Chapter 9 Dace had learned to cope with dangerous men by playing small. Don’t fight, don’t struggle. Go passive, and wait. Wait until there was a chance to get loose. She did so now. But damn it she was getting tired of this strategy. She wanted to fight back, to struggle. And lose, she reminded herself. And lose. She and Mary had gotten off the elevator at Mary’s floor. A man walked toward them confidently; Dace had thought he was probably hotel security. But she heard someone come up behind her, and she turned, just as she heard Mary say puzzled, “Officer?” She turned back toward Mary. The man behind grabbed her, clasping his hand over her mouth. Another man used something in his hand to hit Mary and knock her out. Dace struggled to go to her, but the men dragged her down the corridor
