Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke
“Adrian… please tell me this isn’t what it looks like.”
Elena Hart’s voice trembled as she stood frozen in the doorway of the master bedroom. Her fingers clutched the cold metal doorknob, as if letting go would make the nightmare real.
Rain pounded against the tall windows of the Kingsley mansion, lightning slicing through the darkness.
But the storm outside was nothing compared to the one tearing through her chest.
On the bed—her bed—sat Sophia Bennett.
Her best friend.
Sophia leaned against the pillows, wrapped lazily in silk sheets Elena had chosen herself. Her long dark hair spilled over her shoulders, and the faint smile on her lips made Elena’s stomach twist.
Standing beside the bed was Adrian Kingsley.
Her husband.
His white shirt was already buttoned, his expression calm—too calm. He looked more like a man handling business than one caught betraying his wife.
Silence filled the room.
Elena’s heart pounded painfully.
“This… this must be a misunderstanding,” she whispered.
Her desperate gaze moved between them.
“Sophia, tell him. Tell Adrian this isn’t what it looks like.”
Sophia tilted her head.
Then she laughed.
Soft. Cold.
“Oh, Elena,” she said gently. “You still don’t get it?”
A chill ran down Elena’s spine.
“There’s nothing to explain,” Adrian said.
His voice was flat.
Emotionless.
Elena shook her head slowly. “No… Adrian, we’ve been married for three years. Sophia is my best friend. You wouldn’t—”
“Best friend?” Sophia cut in with a smirk. “Is that what you thought I was?”
Elena stared at her.
Memories flooded her mind—late-night talks, laughter, secrets, trust.
“You knew,” Elena whispered.
Sophia shrugged. “I’ve known Adrian longer than you.”
“That’s not true…”
“Oh, but it is.”
“Enough.”
Adrian grabbed a folder from the bedside table and tossed it onto the bed.
The papers slid across the silk.
Elena looked down.
Divorce Agreement.
Her hands began to shake.
“You’re divorcing me?” she whispered.
“I already signed it,” Adrian replied.
The room felt suffocating.
“No… Adrian, you can’t be serious.”
“Elena, don’t make this harder than it needs to be,” Sophia said casually, stepping closer to him, her hand resting on his arm like it belonged there.
Something inside Elena cracked.
“You planned this,” she said.
Sophia didn’t deny it.
“Adrian,” Elena stepped forward. “Look at me.”
He didn’t.
“I love you.”
For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes.
Then it disappeared.
“You should have thought about that before cheating on me,” he said coldly.
Elena froze.
“What?”
“I saw the photos.”
“What photos?”
“You entering a hotel with another man.”
Her breath caught. “That was a business meeting!”
“At midnight?” he asked sharply.
“The deadline was the next day—we had to—”
“Stop lying.”
His voice cut through her like a blade.
Tears filled her eyes. “I would never cheat on you.”
But Adrian looked at her like she meant nothing.
“Adrian… maybe we should just tell her,” Sophia said.
Elena’s heart skipped.
Sophia turned to her slowly.
Then she smiled.
“I’m pregnant.”
The words echoed.
Elena blinked. “I’m… sorry, what?”
Sophia placed a hand on her stomach. “Adrian’s child.”
The world tilted.
Elena turned to Adrian. “Tell me she’s lying.”
Silence.
That silence shattered everything.
Elena staggered back, gripping a chair.
Three years.
Gone.
“You planned this,” she whispered again.
“Elena, you were never right for him,” Sophia said softly.
Elena looked at Adrian, desperate. “Please… we can fix this.”
“There’s nothing to fix.”
He picked up the papers and held them out.
“Sign.”
Rain slammed harder against the windows.
“I won’t,” Elena whispered.
His expression darkened.
“Then leave.”
Her breath caught. “This is my home.”
“No,” Sophia said quietly. “It isn’t anymore.”
Adrian walked to the door and pulled it open.
Cold air rushed in.
“Get out.”
Something inside Elena finally broke.
The last piece of hope.
Slowly, she placed the papers back on the bed.
“Fine.”
She walked toward the door, each step heavy.
When she reached Adrian, she paused.
For a moment, she looked at him—the man she once believed was her forever.
“One day… you’ll regret this,” she said quietly.
He didn’t respond.
Elena walked down the long hallway alone.
Wedding photos lined the walls.
Smiles that now felt like lies.
She reached the front door and opened it.
Rain poured down instantly, soaking her.
Behind her, the mansion doors shut.
The sound echoed like an ending.
Elena stepped into the storm, walking down the long driveway.
Alone.
Lightning flashed.
Her hand slowly moved to her stomach.
Because there was something Adrian didn’t know.
Something Sophia didn’t know.
A secret she had just discovered that day.
Elena was pregnant.
Tears mixed with rain as she whispered,
“I’ll protect you.”
