“Look around, L. We are not in our bedroom!!!”
The moment she heard that, Elena suddenly sobered up from her devastating headache. She rolled up from the bed and observed, and then found that she was in a completely strange room. There were no lights on right now. She could only see some simple furniture vaguely. But she knew it wasn’t night outside. Because from the narrow window above her bed came dim daylight.
“It’s a basement,” Nyla explained. “And there are silver bars blocking the window, and the door is iron. I bet we can’t open it from the inside.”
Elena responded to her with nothing. She just got up from bed and then went to check the door. As Nyla had guessed, it was locked from the outside. She put her hand on the doorknob and pulled it. It wouldn’t open.
“He locked us here, L,” Nyla cried. There was a rare trace of panic tinged her voice.
Nyla was a competent wolf, always giving her mature advice and acting composedly. And when she started to panic, Elena knew they must have been in real trouble. And that somehow awakened her from her ridiculous delusion that Cory was a good person.
A good person would never get her humiliated in public. A good person would never ask her to be his mistress. A good person would never cheat on her but act like he did nothing wrong. And a good person would never lock her up in the basement.
Cory was never a good person. He just pretended to be one for some twisted, disgusting reasons. Elena had no idea what those reasons were, but she had no interest in finding them out.
“We need to get out of here, Nyla,” she said. “We must leave Cory, leave this Kingdom, or else, he will kill us.”
Her sudden sobriety scared Nyla. She asked her worriedly, “Are you alright, L?”
Elena put her hands on the wall to gain herself some support. Physically she felt she was about to faint, but mentally she was fine than ever.
“Yes, I am,” she said, hands propping the wall, and then slowly lowered herself to the floor.
All her love, trust, belief and lingering attachment to Cory, including the pains caused by him suddenly disappeared the moment she realized that he had locked her up. All of a sudden, she just ceased loving him, and that meant he would never be able to hurt her anymore. There was still an empty hole in her heart, shivering and crying, but it had stopped bleeding. Elene knew as long as she stayed up, the wounds eventually would heal.
“We need to find a way to get rid of him, Nyla,” she said it again, kneeling on the floor, eyes fixed on the iron door. “As long as we are still in the kingdom, he will never stop tor/turing us. We must find a way to leave for good.”
“But it’s not that easy, L,” Nyla sighed. “We can’t go to other shifters’ kingdoms. They are afraid of wolves, will never protect us from Cory. Dragon’s Land is off the option too. Lennie will help him to catch us. The only place out of Cory’s reach is the Rogue’s territory. But we will never survive on Rogue’s land, L. It’s a totally different place.”
“Different how?” Elena asked. She wasn’t seriously thinking about fleeing to the rogue’s land. She just desperately needed a way out.
“They live in the endless desert, L,” Nyla said. “We’ve learned this before in geography class. They have no food, no water. The only way they survive is to steal and rob. Sometimes, they even feed on each other. We won’t even make a day there.” She then added, “Not to mention that Cory will never let us leave. We are his mates. He will never allow us to reject him!”
“But we must find a way out of this. We must,” Elena murmured. She was still too weak to even stand up from the floor. But she just knew she must try everything she had to get away from Cory, or else, something much worse would happen to her. Even for her parents' sake, she needed to get out of this.
“Fine, then,” Nyla said after a few moments. “Let’s find a way to get out of the basement first, but to do it. You must pretend to cooperate.”
**
The next day, when Cory showed up in the basement, Elena was back to “normal”.
She wasn’t hysterical anymore, just lying on the bed quietly, resting under the blanket. When Cory came beside her bed, she even smiled at him.
“Cory,” she called his name so sweetly and gently, just as she always did.
Cory felt relaxed seeing her like that. Elena was a reasonable girl, always understanding and supportive of him. He hated it when she acted irrationally.
“You feel better, baby?” he sat at the edge of her bed, and then reached out his hand to stroke her cheek.
Elena felt this strong feeling of revulsion, but she suppressed her impulse to dodge, just lying there motionlessly with a fake smile on her face, letting him fondle her like a toy.
After a while, Cory felt satisfied with her compliance. He then asked her, “Have you made up your mind, baby? You know, the thing we’ve talked about in prison.”
Elena wanted to spit on his face and told him to f**k off, but all she did was lower her eyelids and pretend to be thinking. She had decided to agree with him on that disgusting proposal in exchange for opportunities to escape. But she couldn’t let him get that answer too easily. It would cause suspicions.
“You know, I am only asking because I truly love you and care about you, baby.”
Seeing Elena stop acting aggressively on the sharing mate topic, Cory couldn’t help but feel thrilled. He knew that silence meant she had started rethinking his proposal. He soon decided to help a little. “Lennie and I are getting married no matter what. It’s the kingdom’s decision. If you don’t give us permission, baby, when we become a real married couple, you will get hurt, a lot. You know what I mean. The mate bond between us is so tight. It’s going to hurt like hell.”
Anger and hate restarted surging on Elena’s chest. She had to stick her nails into her palms to stop herself from slapping Cory on his face and telling him to go to hell. She kept telling herself she couldn’t do it now. In front of Cory, she should always be understanding and gentle and agreeable, in other words, stupid. Only in that way would Cory drop his guards and give her the opportunity to escape.
“Why don’t you just reject me?” she asked with tears in her eyes, pretending to be so sad and vulnerable.
Cory sighed, but his lips curled up into a smile. “Because I love you, baby,” he said. “You are my mate. I need you. My wolf needs you. We can’t live without you. You and your wolf are the same with us, aren’t you? We are inseparable.”
Tears streamed down from the corners of Elena’s eyes, but she didn’t say No. Cory then took it as a “Yes.”
Excitement and pleasure quickly filled his heart. He stretched his lips to an even bigger smile. “Don’t worry, baby,” he said, bending over to get closer to her. “I’ve talked with Lennie. She has agreed to let you stay with us. She understands how important you mean to me. And she allows us to have sex.”
Elena tried really hard not to scream at him and tell him to f**k off. And Cory didn’t stop. He bent a little more, getting closer, eyes fixed on her, as if interrogating her. Elena had to turn her head to get some normal breath from his scorching gaze. And then she heard him whispering to her, “There’s only one thing, baby, only one more thing I need you to agree with.”
Elena swallowed hard and asked him as calmly as she could pretend, “What?” just to get rid of him.
Cory then said, “I need you to take care of Lennie, baby. She is new here and she is a princess. There are lots of things she doesn’t know about our kingdom. I need an excellent person to stay with her and guide her to be the best Queen of ours, as her maid but also tutor. I think you will do a great job, baby. Nobody else knows how to be a great Queen as you are, don't you? You are always the best, baby. I am sure Lennie would be so grateful to have you.”
For a moment, Elena almost thought she had heard it wrong. She didn’t even know how she should react hearing that outrageous request. Of course, she knew everything about being the kingdom’s Queen. Only because that was supposed to be her title. How dare he ask her to instruct his concubine to take over her position, and to be her maid?!
Elena felt so glad that she had already decided to move on from this sick b/astard. Or else, she might have been killed by their sickness.
“Sure, why not?” She stretched her lips into a painful, pale smile. No matter how much she wanted to scratch his face, right now she must pretend to cooperate, or else she would be stuck with this ridiculous, disgusting couple forever. “I can help her with that as long as she allows us to stay with each other.” She wanted to bite her tongue off for saying that.
Cory wasn’t surprised by her “devotion” to him at all. He had known Elena would sacrifice everything just to stay with him for a long time. That’s just how much she loved him.
“You’re the best, baby. The best in the world,” he almost yelled, bending over to her to take her lips into his mouth.
Elena screamed and pushed him away. That was the one thing, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t keep on pretending.
Cory was startled by her. He sat back on the edge of the bed, and frowned.
“Baby?” He asked inquiringly.
Elena sat up from bed. She pulled the blanket in front of her chest, and hugged herself tightly.
“I am still sick and weak… sorry,” she explained uneasily.
Cory said nothing, just sitting there motionlessly and staring at her. For a moment, Elena thought she saw some strange but very dangerous emotions surging at the depth of his deep blue eyes, which frightened her. But eventually, he did nothing.
“Have some good rest, baby,” he said, rising up to his feet. “I will come back and check on you tomorrow. When you get better, I will set up a meeting for you and Lennie.”
Elena couldn’t help but ask, “Can I go home now? I don’t like this place. I want to see my parents.”
Cory just gave her another cold, inapprehensible smile. “Of course not, baby,” he said. “You are going to stay here until you learn how to behave as a good girlfriend.”
