It was silent in the car for a moment before Luke turned his body towards me with a serious look on his face. “I need to know where you’re from,” he said. Surprised and not ready to answer that question, I asked “Why?” “What pack are you from, Kailee,” he asked. Confused at his question “I don’t know what you mean”, I answered. “It’s clear we’re mates but our bond is not as strong as all my studies said it would be, so maybe it has something to do with the pack you’re from.” I was utterly confused and now getting upset Meghan left me with this man who was apparently crazy.
“Luke, I don’t know what you are talking about. I’m not from a pack” I said sternly. He looked at me deeply and cupped my cheek. My body gave in and I closed my eyes and pressed against his hand. The pounding in my head eased and I was more confused than ever. I opened my eyes and he was still staring at me. He calmly said “I don’t know about your past and it’s clear you don’t want to let me in right now. I don’t really know how to even start explaining things to you without knowing what you know.” I told him “Why don’t you start from the beginning, because I assure you, I don’t know anything that you’re talking about.”
Luke released his hand from my cheek and looked straight forward perplexed. After a moment, he said “I think it’s easier if I showed you if that’s okay with you.” There was something about him that I just trusted and so, I agreed and with that his eyes glazed over again for a moment and then we left the parking area. I asked him about Meghan and Kyle and he told me someone from their pack would be coming to get them. All this pack and mate talk was confusing me further.
We drove towards the outskirts of town near the wooded area. I had never gone into the woods here but always wanted to explore them. He took a turn onto a path that I wasn’t even sure was a road, but as we went further in, you could see the tire tracks. Once we had driven a while, I asked where he was taking me “to my home”. He answered. During our drive, I continued to look out the window. The trees were lit by just the moonlight, making it difficult to see. I thought I saw a dog or a wolf running and I sat up and strained my eyes, trying to see through the trees. I heard Luke slightly laugh, “don’t worry. You’re safe”, he grabbed my hand and reassured me. His touch was calming and I didn’t want him to let go. He continued to hold my hand and drove a few more minutes until we came up to a low, wooden fence with an opening for the car.
Up ahead, it looked like a town with buildings and lights. We drove by some small homes and people who waved at our passing vehicle. I wasn’t sure if they were waving at Luke or if this was just a friendly town. We pulled up to a very large building that looked like a hotel. On the steps was a man who looked almost identical to Luke but older with his arm around the waist of a nice-looking woman who was smiling. I was staring at them and didn’t realize the car had been turned off and my door was being opened.
I thanked the man who opened the door for me as Luke came around the back of the car and placed his left hand on the small of my back and took my right hand in his, leading me up the steps. Luke let go of me as we reached the couple standing there. “Mother,” he said while he kissed her cheek. "Father,” he said while they hugged, then he turned to me, “this is Kailee, my mate,” he said. His mother's eyes lit up beautifully. “It is so wonderful to meet you, Kailee,” his mother said, “I have wondered who would be the lucky one to have my son,” said his father. Luke turned to me, “Kailee, this is my mother, Laura, and father, Francisco.” “Nice to meet you both” I smiled, but my eyes must have given the confusion away as Luke stepped in. “Mother, Father, can we go to my office? There’s some things I need to explain to Kailee and I would like your help.” “Of course,” his mother said, and she led the way through the front doors.
Luke, being a true gentleman, motioned for me to go next. As we entered, the entire foyer opened up. We walked to a staircase and made our way to the 3rd floor. There was nothing in this home that didn’t leave me in awe. We walked down a long hallway with doors on both sides and then came to double doors at the end of the hallway. They opened to a large office with a beautiful desk with three sides that was near a large window that went from the ceiling to the floor. You can see the entire town from here. There were two couches on one side of the room, a bookshelf and two large chairs that sat in front of the desk. We walked to the couches and sat down.
I was nervous trying to process what was going on, trying to hide the headache that was getting worse as it got later. I noticed Luke’s eyes get that glazed-over look and I must have been looking at him questionably when he looked in my direction because he said “I was just filling my parents in. Mom, Dad, Kailee is my mate but her scent is not very strong. When I asked what pack she was in she didn’t know what I was talking about and I thought you both could help me explain.” “Kailee, is there anything you can tell me about your childhood?” Laura asked kindly.
The way she spoke was how I always pictured a mother would be, calm and reassuring. I took a deep breath, being calmed by Luke’s scent, “I was abandoned when I was born. I was raised in different foster homes” was all I managed to get out before tears filled my eyes. I felt comfortable enough to speak openly with Luke and his parents, but now I was afraid they’d kick me out like everyone from my past. Francisco looked at Luke with a questioning look. “I’m sorry for bothering you all,” I said as I got up and headed for the door. Luke immediately followed me and grabbed me as I made it to the hall. “Please Kailee, stay. We don’t want you to leave. I know this is all confusing and we’ll take as much time as we need to explain it all to you, but please don’t leave me”, Luke pleaded.
This was the first time in my life someone had wanted me to stay and I was lost in the thought. “Please?” He asked. I slightly nodded and he led me back into the office and to the couch. “We know this must be a lot to hear, sweetheart, and we want you to be as comfortable as possible. No matter what your story is, we are so happy you’re here now and you’re safe”, Laura reassured me. Her words made tears stream down my cheeks and she gave me the most motherly hug I had ever felt.
