2. WHAT WAS THAT

The car came to a stop and the guys stepped out, the driver walking around to the passenger side. Meghan introduced me to the passenger, Kyle, and then to Luke. I managed to get out a “nice to meet you” at almost a whisper volume. “Have you ladies been to the bazaar before?” Kyle asked. “No, we’ve been wanting to go!” Meghan excitedly replied. “Well then shall we?” Kyle asked while opening the back door to the car and motioning for Meghan to have a seat. The traitor left my side and sat down without scooting over for me to slide in.

Luke looked at me with a slight smile and sympathetic eyes as he opened the passenger door for me. I thought for sure he was doing this for Kyle just as much as I was doing this for Meghan which for some reason, made me feel more comfortable. I paused as I passed by him, a calm settling over me, and I thanked him for opening my door. I didn’t know what came over me to make me feel so calm, but I relished the moment for a second. We started the drive with Meghan and Kyle doing most of the talking while I silently admired Luke’s car. This is the nicest car I have ever been in and I was nervous just riding in it. Luke looked over at me inquisitively. I wonder what he was thinking. Did he know that I wasn’t used to nice things?

“So Kailee, how long have you and Meghan known each other?” Luke asked. My name rolling off his tongue sent shivers down my spine. I regained composure and carefully answered “a year or so.” Truthfully, Meghan and I knew each other for years. I moved around a lot, and we shared foster parents a couple of times, but I would be shipped out to a different home, normally within a few weeks, so I tried not to get close to anyone. I’d keep to myself and hope the new couple wouldn’t find out about my flaws.

“You two are polar opposites” Luke laughed. “Yeah, she’s definitely more outgoing than I am,” I said. “Do you have any idea what we’re doing tonight?” Luke asked. Meghan heard the question and joined in “yes, we want to do the drive-in, carousel, the scream machine, and the wooden roller coaster.” Just thinking of some of those rides made me want to vomit and Luke looked over at me as if he knew. Meghan went back to talking to Kyle and Luke whispered “I’ll do whatever you’re doing” I smiled at him with this puppy dog smile and then I immediately felt my cheeks get red. I didn’t know why I was being so weird, going from super nervous to completely relaxed.

As we pulled up, I saw a speaker to place your order and then a box office booth where you pull up to get your tickets. Luke looked over at me wondering what he was getting tickets for. To his relief, I told him I’d place the order. He rolled down his window and I started to speak. The woman on the speaker couldn’t hear me so I tried to project my voice to no avail. I rolled my eyes in frustration and unbuckled my seat belt. I looked at Luke and said “excuse me”, then I proceeded to lean over him and out his window. Holy cow, this man smelled like heaven. As I squeezed between the steering wheel and Luke, I felt his hand on my back to make sure I didn’t fall. My body wanted to stay this close to him forever. I had to regain my train of thought, not knowing what was going on with me. “We need 4 tickets for the carousel and drive-in and then 2 tickets for the scream machine and wooden roller-coaster” I ordered into the speaker and this time I was disappointed they heard me clearly as I’d have to return to my seat. As I slithered carefully backward, we were face to face. For a moment, it was like nobody else was in the car. He smelled like cinnamon and pine and all I could think about was kissing his plump lips. He stared at me just as intensely, like time was standing still. A honk from the car behind us got me out of this trance and I tried to slither the rest of the way to my seat when Luke grabbed my waist and helped me.

What just happened? That was the weirdest, sexiest, craziest thing that has ever happened to me. Meghan was actually silent for once as we pulled up to get our tickets. I attempted to give Luke half of the amount of the tickets and he just looked at me with a glare that said don’t even think of it. He didn’t have to say a word as I put my money away and thanked him. My headache was worsening and I could feel my pulse within it. We found a place to park and I started to open my door when Luke placed his hand on my knee stopping me. His eyes glazed over for a moment and then Kyle grabbed the tickets and he and Meghan got out of the car and started to walk away.
