22 My mother’s eyes went wide. “What? You mean now? You’re feeling the call of the heart flower now?” I stood, giddy that I was feeling it again. After so long without hearing its call, I had been wondering if the first time had been a fluke, if I would ever hear the call again. But here it was, strong and powerful and taking me over. And this time, I was sure I could follow it. “Yes, it’s the flower,” I said, breathless. She glanced around. “What do we do?” The pull of the flower tugged, and it was painful to stand there and not follow it. “I have to go after it.” “Through the forest? Do you remember what happened last night?” “I do, but this time will be different. I’ll be following the flower and be awake. I’ll keep my mind open to Theron and Ramon. Just tell them to follow me.”
