She thought she was the one he would always choose—until he didn’t.

When he left her for someone else, it broke her in a quiet way she didn’t even have words for. He moved on fast, acted like she was replaceable, and she forced herself to accept it… even when it hurt.

But now, after months of silence and distance, he’s back. Saying he made a mistake. Saying it was always her. Acting like nothing happened.

The problem is, she’s no longer the same girl who waited.

Now she has to decide: is this love coming back… or just history repeating itself in a different disguise?

📖 Chapter 1 — The Confession That Changed Everything
The campus hall was louder than usual that afternoon. It wasn’t even an event day, but somehow, everyone seemed to have gathered—standing in clusters, laughing too loudly, phones out like something interesting was about to happen. And maybe it was. Because Maya had made a decision she had been avoiding for months. She stood near the edge of the courtyard, fingers tightly wrapped around the strap of her bag. Her heart was beating so fast she could feel it in her throat. Every second felt stretched, like time was slowing down just to embarrass her a little more. “Are you really doing this?” her friend Ada whispered beside her, eyes wide with concern. Maya didn’t look at her. “If I don’t say it now,” she replied quietly, “I never will.” Ada sighed. “Maya… people are watching.” That was exactly the problem. People were always watching. But today, she wasn’t going to hide. Her eyes drifted across the crowd again, searching instinctively for him. Ethan. And of course, he was there. Leaning casually against the steps like he owned the place, laughing with his friends. One hand in his pocket, the other gesturing as he spoke. He looked completely unbothered by everything around him. Especially her. Beside him stood her. Zara. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. Perfect everything. Maya swallowed hard. It still hurt—seeing them like that. Together. Comfortable. Like nothing had ever shifted. But she reminded herself why she came here today. Not to break. Not to beg. But to speak. Before fear could stop her, Maya stepped forward. Ada grabbed her wrist slightly. “Maya—” “I’m okay,” Maya said, even though her voice wasn’t entirely steady. And then she walked. Each step felt heavier as she moved closer to the center of the courtyard. Conversations slowly began to fade as people started noticing her. Whispers started almost immediately. “Is that Maya?” “What is she doing?” “Wait… isn’t she the one who—” Maya’s hands tightened. She didn’t stop. She stopped only when she was a few steps away from Ethan. Right in front of him. The noise around them dimmed, like the world had decided to pause just for this moment. Ethan finally looked at her. And for a second—just a second—something flickered in his expression. Confusion. Then mild curiosity. Then indifference again. “Can I help you?” he asked casually, as if she was just another interruption in his day. That tone. So light. So careless. It almost made her lose her courage. Almost. But Maya lifted her chin. “I need to talk to you,” she said. Zara tilted her head slightly, looking her up and down like she was trying to figure out if Maya was a joke. Ethan sighed. “I’m kind of busy.” “I won’t take long.” That made a few nearby students turn fully toward them now. Phones were already coming out. Someone sensed drama. Ethan noticed too. His jaw tightened slightly. “Say it here then.” Maya hesitated. This was it. No more hiding behind messages. No more overthinking at 2 a.m. No more rehearsed conversations that never happened. Just truth. She exhaled slowly. “I like you,” she said. The courtyard went still. Even the background noise seemed to pause. For a second, Ethan didn’t respond. He just stared at her. Like he was trying to process what she just said. Zara blinked slowly beside him, then let out a small laugh. “Oh,” she said softly, almost amused. Maya felt her cheeks heat up immediately, but she didn’t look away. Ethan finally spoke. “You like me?” he repeated, as if testing the words. Maya nodded once. “Yes.” A few students whispered behind them. “This is crazy…” “She actually said it in front of everyone?” Ethan looked away briefly, rubbing the back of his neck like this was mildly inconvenient. Then he looked at Zara. Just a quick glance. But Maya saw it. She always saw it. That silent communication between them. That ease. That unspoken decision-making that never included her. When he looked back at her, his expression had already changed. “Listen,” he said slowly, “you’re a nice person, Maya.” Her heart sank a little at the word nice. But she stayed still. “But I don’t see you that way,” he continued. The words landed cleanly. No hesitation. No softness. Just finality. Maya blinked once. Then again. Like maybe if she blinked enough, the meaning would change. But it didn’t. Around them, someone whispered, “Ouch…” Another person snickered quietly. Zara didn’t even look surprised. Like she already knew how this would go. Maya forced herself to breathe. “I… I just wanted to tell you,” she said, voice quieter now. Ethan nodded slightly. “Yeah. You did.” That was it. That was all he had to say. No apology for the crowd. No awareness of how exposed she was standing there. No softness in his tone. Just closure. Simple. Clean. Final. But then Zara stepped forward slightly. And everything shifted. “She’s sweet,” Zara said lightly, slipping her hand into Ethan’s arm. “You should be nicer.” Maya’s eyes flicked to her hand. That small gesture said everything. Ownership. Claiming. Ethan didn’t move away. He didn’t correct her either. Instead, he just gave a small shrug, like Zara was right and this was already settled. Maya felt something crack quietly inside her. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just… a quiet breaking. She nodded slowly, as if accepting something she didn’t want to accept. “Okay,” she said softly. Ethan raised a brow. “Okay?” Maya forced a small smile. “Yes. I understand.” She didn’t. But she would. Eventually. A beat of silence followed. The crowd was still watching. Waiting. For tears. For drama. For collapse. But Maya didn’t give them that. Instead, she took a small step back. Then another. Her hands were shaking now, but she kept them hidden behind her bag strap. “I’m sorry for disturbing you,” she said politely. Ethan blinked slightly, like he wasn’t expecting that reaction. “Yeah… it’s fine,” he muttered. Maya turned. And that was when she heard it. A laugh. Not loud. But enough. Zara’s. Soft, amused, satisfied. Like a scene had gone exactly the way she wanted. Maya kept walking. Step by step. Even as her chest tightened. Even as her vision blurred slightly. Even as she felt every eye still on her back. She didn’t run. She didn’t break down there. She didn’t give them the satisfaction. Ada met her halfway, panic in her eyes. “Maya—oh my God, why did you do that?” Maya didn’t answer immediately. She just kept walking until they were far enough from the crowd. Under a tree near the edge of campus, she finally stopped. Silence hit her like a wave. Ada turned her gently. “Talk to me.” Maya stared at the ground. For a long moment, she didn’t speak. Then quietly, she said, “He doesn’t like me.” Ada hesitated. “Maya…” Maya shook her head slightly. “No. It’s okay,” she said, voice calmer than expected. “At least now I know.” But her fingers were trembling. Ada pulled her into a hug immediately, but Maya didn’t fully respond to it. Her mind was somewhere else. Back there. In that courtyard. With his voice. With Zara’s smile. With the way the crowd had watched her like she was entertainment. And for the first time… Maya understood something painful. It wasn’t just that he didn’t choose her. It was that he never even considered her an option worth fighting for. And somewhere across the courtyard, Ethan glanced back once. Just once. Watching her walk away. But he didn’t call her back. Not even when something—small, unfamiliar—tugged at the edge of his chest. He ignored it. Like he always did.
