I know I’m a bad friend for keeping things from her when she’s always been so open with me, even with things I definitely do not want to hear. If she knew about my brothers I doubt she’ll be able to sit still without confronting them, she was like that sometimes.
“Is it because of your brothers, you know you can talk to me about it right?”
“It’s nothing really” I say placatingly. “I just needed to relieve myself that’s all” I continued, pasting a smile on my face to allay her fears.
She narrowed her eyes at me before nodding her head, accepting my not quite hidden lie.
“Alright then, if you say so.” She said.
“You need to fix your make up well girl, I have a feeling our dear Zack might ask you out today.” she said.
I gasped and blushed, “Don’t say that, you can’t be serious!”
“Oh! I’m a hundred percent sure about that, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but Zack likes you, why else would he go to this length to please you.”
I did a double take, what’s that what of this was all about, Zack had feeling for me.
“No, you must be mistaken, Zack and I have been close for a long time, he never really did mention anything to me.”
“Maybe because he wasn’t so sure how you’ll react, that boy has been making puppy eyes at you for ages, I can’t help but wonder how in the world you didn’t notice, even everyone at school knew about it.
My, then I must have been really blind indeed, even everyone knew about it but me.
“The question is, when he finally mans up to ask you out, which I know he will, would you accept him or not, although I really think you should, being that he is a cute guy and all that, don’t tell him I said that.”
“You know I can’t be with him, my brothers would will kill me” I said.
“Enough about your brothers and their nonsense, this is your happiness we’re talking about, are you going to let your brothers dictate that too, will you let them ruin your chance at happiness as well.”
She’s right, I know she is, but that doesn’t make things easier, it doesn’t mean everything would work out fine just like that, call me pessimistic but that’s just the way it is. Her world and mine are totally two different things.
“Think about it Lily, you should really give Zack a chance when he asks you.” she said.
“I’ll think about it.” I said instead. She seemed to accept that and then did my makeup all little and proceeds to drag me out of the rest room.
“Come on, we left a birthday celebration behind, let’s not keep poor Zackie waiting.”
Zackie!
I nearly laughed out loud, just how in the hell did she managed to come up with that.
Zack sat at the table looking like a lost sheep, when he saw us he brightened up immediately.
“I thought you both had abandoned me I was just about to come for you both.”
“Sorry we took so long.” Belinda said and added, “Girl trouble and all that… which reminds me Zack, I have to go, I’m going to be way past my curfew.” She said, took her things and winked at me.
Wait… what, this was not part of our discussion, a curfew! Belinda has never had a curfew in all the years I’ve knew her. I glared at her.
“I’m sure you both need some time alone to yourselves to sort out some things.”
“No, we don’t.”
“Yes you definitely do.” She glared at me back
“You can’t be leaving me here Lindy” I say desperately knowing fully well why she was leaving.
“Oh I sure I’m.”
“Who’s gonna drive you home” Zack said chivalrously ever the gentleman.
“No worries, I can manage by myself, I’ll just take a cab to go, I’ll be home in no time, meanwhile you both have some serious talking to do, I expect you both to have something good to tell me later.” she said.
“Lindy!” I called again with a desperate plea on my voice, but she only just waved and breezed out with a “Bye girl, you got this, you go girl.”
And I was left alone with Zack, we sat awkwardly at the table for some time staring out our empty plate.
“Why don’t I pour you a drink or something.” Zack said.
“No thanks, I think I’m okay.”
“How about a.”
“It’s okay Zack, you don’t have to get me anything.”
The silence between us was never racking.
Just when I couldn’t bear it any longer and I was about to leave, Zack blurted about all of a sudden.
“So will you be my girlfriend, Lily.”
I was stunned to even make a move.
Here we go, the dreaded question.
Oh boy, what have I gotten myself into.
