5. LUKE

-LUKE- Kailee was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She had long brown hair, hazel eyes, and curves in all the right places. As soon as I locked eyes with her in the diner, something in me clicked. I thought she felt it also, but then she walked away. I needed to find out who she was. Our waitress was friendly and talkative and my beta, Kyle, was deep in conversation with her. My wolf, Zane, was howling in my head. “Go get our mate you i***t”, Zane yelled. “Something is definitely wrong and I don’t want to scare her” I tried to calm him but he just growled at me and went to the back of my mind to pout. The waitress sat us at a table and took our drink order. Once she walked away, I leaned into the table and told Kyle about my mate being here but something was up. Her smell wasn’t as strong as I thought it should have been and she was able to walk away with ease. A little later, our waitress delivered our food and then the check. She started talking to Kyle again but I was busy looking for my mate. As we left, I linked my gamma, Andy, and told him what was going on. I wanted security to look into my mate and bring me all the information about her. They would also need to begin watching the diner and making sure she was safe until I could figure out what was going on. We left and headed back to the packhouse. On the way back, Kyle said he had a big favor to ask of me. He made plans to go out with the waitress that night and wanted me to come. Kyle has been my best friend since we were little, since his dad was my dad’s beta. I could trust Kyle to both defend me to the death and tell me when I’m being an egghead. I rolled my eyes slightly and told him “I’ll do this for you tonight and then tomorrow we don’t stop till the Luna is home”. I was happy he agreed. We were getting ready to leave to pick up the girls. I grabbed my laptop as I figured I’d get some work done when we watched the movie tonight. We pulled onto their street but all I could think about was my mate and that I should have listened to Zane for once. As we pulled up, my heart jumped and Zane howled in my head, my mate was our waitress's friend! Kyle backhanded my chest with a slight laugh “You owe me so big time after this”. He was right, I did owe him and I didn’t mind telling him that. We got out of the car and did our introductions. I could tell she was nervous. “Just pick her up, put her in the car, and get her to the packhouse,” Zane said. “So you want me to kidnap her? I’m sure she’ll feel really good about that. Who’s the i***t now?” I scolded him. I opened the door for her and she got in. We drove to the bazaar attempting to make small talk, trying to help her feel more comfortable. Meghan and Kyle had no problems getting to know each other in the back seat, they never shut up. I was relieved that Kailee offered to order our tickets for us. When she had to repeat herself for the second time, I almost offered to repeat the order if she told it to me but instead, the best possible outcome happened. She unbuckled and leaned herself out my window. She smelled so good and it took everything I had not to put my nose at the nape of her neck to breathe in her scent. Every place that her body touched me tingled and I wondered if she was feeling the same thing. She finished placing the order and began to go back, but on her way, we locked eyes and I knew she felt something. “Kiss her”, Zane screamed, but a car horn broke our stare and she returned to her seat. We got our tickets and Kailee pulled money from her purse but she read my look and put it away quickly. As we parked, I linked Kyle that we would join them after we talked. So they exited the car without a word. After our conversation, I realized Kailee really didn’t know what was going on. I was not sure how because, as a wolf, she should have had her first shift at 18. Something was strange, but I couldn’t figure it out alone. I asked Kailee if I could show her everything I needed to instead of trying to explain it and she agreed. I linked Kyle again and let him know that Andy would drop a car off for him later that evening and then I drove off to make our way to the packhouse. As we entered our territory, I linked my parents and told them I needed their help, and asked them to meet me. My parents were an exceptional, Alpha and Luna, and even better parents. If anyone could help Kailee, I knew it would be them. Further onto our packland, our patrol were running beside our car. They were far enough not to startle Kailee, but with wolf sight, I knew she must have seen one. I reassured her she was safe. We came up to the packhouse where my parents were waiting. I made the introduction and I could tell my parents were trying to hold in their excitement for us all. I asked if we could go to my office and, of course, my parents obliged. I followed my father in and watched as Kailee take in the foyer. From the car ride and now this, I made the assumption that she had not grown up in the same lifestyle as I had. It made me want to learn about her past even more. Inside the office, I linked my parents. “Thank you for helping me.” My father linked back. “Of course, son. We would do anything to help you.” I saw Kailee look at me questionably and told her “I was just filling my parents in. Mother, Father, Kailee is my mate but her scent is not very strong. When I asked what pack she was in she didn’t know what I was talking about and I thought you both could help me explain.” My mother was an amazing Luna and could make anyone feel comfortable. She had spent years taking care of our pack and mothering everyone she could. My mother sat at the edge of the couch with both hands on her knees. She had the slightest smile on her face and looked at Kailee in the eyes. After a moment, Kailee told us about her past. My father immediately linked me “That’s strange. A wolf would never abandon their pup like that. We need to find out who her parents are.” Kailee tried leaving thinking we’d be disappointed, but the only disappointment I felt was with her parents for abandoning her and all the people who failed her ever since. I practically begged her to stay. I needed her here with me and now that she was here, I couldn’t let her leave. “We know this must be a lot to hear sweetheart, and we want you to be as comfortable as possible. No matter what your story is, we are so happy you’re here now and you’re safe” my mother tried to reassure her as they hugged. “This poor pup has been through a lot. It will take time but she’ll be a great Luna one day” my mother linked me. Throughout the night we explained a lot about our lives and what happens within the pack. We asked about Kailee’s life and she told us she had been in and out of homes her entire life and about her headaches. My phone rang and it was Meghan looking for Kailee. She asked where Kailee was and said their landlords, Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds, were mad she was out so late. I could feel Zane fighting to take over. I calmly told Meghan “you let the Reynolds know that she is safe and she will not be returning. She is no longer their concern!” and I hung up. I don’t know who these people thought they were trying to control, but that wouldn’t be happening with my mate any longer. Kailee was worried about a contract she had signed and having to owe the Reynolds money. After assuring her I’d handle it, we walked back to the couches and I linked my father “Get our attorneys on the contract and if it’s legal, pay them out right”, to which he agreed. Kailee asked me about Zane. “Ahhh she wants to know about me now. Tell her I’ll take her to the bedroom and she’ll learn all about me there!” Zane sounded off in my head. I didn’t tell her he was a horn dog, or a wanna-be comedian, but she’d find that out soon enough. “Would you like to see him?” I asked and she did. “Zane, do not screw this up, you knit whit or you will never get to run again”, I threatened him. We all went outside and gathered around. “Ready to meet Zane?” I asked and then shifted. To my surprise, Zane was calm and charming. Kailee silently brushed her hand over my fur, sending the same shock waves through me. Zane knelt down and she climbed on his back. Once my father gave her instructions, Zane ran slowly and once we felt her relax, he sped up. He did that on purpose because it made her cling to him to hold on. When we got back to the packhouse, Kailee got off and I shifted back to my human form and threw on my gym shorts. As I exited the tall grass, I could see Kailee staring at me. I trained a lot, every single day and my muscles showed that. My parents left for the evening but promised they’d be back in the morning. “Shall we?” I asked, motioning to the house. As we walked into my office, Kailee turned to me and asked to pick up her items tomorrow. The thought of having her return to that house made me want to taste blood. I can buy everything she needs, there’s no reason for her to ever go back. I should have explained myself better but instead, she was embarrassed and told me she didn’t have money and needed her medicine. I placed a finger under her chin and raised her head so she couldn’t miss the sincerity in my eyes I explained to her that she didn’t have to worry about money again and we’d go to the Reynolds in the morning. I have a few things I’d like to tell them anyway. “I would like to know more about the medicine you take” I questioned. I have never heard of a wolf having to take medicine, so I was curious about what this human doctor thought was wrong with my mate. How could anyone think there was something wrong with my mate?
