LILY
Ring…..ring …ring
The alarm rang straight into my subconsciousness, I groaned as I moved my hands groggily searching for the goddamn alarm to turn it off.
“Turn off that awful sound for goodness sakes Lily, don’t make me come over and make you.” Silas my brother yelled from across the door.
I groan as I roll across the sheets and knocked the alarm off it’s stand, the alarm rand once and sputtered out, great another alarm gone, that was the third one this month.
“I believe that alarm indicates that it’s time for you to get your lazy ass out of bed and get to your chores, else you’ll be late for school, and you know what happens when you get late seven times in a roll at school.” Levi, another of my brother said from behind my door.
Another strike on my record that I don’t want, no thank you.
“Don’t make me get you out of there, Lily, you wouldn’t like it if I do.”
I eye the door just to make sure, it was still locked, my pocket knife was right under my pillow just in case.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” I say as I got out of bed.
“Good morning Sera.” I say to my teddy bear
Yeah, I’m still attached to my teddy bear, who cares, I did some stretching and mentally prepared myself for the chaos waiting outside my door.
“Lily!” Levi said warningly.
I pasted a smile on my face as I opened the door.
“Good morning Levi.”
“I thought I would have to drag you out myself, you’re very lucky the door was locked, you’re being way too lazy these days, do I need to remind you what happens to lazy brats.”
“No Sir.” I say and lowered my gaze, “it won’t happen again.”
“It better not, for your own good.” he said, staring at me like he wanted to make a move, but something held him back.
That’s odd, Levi never holds back, never failed to Correct my ways, especially when he felt I needed it.
“My room’s a mess, Lily do the needful.” Was all he said. I blew out a breath, I was lucky to have escaped this one.
My chores consist of putting my brothers room in order, doing their dirty laundry, cleaning the house, cooking, among other things. You might think that there’s really not much work to be done here, but trust me when I say there is, especially when you have seven brothers, each of them with nasty attitude and bad habits that seem to get worse as they advance in age, there was no way I could avoid doing them before school, believe me, I’ve tried and I had the scars to prove them.
So I set about doing the chores, ignoring the Blondie in Levi’s room or the stench of weed, drugs and alcohol in Mark’s, dirty condoms littered all over the floor in the living room, God, this place is a mad house. No matter how clean every single morning is, it doesn’t even get any better, new day, new mess.
“Are you preparing breakfast or not, cos I’m starving.” Silas yelled as he came down the stairs, always so grumpy in the morning.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” I hurried to the kitchen and nearly bumped into the least person I wanted to see this morning.
“You’re looking good this morning Lily, you must have had a very good night sleep, pity I couldn’t join you.” Peter the least of my least favorite brothers. You would think that being named after Bible characters by my mom they would at least follow in the paths of their predecessors, you couldn’t be more wrong, none of them, from Levi, to Silas, Mark, Peter to John and the twins, David and Daniel has an iota of decency and human sympathy in them, Peter was the worst.
He'd been so clear about what his intentions to me were, touching me in inappropriate places, making snide comments about the things he wanted to do with me, sneaking into my bedroom at night to play with me, I shiver at the memories.
“You're so lucky I've been occupied by other things lately otherwise I would have paid you visits but don't get your hopes up, it wouldn’t last for long.” Peter said, looked at me once more, licking his lips and left.
Speaking of that lately, my brothers has been walking on eggshells around me, there were no more beatings, unnecessary touches, snide comments, It was like they were wary of me now, Good.
They should be, I don't know how much longer this charade of theirs would last, but if they ever decide to go back to the old way, well, they would become very acquainted with my pocket knife, I'm done being their punching bag, it’s high time I stood up for myself.
I prepared breakfast and placed it on the table, as if on cue, they all filed in took a seat and in a matter of minutes the entire food was gone, nothing was left, not even for me. I should just poison this whole lot, too bad they were the only family I had even though they were a bunch of ingrates.
“You were a bit excessive on the salt today, I expect better next time.” Levi said cleaning his lips on the tablecloth.
“I could barely eat the bacon, it was too hard.”
“I've told you times without number not to use this plate to serve me, I have my special plate.”
And so the complaint went and on till I couldn't bear it any longer.
“Where do you think you're going.” Silas barked.
“I'm gonna be late for school” I said grabbing my bag. I can't afford to go Late to school seven times in this month. It would be bad on my grade score, and I really needed for my records not to have any blemishes, it was my ticket out of this hellhole.
“Don't think we don't know about your plan, scrap it out, college is not for you, there's no way we are letting you out of our sight.” Peter said
“Can’t afford to let our precious goods get tainted by the outside world.”
What the hell is that supposed to mean, I narrowed my eyes are suspiciously at them, whatever the hell they were planning can't be good.
I headed it for the door anyways
“Oh and Lily.” I turned back.
“Happy 18th birthday.” Levi said with the gleam in his eyes.
Now why does that feel like a threat.
