Chapter 1 - A Tale Of Two Friends.
LILY,'S POV The sun filtered through the tall windows of a lavish penthouse in the heart of the city, casting a warm glow over the pristine white marble floors. The smell of fresh espresso hung in the air as I sat at the kitchen counter, flipping absentmindedly through the latest fashion magazine. My long, manicured nails clicked against the glossy pages as I sipped my coffee, and my perfectly coiffed hair catching the light. From a distance, everything about me seemed picture-perfect.I am beautiful, rich, and the only daughter of one of the city’s wealthiest real estate magnates. My life was a constant swirl of parties, designer clothes, and luxury vacations. But beneath the surface, there was something missing, something i couldn’t quite put her finger on. “Lily! You’ve got to see this!” a voice called from the living room, breaking me from my thoughts. I smiled and got up,walking into the living room where my best friend Emma Dawson was sitting cross-legged on the couch, her eyes glued to a laptop screen. Emma couldn’t have been more different from me. She was from a modest background, living in a small apartment with her mother and two younger siblings. Her clothes were simple, her shoes worn, but her heart was pure. Despite our differences,Emma and i had been best friends since high school. I sat down beside her, peering at the screen. “What is it?” I asked,my curiosity piqued. Emma grinned, her dark brown eyes sparkling with excitement. “It’s this new charity event happening next weekend. They’re raising money for local schools, and there’s going to be an auction! We have to go!” I raised an eyebrow, “An auction? Sounds boring.” “No, no! Not this one. The auction is for a date with some of the city’s most eligible bachelors. It’s going to be so fun! And, who knows, maybe you’ll meet someone special.” I laughed, shaking my head. “Emma, you know I’m not interested in finding a guy right now. Besides, I doubt anyone there will be worth the trouble.” Emma playfully rolled her eyes.“You’re impossible. Not all guys are jerks, Lily. Maybe this event will change your mind.” l gave my friend a skeptical look but decided to play along. “Fine, I’ll go. But only because you’re so excited about it.” Emma grinned, hugging me tightly. “You won’t regret it and who knows? Maybe I’ll meet someone too.” I smiled, though i couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt. Emma deserved the world, but she always seemed to come up short in life. The struggle of balancing work, school, and caring for her family weighed on her, but she never let it dull her optimism.I really admired that about my friend, but sometimes I wished i could do more to help. The days passed quickly, and soon the night of the charity event arrived. The venue was a grand ballroom, glittering with chandeliers and filled with the city’s elite. Emma and I stepped inside, we both looking stunning but in our own unique ways.I wore a designer gown, my long, golden hair cascading in soft waves, while Emma had chosen a simple but elegant black dress, her dark curls pinned up loosely. “Wow,” My friend Emma breathed, looking around at the opulence. “This place is incredible.” I nodded, though my attention was already drifting. These types of events were nothing new to me, and while I enjoyed the glamour, there was always a part of me that felt detached from it all. But for my friend Emma, this was a rare escape from her everyday life, and I could see the excitement in my friend’s eyes. We moved through the crowd, exchanging pleasantries with acquaintances, until the sound of a microphone tapping silenced the room. The auction was about to begin.I and Emma found seats near the front, and soon, a procession of sharply dressed men made their way to the stage, each one introduced by the auctioneer. But it wasn’t until the last man was introduced that the room seemed to collectively hold its breath. “And now, ladies and gentlemen, our final bachelor of the evening,Mr. Ethan Brooks.” My eyes flicked towards the stage, and there he was. Ethan Brooks,a tall handsome man, with dark, tousled hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to gleam under the stage lights. He wore a crisp black suit, his confidence and charm evident in every step he took. There was a quiet power to him, the kind that drew attention without trying. I felt my heart skip a beat, and besides, Emma was similarly captivated. “He’s… wow,” Emma whispered, her voice filled with awe. I didn’t respond, but my mind was racing. There was something about Ethan, something that made it impossible to look away.I have seen plenty of handsome men in my life, but none had ever made me feel quite like this. The auctioneer began the bidding, and hands shot up across the room, the numbers climbing rapidly. I could see the excitement building in the crowd, but it was Emma’s quiet voice beside me that caught me off guard. “Lily, should I… should I bid?” Emma asked, biting her lip nervously. I looked at my friend with surprise. Emma had never been one to chase after guys, but the look in her eyes told me everything I needed to know.Emma was genuinely taken by Ethan and that made me pause. I felt a strange twist in my stomach, an unexpected surge of protectiveness, maybe even jealousy. But why,i wasn’t interested in Ethan, was i? And besides, Emma had so little compared to me. Wasn’t it time Emma had her own fairy tale moment? “Go for it,” I said, forcing a smile. “You should bid.” Emma beamed at me grateful. The bidding continued, and with a deep breath, Emma raised her hand.I watched as the number climbed higher, but eventually, Emma’s bid was lost among the wealthier patrons, her small, hopeful gesture drowned out by the flood of money. Emma sighed, sinking back into her seat. “I knew I didn’t stand a chance.” I reached out, squeezing her hand. “It’s okay, Em. You’ll meet someone who’s perfect for you. You deserve that.” But as I said the words, my eyes drifted back to Ethan, standing tall and composed on the stage, his gaze sweeping over the crowd. For a split second, our eyes met, and i felt a jolt, as though something invisible had shifted between us. I quickly looked away,my heart racing. What was that? The auction came to an end, and Ethan was whisked away by the winner, a glamorous woman in a red gown. But as the night wore on, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something significant had just begun. Emma might have been the one to express interest first, but for the first time in a long time, i found myself longing for something more, something that might come with complications which I wasn’t ready to face.
