Chapter 8

Cory had changed. The moment Elena saw that dangerous flash flicking through his eyes, she realized Cory had changed into a different person. Each time, when he showed up in front of her, he became more aggressive than before. Each day, the ego inside him grew bigger and bigger. His engagement with Lennie was like a demoniac key that unleashed this hidden beast inside him. Now he had gotten support from dragons. He had become powerful. He didn’t need to play by the rules anymore. And he didn’t need to pretend to be caring or ethical either. When you can get something by intimidation and threats, why bother to coax and act? The moment she saw that ice in Cory’s eyes, Elena knew she was doomed. She watched Cory walk out of the basement, and then heard him lock the door from outside. Her body went cold out of fear. Tears streamed down from the corners of her eyes. She knew she might never find a way to get out of this, but she couldn’t just give up like that. She could never share her mate with others. And she definitely didn’t want Cory to be her mate anymore. She needed to find a way to fight, to escape. She needed a new life without him. “Nyla,” she asked, “please help us get out of this, please.” Nyla went into silence. She couldn’t see a way out either. All their lives, including families, friends, and other connections were confined in this kingdom, which was to say, were all under the surveillance of Cory. There was no other life they could choose, not even a safe place they could hide. The only choice left for them was to go rogue, but that equaled suicide. “We still have our parents, L,” after a few moments, Nyla said with some faint hope in her heart. “They were the Betas of the kingdom. They know the old king. I bet they are trying hard to help us right now, so let’s stay strong and wait, okay? It’s too soon to give up, L. We still have a chance.” Elena nodded her head, pulling up the blanket to dry her tears. Right at that moment, she felt this gut-wrenching pain shoot through her skull. She screeched, head threw back and then smashed on the wall. Nyla bellowed too. She fell down on her fours. “That bastard,” she snarled. “He is sleeping with that b/itch!!!” Elena couldn’t answer her. She couldn’t even think straight with that severe pain. It was like a thousand silver needles were shot into her brain at the same time. And then, they got into her veins and started to swim along with them to every tiny part of her body and pricked and burned. For a moment, Elena couldn’t even make any sound. And then she screamed, wailed, rolling down onto the floor. “Mom! Dad! Somebody help!! Please!!!” She screamed for help, but there was no use of it. When Cory locked her in the basement, he didn’t arrange any guards to watch her, and he forbade anyone from coming downstairs to visit her. He isolated her from everyone else in the world, so all her voices, cries, and begging, would not be heard and answered. That’s how he got her to taste the real despair, and that’s how he was going to mold her into his compliant little girlfriend. “Mom!!Dad!!Somebody!!” Elena squealed, with so many pains and rage in her heart. At first, she couldn’t understand why Cory did that right after she had agreed to be his mistress. And then, when she crawled on the floor, struggling to get up, begging everything which crossed her mind to have it stop, she suddenly realized that Cory was punishing her. He did it on purpose to make her suffer because he was angry that she refused him. He was the supreme King now. He wouldn’t take No for an answer. Even if it was from his mate, from his deeply “loved” girlfriend, he wanted her to cry, to suffer, to beg for his pardon, to admit that she did it wrong to push him away. “Now she must have learned who her real master is.” Elena bet Cory and Lennie must have been laughing and mocking her right now upstairs. It seemed like the offer to have her as their “third” party was now off the table. Elena suddenly had this horrible guess that Cory might not want her permission anymore. If he could hurt her, make her cry, and beg every time he had s*x with others, he would possess the most efficient weapon to tame and manipulate her. She would never be able to walk away because of the pain. And she would be doomed to be his compliant s*x toy. “No,” She cried. “NO!NO!NO!NO! NO!NO!NO!” She screamed again, but that couldn’t make it stop. Half of those sharp silver needles were now back in her brain. They all pricked, stabbed, and poked her all together along with those needles in her spine. She rolled on the floor, wailed like a crazy woman, and almost had a seizure. But none of those stopped the pain. Nyla was the first one to break. She was her wolf. She could feel that betrayal stronger and deeper than her. She cried and begged, “We must have it stop, L. I can’t take it anymore. It will kill us. We must give him what he wants!” “No!” Elena growled on the floor. Angry tears filled her painful eyes. Cory could have her as his “third” party. He could for/ce her to be Lennie’s maid. But he could never ever get her submission. She would never submit herself to anyone, especially to a disgusting, arrogant man like him. She would never allow herself to be manipulated like that. “We find a way to get out of this, or we die, Nyla,” she said, and then threw the back of her head furiously onto the floor. She knocked herself out to put through the pain. ** When Elena opened her eyes again, the sky outside had gone dark. The light that came through the narrow window was dim and gloomy as it was dusk. Elena felt something sticky at the back of her head. She reached out her hand and touched it, and then found that it was her blood. The wound she caused herself had already healed, so did the pain from Cory’s betrayal. But the aftermath left by that punishment was still benumbing her senses. Elena found it hard to move her legs. And she couldn’t even find the strength to support herself up from the floor. “Nyla?” she called her wolf powerlessly to check if she was okay. Nyla gave her a faint hum to suggest that she was still alive, but she was too weak to even open her eyes. And then Elena heard footsteps. The same footsteps she used to be so thrilled to hear. Before all those follies happened, whenever Cory came to meet her, she always ran towards him to greet him with the greatest joy in the world. His foot sound used to be the best music for her. Now it just disgusted her and enhanced the hatred in her heart. Not only his footsteps, his voice, his clothes, his smell, everything about him was now so repulsive to her. In her whole life, Elena had never hated someone that much. She even wanted him to be dead. And maybe that was the only way she could get out of this. A dark idea flashed through her mind. Elena hesitated to catch it. Outside, Cory had already stopped at the door. He took out the key to unlock the door first and then, slowly, he pulled the door open. Inside the room, Elena was lying on the floor lifelessly like a worn rag. Cory pressed his lips, but he didn’t feel worried about her. Elena was a wolf and wolves always heal themselves. “Are you alright, baby?” He asked in this gentle and caring tone Elena used to like so much, stepping inside the room. Elena kept motionlessly on the floor. There was rage and hate burning in her eyes, but when Cory knelt beside her to turn her head to face him, she successfully hid them to the depth. If he wanted to see her as a tamed maiden who was desperate for the salvation of the man, then she would act like one. She would give him everything he wanted for now, but someday in the future, she would take it all back. “Cory,” she called his name using her sweet, weak voice with frightened tears in her eyes. Cory felt satisfied. “What happened, baby?” he bent over to stroke her hair with his hand. There was a faint smile around his lips. “You looked so pale and weak. Did you get sick?” Elena sobbed. “It was the pain,” she said. “It was the pain from the mate bond. Why did you do this to me? I thought you would never hurt me.” “Of course, I wouldn’t,” Cory said. “If you hadn’t upset me today, I wouldn’t have done that. I am a man. I have needs. You know that. If you can’t please me, then I will have to find my pleasure somewhere else. Isn’t that correct?” Elena cried. Tears rolled down from the corners of her eyes. But Cory hadn’t finished with her. “Isn’t that correct, baby? Answer me.” He asked her again, and raised his volume this time. Elena chewed her bottom lip in misery, but eventually, she gave him what he wanted. “Yes,” she said. “You are correct.” Cory then huffed out a sound laugh. He tasted the joy of threats. He then asked, “Don’t you have something else to say to me, baby? About your behavior today? Don’t you owe me an apology?” Elena whimpered under his intimidation, but after some painful tears, she surrendered as he demanded. “Yes,” she said. “I am sorry. I won’t do it again.” “You promise?” “I promise,” she said. Cory finally got satisfied. “That’s my good girl,” he praised, standing up from the floor. Elena then asked him, “Can I leave the basement now? Please. I don’t want to be here. I am scared.” Cory stood beside her, looking down on her from high, and then contemplated. “Sure, why not?” he said after a few moments, and then stretched his lips into this creepy smile which was also scary. “You’ve proved you will be a hell of a maid.”
