Chapter 3

Elizabeth’s POV I made it to my locker in the nick of time. I opened my locker, retrieved my papers, and slammed the door shut with force. Adrenaline was pumping through my veins, and I was hyperventilating. Jeremy caught up. Confused at my actions, he asked, “What’s...?” He didn’t get to ask that question, as I had gotten a whiff of the most intoxicating smell: oranges and dark chocolate. I pulled him into an abandoned classroom and gestured for him to be quiet. His eyes widened when he saw Alexander walk past. I stood silently next to the wall and took a peek out the window into the hall. Alexander stood still, his nose in the air, and I could see how he took in my scent. "Sh*t, sh*t, sh*t!" I cursed under my breath, "Please do not come in here; please, I beg of you, Moon goddess, let him get distracted somehow." I pleaded, "I seriously cannot handle another rejection right now." Alexander had made his way to the door, and the door handle was pulled halfway down when the most aggravating voice reached my ears. "Alexander, my love, where have you been?” The screeching voice came from the hall: “I have been looking all over for you; we will be late for next period.” I recognize the voice as Stacy’s, a cheerleader who is one of many whores my mate slept with. I watched as she flicked her shoulder-length blond hair over her shoulder and flapped her boring brown eyes at him, trying to seduce him. I had to give it to her. She had held Alex’s attention the longest. I sighed in relief, forgetting that Jeremy had been standing patiently next to me waiting for an explanation. “Alexander and you, huh?” It was not a question but more of a statement. My cheeks turned crimson as I blushed, but at the same time, tears started to run down my cheeks. “It’s hopeless,” I said through tears. “What do you mean?” he asked gently, pulling me into a hug. “It’s a long story. I will tell you tomorrow when this is all over if it works.” I started to sob. I guess that the six days of being rejected had finally gotten the better of me, and now that I am running and hiding from him, the adrenaline has weaned off and I am coming crashing down hopelessly. “Let’s just say, I do not need to be close to him for now. Please, could you hand my English paper to Amy; she will make sure Ms. Clearwater will take it without a word?” He gave me a gentle nod of his head. “Where are you going?” he asked, concerned. “Library, just don’t tell anyone. Please,” I begged, “I’ll see you at lunch. If the teacher asks where I am, make something up.” He gave me a nod of the head and took off for class. Miss Annabel was at the front desk when I entered the library. She was the librarian. Not a werewolf, though, but a fairy. She was mated to one of the werewolf warriors, so she stayed with the werewolf on the pack grounds. It was a bit odd that a cross-mixture occurred, but not uncommon. Usually, a werewolf, or whichever mythical creature it is mated with, will have a pup in each. She gave me a confused smile when she saw me. I think she had a fair idea of how my schedule works, but she also knew that I liked hiding inside the library when I was upset or bothered. I took my seat at the far end of the library. The other students didn’t occupy this table, as I claimed it in my junior year. I would say that the students here were a bit nervous about me, maybe because of my so-called temper. My table had a computer on the side where we could do research if needed, and I needed to do a bit of research on our wolves. See, all our wolves get reincarnated sometime in a thousand years and all get recorded; it’s just the human part that changes, and a wolf gets a new human body. So it shouldn’t be too difficult to find my mate and my wolf's background, or so I hope. I opened the magical web browser that looks similar to Yahoo and Google, except it was only a mythical search engine. Humans couldn't use this search engine as it had too many passwords and magic to crack. Oh yes, humans don’t know we exist except if we are mated to one of them. Yet again, not impossible, but rare. I searched for family trees first. I never actually thought of searching for my family tree, so I was interested in seeing where it would take me. I typed in Wintermoon in the search block, but it barely gave me any information. Just some information on the line indicates that it was killed 1500 years or so ago; further entries on the family tree are non-existent. Odd, I thought. Then I tried my so-called mate’s surname, Wolfgang. That gave me a whole family tree—even the last pup, Alexander. It even gave details about when and where he was born, what time, his weight and size, and his rank. I was confused. “Kona?” “Yes, my sweet girl.” “Why is there no information on my bloodline?” She ignored my question and headed toward the back of my mind. I found it odd that she didn’t answer me. I tried again, this time with our wolves. It pulled up a list of the names of every wolf that existed, their whole pedigree, from their ranks to who they were mated to. I easily found Kevin’s. I started to read his pedigree, and I have to say it was quite interesting. Name: Kevin Rank: Alpha Class One Color: Midnight black with an instinctive crescent silver moon on the left shoulder. Build: 3 x times bigger than the average Alpha werewolf Qualities: strength, leadership, stubbornness, fairness, bravery, willpower, self-confidence, power, overpowering aura, difficulty to handle, ruthless temper, stamina Supernatural powers: Speed, strength, telepathy Weakness: Unknown Mate: Unknown It caught my attention that he didn’t have a fate or any mates listed against his name or his rank. Maybe there was something wrong with the search engine, and I tried someone else. Everyone knew Alpha Jackson’s wolf, Jax, so I tried him next. I knew by heart that he was mated to his Luna Mila, and her wolf’s name was Elorose. As I suspected, Jax came up with his pedigree. Name: Jax: Rank: Alpha class two Color: Grey Build: Alpha werewolf Qualities: strength, leadership, confidence, fairness, bravery, willpower, self-confidence, power, fair temper, stamina Supernatural powers: speed, strength, and love Weakness: His true mate Mate: Elorose (True mate), Eleanor (Second Chance), Kate (Chosen) I was surprised that Jax had so many different mates, but it made sense that he didn’t want to be lonely. I clicked on Elorose’s name, and again, her pedigree popped up. Name: Elorose Rank: Luna Color: Brown Build: Normal Qualities: leadership, fairness, self-confidence, fair temper, stamina Supernatural powers: unconditional love Mate: Jax (True mate), Tom (Chosen) I scratched my head. I found it fascinating. Next up was Kona. I typed her name into the search, and nothing popped up. “Kona, why are you not listed on the search engine?” I asked, surprised at my findings. I could feel her struggle with the question. I gave her a moment as I kept on searching through the names that I found familiar. “Kona, are you going to answer me?” I could feel her sadness radiating inside me. “What’s up?” “It’s difficult to explain—well, actually, it’s hard to explain,” she answered. “Well, please try. I need to understand.” I was busy getting annoyed with her and started to tap my foot impatiently on the floor. Why was she ignoring me constantly? “My first human died very young in a rogue attack. There wasn’t much that I could have done, except watch how my human got brutally murdered.” She released a breath before she continued. “She was only twelve years old.” I could feel the pain radiating from her at the loss of her human part. “My second,” she took another deep breath, struggling to continue, “committed suicide after her mate rejected her.” I gave her a wary look. “How did she manage to do that without you interfering like you are doing now?” I asked. “I was young and inexperienced at the time and not prepared for what had to come. Mary-Anne was young, beautiful, and your age. She met her mate on her birthday, the same as you did. She was a low-class omega and had very low self-esteem. The alpha in question was a ruthless monster of an alpha from the Silver Claw Pack.” She looked sad as she started to tell her story. “Isn’t he a Lycan?” I asked. I had heard the name in our history class. “He was the Creeper King,” she corrected; “he met her by chance at a meeting the wolves held. He had needed to attend the meeting due to the nonstop rogue attacks on the packs. Mary-Anne was from the Bloodmoon pack in the north; she was born as a normal werewolf, and even though she carried Creeper blood, not many could say that they both had bloodlines running through her veins. She was exceptional, talented, soft-spoken, and kind by heart. Due to her rank and her species, he rejected her on the spot, humiliating her in front of other Alphas. He didn’t know that she was a half-breed, and before I could shut her up and lock her mouth, she said that she, Mary-Anne, accepted the rejection and walked away. I just couldn’t fix the bond. She shut me out, and before I managed to break through, she had ended our lives. She jumped. Even Kevin tried, pleading with Kurt Blackheart and telling him that he would regret it and go insane. The hard-headed man didn’t listen. He believed that he had power and would be able to live without a mate. He conceived a son, but he never kept a chosen mate. She was some she-wolf he impregnated. We both broke down, Kevin and I. I promise you, it’s much worse than breaking you now.” She looked me straight in the eyes and said, “You see, we can still fix it; I can still fix our mate bond with Alex. As long as you don’t accept the rejection, all will not be lost. I can’t explain to you how ruthless heartache is. When the mate accepts the rejection, the mate bond fully breaks down to nothing between our two souls. It weakens us as wolves. And in the end, our human side slowly loses its mind. When that happens, our wolf part forces a shift and the human soul gets lost; our wolves start looking for their true mates, not finding them and claiming them as our mates, creating chaos.” “What sort of chaos?” I was interested to know what would happen. “Search for the great war of 1620.” I did just that. I gave Kona a questionable look after I read the article. “That was Kevin, having a ball between the werewolves, lycans, and creepers, killing and torturing innocent wolves looking for me,” she explained. “Okay, so what happened the first time? How did Kevin work around not having you?” “When a werewolf doesn’t find his mate, he can choose one for himself, or if he is lucky, the Moon Goddess will bless him with a second chance mate.” That we have learned in class in Werewolf Life Skills 101. “The only time you get a second chance with your chosen mate is when your mate has been killed in battle or was sick and died. Not by suicide after rejection.” That I didn’t know. “You need to keep in mind that when a werewolf loses his mate and he hasn’t met her yet, he will still feel tormenting pain, even for a short moment. It’s the bond breaking between the two souls; that is how werewolves know that they have lost part of their soul.” “Kevin’s human never took a chosen mate, even though he knew that his mate, me, was killed. We can sense it, and we get a glimpse of what happens when it happens. In any case, Kevin’s human had stayed single; he impregnated a random she-wolf years later (which is rare; usually you need to mark the person before you can have any pups) to have an heir to his pack, and he conceived a daughter. Her human, named Rosy-Anne, took over the pack.” "Man, but Kevin is full of sh*t, he truly wants only his beloved Kona," It wasn’t a question; it was just a statement that I made, and Kona reacted to it. “Yes,” Kona answered, “you need to understand that when the Moon Goddess created us, we were created in pairs; one soul broke down into two wolves. Even when the Moon Goddess gives us a second chance to mate, it doesn’t mean that we will accept it, as we are stronger with our true and fated half.” She kept quiet for a second as if she were thinking about telling me more, and then continued, “Kevin and I are a special breed of mates.” I gave her a suspicious look, and she continued, “I am directly descended from the Moon Goddess.” “So can the mate bond be bonded again? Should the two still be alive after rejecting one another?” “If both humans reject one another, the bond breaks and our wolf part goes mad looking for our other half, but if one doesn’t accept the rejection, there is always a chance to correct their mistake.” I was worried. That was for sure. “Why do you think I don’t have a family tree on the search engine?” I changed the topic, and I tried again with my previous question, hoping that she might give us some insight on the matter. “You will learn soon enough,” she promised. ****
