The first new moon after equinox it was, when the stranger came stumbling out of the sunset—straight toward our well, our goats, and my sister Enotu. I gripped my spear and made ready to challenge him, for I saw that the stranger was a man, yet he seemed not to see us at all. He staggered past us without a word or glance, made straight for the well, and all but fell into the water. Enotu and I exchanged amazed looks as he drank noisily.
"What lies west of here, sister?" Enotu asked me, for as huntswoman I had ranged further into the wild lands than most.
"Scrub plains, then desert, with mountains beyond," I recalled. "I have never seen nor heard of any people living there, and I know nothing of the mountains."
