soon as I find a parking spot.”
Kevin and I got out of the car and went through the automatic doors into the lobby, where we found seats and waited for Dad. We waited for quite a few minutes before he came into the lobby, and said, “Sorry to keep you waiting so long, but I had to park in the most remote parking lot they have.”
“It’s okay,” I said.
“Yeah,” Kevin said, “it’s not as though we had any pressing appointments.”
“She’s on the fifth floor,” Dad said. “Follow me.”
We followed him to a bank of elevators and rode up to the fifth floor. “It’s just down the hall,” Dad said as we stepped out of the elevator.
