Throughout the night, Luke and his parents explained they were wolves, we were wolves. They weren’t sure how my scent wasn’t stronger or why I hadn’t shifted at 18 years old like other wolves.
Luke was the Alpha of this pack and I was his mate, which would make me Luna one day. That meant, together, we were the leaders of this pack. They asked about my life and I explained that I was in and out of homes mostly due to me being different. I internalize things to the point I get horrible headaches that immobilize me. They thought that was strange, as wolves don’t normally get sick.
They also said a wolf doesn’t give up its pups, so they weren’t sure why I would have been given up at birth. We were both asking questions throughout the night when Luke’s phone rang. He answered and it was Meghan looking for me. I never owned a phone because I never had anyone that would call it. She asked where I was and told Luke that Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds were mad I was out so late. Luke’s one eye turned black and the other remained blue as he sternly but calmly told Meghan “You let the Reynolds know that she is safe and she will not be returning. She is no longer their concern” and hung up.
I tried to explain that I had signed a rent agreement that would allow me to stay there till I was 21, so I had to go back because they could sue me for the money I owed them. Luke’s eyes were both now blue and he cupped my cheeks “I am here now and I will take care of you. I don’t want you to worry again. I know this is all new to you, but while I am alive, my job is to protect you,” and then he kissed my forehead. With that, my anxiety disappeared.
Luke sat back down next to me on the couch and it was silent as they let me process the things they had told me. “Tell me about your wolf,” I asked Luke, “how do you speak to him?” Luke smiled at me, “My wolf’s name is Zane. I speak to him in my mind similar to how I can communicate with anyone from my pack at any time. We share the same body. Would you like to see him?” he asked. “Yes! Please” I said. His mother smiled and smiled at my excitement and we walked downstairs. One of the men outside handed Luke a pair of shorts which he placed near the tall grass. Luke stood in front of me. “Ready to meet Zane?” He asked and I nodded.
Within just a few seconds, a beautiful, large, black wolf stood in front of me. Luke’s clothes tore off when he transitioned to his wolf form. I brushed my hand over his fur. He was the most incredible animal I have ever seen. I walked to the front of him and he sweetly pushed his nose on my hand and bent down. “I think he wants you to go for a ride”, Laura said. I climbed on his back and Zane stood up. Francisco showed me where to grab ahold of his neck and off we went.
At first, Zane ran slowly, giving me the opportunity to look around, but as we reached a clearing, he sped up. As we went faster, I practically laid down with my face next to his ears and arms wrapped around his neck to hold on. It was exhilarating for me! I couldn’t believe that just this morning I was at work waiting on diners and here I was riding a wolf who is apparently my gorgeous mate. When we got back to his parents, Zane bent down and Francisco helped me off. He grabbed the shorts in his mouth and carried them into the tall grass.
A moment later, Luke walked out of the tall grass with nothing but the shorts on. His chest was that of a god and the sweat glistened perfectly off his body. I followed his perfect abs down and couldn’t help but notice the perfect V cut going into his gym shorts. Laura’s voice broke me out of the trance I was in. “Well, Kailee and Luke, it’s been a long night. We are going to leave the two of you to talk to each other but we’ll be back in the morning to help piece this puzzle together.” Francisco said goodnight and waved as they started walking away.
“Shall we” asked Luke, motioning to the house. We walked up the stairs and into the giant foyer again. I wondered if I would ever get used to this feeling or if I would always think I was dreaming. As we walked into Luke’s office, I rubbed my temples to quiet my headache. It had been pounding on and off all night long. I remembered that I had left my medicine at the Reynolds house. “Luke, do you think I could get my things from the Reynold’s tomorrow? I don’t have many things, but I didn’t bring any clothes with me.” “I can take you shopping tomorrow,” Luke said. I quietly replied with my eyes down “Thank you, but I don’t have a lot of money saved up right now and I also left my medicine there.” Luke placed a finger under my chin and raised my head so I would be looking at him “From here on, for the rest of your life, you do not have to worry about money. My money is your money, it always has been, it’s just been waiting to find out who it belongs to. You’ll have a credit card in your name tomorrow” he said.
I didn’t exactly know what to say “I’m not sure how to respond, this all seems so unreal to me. It’s like a fairytale but I’m scared it will be taken away from me just as quickly as it started,” Luke understood my reservations. “We’ll go to the Reynolds tomorrow morning,” he said, and I smiled. “I would like to know more about the medicine you take” he inquired. I hoped this question wouldn’t be asked for a while, but I knew I needed to be honest. As the words came out of my mouth, I worried he would reject me with all of the baggage I brought.
