CHAPTER ONE — THE GIRL WHO SHOULD NOT EXIST
Silence followed Aria everywhere. Not the peaceful kind. The heavy, suffocating kind—the kind that lived beneath her skin, curled around her throat, and held her voice hostage. She stood at the massive iron gates of Silvercrest Academy, staring up at the place everyone said she had no right to enter. A place for warriors. For elites. For wolves with strength, power, and lineage. Aria had none of those things. Students flooded through the gates in groups, laughing, shifting, bursting with energy. Cloaks billowed, paws hit the stone paths, sparks of elemental training flashed from fingertips. She stayed still, gripping the strap of her worn bag until her knuckles ached. You shouldn’t be here. They’ll know you’re different. They always know. A breeze swept across the courtyard, carrying scents of pine, magic, and wolf. Aria inhaled deeply and stepped inside. Immediately, whispers followed her. “Who’s the girl with the hood?” “I think she’s new.” “Why does she look like she’s going to puke?” Aria ignored them and headed toward the orientation hall, keeping her head low. The academy was nothing like she imagined from the pamphlets. It was bigger, colder, alive with floating lanterns and silver banners fluttering above tall stone towers. A student bumped her shoulder roughly. “Watch it,” he snapped. “Don’t block the path.” She stumbled but didn’t fight back. She couldn’t—not with a voice she didn’t have and a power she could never reveal. Her fingers twitched as warmth pulsed under her skin—dangerous, rising, wanting to spill out. She forced it down. Hard. Not here. Not where someone could see. She hurried through the corridors, clutching her admission letter. Healing Division. Instructor: Alpha Kael Draven. Even just the name made her stomach tighten. She’d heard things—rumors whispered late at night by girls in her village. “He’s the coldest Alpha in the North.” “His aura could paralyze a lesser wolf.” “He never smiles.” “He doesn’t feel anything anymore.” Aria didn’t know if any of it was true. But she hoped he wouldn’t pay much attention to her. She needed time to blend in before anyone realized she wasn’t the powerless omega they assumed she was. She rounded a corner— —and ran straight into a wall of muscle. Her breath caught. He stood before her like a storm made flesh: tall, broad, dressed in a fitted black coat that contrasted sharply with his pale skin. His hair was dark, slightly tousled, as if he’d just come from training. But his eyes— His eyes froze her. Silver. Sharp. Too aware. Too deep. Alpha Kael Draven. Aria’s heart lurched painfully. She lowered her gaze immediately. He didn’t move. His presence radiated through the hall like ice spreading across glass. Students passing by straightened automatically, sensing the shift. “Watch your step,” Kael said, voice low and smooth, with an unmistakable Alpha undertone. Aria’s breath trembled. She lifted her hands quickly and signed an apology. Kael’s brows twitched—just slightly. “You don’t speak,” he said, not asking—observing. She shook her head. For a long moment, he simply looked at her. Not with disgust, not with pity—just a deep, unreadable curiosity that made her skin warm. Then something happened. A spark—so faint she thought she imagined it—jumped between them. A breathless pull tugged at her chest, right where her wolf slept in silence. Kael inhaled sharply. The world tilted. For the first time in years, Aria felt… seen. Exposed. Like he could somehow sense every secret she tried so hard to bury. She stepped back quickly. His jaw tightened, a flicker of something passing through his eyes before he masked it. “Orientation is that way.” He pointed behind her. “Don’t wander.” Aria nodded fast. His gaze dropped to her shaking hands. For a moment, his expression softened—barely. Then the cold returned. He walked past her, his scent of crisp frost lingering in the air. Aria pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady her pulse. What was that? No—no, it had to be nothing. Just nerves. Just fear. Just— She shook her head. She wasn’t going to think about it. Not now. Not ever. --- The orientation hall was bright and buzzing with energy. Students grouped together, chatting loudly. Some were already shifting between partial forms—wolf ears, tails, glowing eyes—showing off. Aria sat in the back row, hands tucked in her lap. A girl with red curls glanced at her. “Hey, you’re the quiet one from the gate. What’s your name?” Aria lifted her hand and signed Aria. “…You’re mute?” the girl asked. Aria nodded, bracing herself. Instead of mocking her, the girl’s eyes widened. “That’s kind of cool. I’ve never met a mute wolf.” Aria blinked. Cool? That was new. But before she could relax, another student turned around. “Why would the academy accept a wolf who can’t even speak? Healing division or not, she’s useless.” Aria’s stomach tightened. The girl beside her glared. “Shut up, Darren.” “No, I’m serious,” Darren said loudly. “We train warriors here. Not fragile omegas who can’t even talk back.” Aria lowered her gaze, jaw clenched. The comments weren’t new, but they still stung. More whispers floated through the room: “Probably here on charity.” “Omega bloodline.” “She won’t last a week.” Aria pulled her hood lower. Her skin tingled again—her power pushing against its boundaries, wanting out. She squeezed her hands into fists. No. Stay quiet. Stay small. Stay invisible. The headmaster entered, beginning the orientation speech. Aria tried to focus, but her mind kept drifting back to Kael. To the spark she felt. To the way his eyes lingered. She hated that she noticed. She hated that she felt… something. When orientation ended, she slipped out of the hall quickly, avoiding further stares. She didn’t want to be in a crowd. Didn’t want to be seen. She navigated the quieter corridors of the Healing Wing, where herbs hung in glowing jars and soft light pulsed through enchanted stones. The smell of mint and rainwater eased her nerves slightly. Finally—silence she didn’t have to fear. She exhaled— And froze. Footsteps echoed behind her. Slow. Heavy. Intentional. She turned. Kael stood at the far end of the corridor, arms crossed, watching her with a look she couldn’t decipher. “Your division meets here tomorrow,” he said calmly. “Do not be late.” Aria nodded. But he didn’t leave. He stepped closer, gaze scanning her face, her trembling hands, her entire presence. “Stay away from the east wing after sundown,” he added quietly. “It’s not safe.” Aria nodded again, silently. Kael held her gaze longer than he should have. Long enough for her pulse to trip. Then he turned and walked away, cloak sweeping behind him. Aria watched him disappear into the shadows. Her chest tightened. She didn’t know why… But something told her her life at Silvercrest Academy was not going to be quiet. Not anymore.
