Ch. One
The Black Widow Pack. My eyes scanned the documents sitting in front of me. A new, very odd pack had been formed on the southern border of our pack lands. I’d been told by my Gamma and Beta that this pack was most certainly a threat. They didn’t just gather wolves, no, they were accepting shifters of any sort. The only catch was that… the pack only accepted females, females who had lost their mates.
Nothing was more terrifying than a woman scorned. Anyone could tell you that. And it was the truth, I’d seen it with my own eyes. As my mind wandered over the oddities of this new pack, my Beta stepped into my office. My eyes snapped up to him and inspected him carefully. Nikolas was my best friend from birth. He was tall and broad, muscular with thick dirty blonde curls and pale green eyes. He was my confidant. There was no one I trusted more than him.
“Alpha,” Nikolas bowed his head slightly to me. “We have… an issue.” He cleared his throat and glanced to the side, seemingly reluctant to tell me what said issue was.
My jaw ticked and I drummed my fingers atop of the Black Widow packet. My dark blue eyes trailed up to meet Nikolas’ nervous green hues.
“What… could be wrong?” I drawled, finally slumping back in my seat.
“Well, uhm, the Alpha… Alpha Raelyn of the Black Widow pack is here, to discuss… things with you. Ahm -” Nik was stumbling a little with his words, causing my brow to arch.
“Alright, and how is that an issue?” I pushed myself up from my seat. My back groaned in protest as my bones creaked from the movement.
“Her… Beta is with her.” Nik reached up and scratched the back of his neck, his eyes now darted around the room to look anywhere but at me.
“And your point…?” I arched a brow, my eyes narrowed on my Beta. He wouldn’t be dancing around an issue unless…
“Well, her Beta is a Kitsune.” Nik finally responded, his eyes meeting my own. “A lot of the… warriors are anxious to rip her throat out.”
My blood boiled. Fox shifters, known as Kitsunes, were the bane of most werewolf pack’s existences. They hailed from a werewolf who was mated to a witch. It was no secret that Kitsunes were shunned by the werewolf community, so any wolf mated to a witch was essentially forced into rogue life. It was a prejudiced and racist way of thinking, but wolves were stubborn.
I cleared my throat and glanced to the side. “Did you have Ricardo see them to the conference room?” I rolled the sleeves of my tight button up shirt up my arms, my muscles strained against the fabric.
“Yes, He was the only one willing to go anywhere near… the Beta.” Nik shifted awkwardly.
I let out a gruff grunt before coming around the desk, I strolled towards the door, my body tensing up from the mere idea of having to have a meeting with this women.
“One more thing, Adam.” Nik called, causing me to pause, I glanced sideways at him. He cleared his throat and slid his hands against his jeans. “The Beta reminds me of your… dream.”
My body tensed up further. My eyes shifted towards the open door of my office, only a step away. I didn’t want to think about that dream. I didn’t want to be reminded of it. Selene had been so hard on me; refusing to give me happiness most wolves enjoyed. I clenched my fists and inhaled sharply in an attempt to calm my erratic beating heart.
‘This is it. She’s here.’ My wolf, Orpheus growled. It wasn’t malicious. In fact, he sounded a little too excited.
I hurried to the door and down the hall. I was less than ten feet from the conference room when the most wonderful smell hit me; Fresh baked sugar cookies and gingerbread. I was certain my pupils dilated as my heart began to further race. s**t. I never thought Selene would give me this. Not after how much I had defied her. I clenched my fists and unclenched them, trying so hard to get myself in check. I couldn’t and wouldn’t let this distract me.
I tried to relax myself before I threw the door to the room open, allowing it to slam into the wall and bounce off. I stepped inside and my eyes drew along the conference table. First was a tall, muscular woman who had to be in her early forties. Her eyes were blue and her thick brown hair was dyed blue along the tips. She was stunning, as most shewolves were, but my eyes darted to the girl sitting next to her.
She was younger, probably closer to my age in the early thirties. Her long reddish-blonde hair was pulled up high in a ponytail to keep it off her shoulders. Her skin was a pale ivory. She had to be tall, considering her height whilst sitting nearly matched the Alpha’s. She had one soft blue eye and one deep blue eye, it was entrancing to say the least. I couldn’t stop myself from staring at her in what could only be awe.
Orpheus howled inside my head, delighted that the moon goddess would give us a mate; and one so beautiful it could physically hurt.
My eyes darted down to the slim fitted deep green dress she was wearing. My mind and heart ached to rip that dress from her body and see her in all her beautiful glory. Because my god, I knew she would be beautiful. My mouth watered at the mere thought of her.
But where I was affected so intensely by her presence, she seemed unperturbed and disconnected. She wouldn’t meet my gaze, in fact she seemed to be looking anywhere but at me.
‘Mate. Oh our mate. She is a true goddess, I’m trying to talk to her.’ Orpheus growled lowly in my mind.
“Alpha Raelyn, a pleasure.” I inhaled sharply and pulled back hard on Orpheus and my own desires. I glanced back over my shoulder as Ricardo came in with a tray of drinks and set them down on the table. He sat down to the side whilst Nikolas joined me as we sat down across from the females. I chose to sit directly across from the Beta - my mate.
“Alpha Adam,” Raelyn nodded her head. She glanced to the side at her Beta, “This is my Beta, Fenne.”
‘f**k what a beautiful name.’ Orpheus groaned.
“A pleasure to meet you… Fenne.” Her name rolled off my tongue like it was sacred. I might’ve growled, albeit I wasn’t sure because my eyes were focused so intently on the female before me.
Her eyes finally met mine. We stared each other down before she bothered to speak at all. “I’m sure your pack thinks differently than that.” She glanced at Nik, before looking back at me.
“This is my Beta, Nikolas, and you’ve met my Gamma, Ricardo.” I motioned between the two men.
Raelyn nodded, a pleasant smile spreading on her lips whilst Fenne kept eye contact with me. I suppose it could be considered a challenge, that she would meet my gaze head on, but I knew otherwise. After all, this woman was my Luna.
“To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?” I asked nonchalantly, trying so hard not to let the mate bond and my desires overpower my diplomatic abilities.
“We’re in search of Fenne’s mate. He was last seen in your borders.” Raelyn spoke up, but the conversation bled away as I took in the information. How could she already have a mate? I was certain I was her mate, with the way the pull in my heart and body screamed.
“Raelyn means to say, my fiance.” Her voice was melodic, and it shot through me and consumed my every waking thought. f**k. This woman would be the death of me. Fenne, oh Fenne.
Then, that information settled inside of me. Fiance. As in, not her mate. Which meant that I could still have her. She could still be mine. And f**k it if I wasn’t going to do everything in my power to make it so.
