BEGINNING
Life its not easy, life is hard... Sometimes too hard.
My name is California... Yeah I know. What were my parents thinking of? But anyways that's the only name I've got and this is my story.
Let me take you back in time, tight back when I was just sixteen years old and I was still happy before they came.
My father owned a farmland in a small village of Clarksburg, Michigan, it was me, my father and my little sister Rome... Yeah once again, I know!
Mom died when Ro was only two and we had to learn how to live without her, our parents named us after the places they loved the most and would like to visit at least once, but unfortunately they couldn't.
My father was the best, he always made sure that even though we needed a mother we didn't felt like it. He was an honest, hard working man and we were proud of him.
Our pain started when they knocked on our door in a silent evening. Rome and I were doing our homeworks while dad was reading a book, as soon as we finished our school work we would have dinner.
_I'll open_ I said automatically running to the door.
Our antagonists looked presentable, friendly and expensive, yes... They looked like they came out of a magazine. There were two men standing in our porch. Both of them had dark hair, but one had piercing blue eyes and the other one brown ones, they were tall and handsome.
_Yes?_ I asked shy_ May I help you?
_Yes_ the one with brown eyes said_ We would like to talk with the owner of the house_ he talked trying to sound calm.
_Dad!_ I turned around to call my father and when I looked back they were staring at me with darkness in their eyes so I left as soon as my father reached the door.
My father talked to them for about three minutes as I went back to my studies.
_Girls we'll have guests for dinner_ they entered the house following my dad surprising us_ Sit down please, these are my daughters Cali and Ro_ dad pointed us.
_What does Cali and Ro stand for?_ the blue eyed one asked intrigued.
_California and Rome_ dad smiled embarrassed_ I know, I know... Odd names for farm girls.
_California_ my name dance around the dark eyed one lips_ That's a beautiful name, it matches the owner_ he said looking at me and I only deviated the look.
_Dont be rude Cali, thank the Mister!_ dad said innocent.
_Thank you_ I said shy looking at my books before closing them and head to the kitchen, I was always the one who made dinner. Mom died when Ro was two and I was eleven, and since I turned fourteen I started learning to cook with my dad and the help of a few books. Some people might say it's too early or dangerous but I had to.
Our land was located far from the city and we didn't had nearby neighbors, sometimes dad came home extremely tired of working on our cornfield and traveling to the nearest town to sell it, he deserved to find a hot plate of food on his table when he got home, he was an amazing father, the best we could have indeed, but maybe he was too good.
A couple minutes later I was still in the kitchen serving the chicken in a big platter for our guests and felt a presence behind me, when I turned my body bumped into another one.
_Oh I'm so sorry Cali!_ the dark eyed said_ I just came for a cup of water, didn't meant to disturb you.
_It's okay, Ro go get a cup of water_ I ordered my baby sister.
_Wow she is very smart for her age_ he smiled at her receiving the cup_ Thank you darling_ his smile was so creepy_ My name is Donovan, but everybody calls me Don, my cousin is Saul!
_You are cousins?_ I asked quietly_ You look like brothers.
_Our fathers are brothers, I guess that's why.
_I need to serve the table, excuse me_ I moved far from him and place all the food on the table before calling everybody.
The food was good, I know it not from the way they attacked the chicken and the potatoes but because I know I'm a good cook. Donovan felt free to grab the meat with his hands and eat it slowly while staring at me.
_Mister Clark, thank you so much for this delicious meal_ Saul said cleaning his mouth_ But we came here to talk about business not to introduce ourselves to the neighbors.
My father's face changed into a serious one he didn't use too often.
_Cali take Ro upstairs and stay in your room_ I obeyed or tried to. I wanted to know what were they talking about, what kind of business was that. So I left Ro playing in our room and tried to hear the most I could.
_I'll go straight to the point Mister Clark, we want to buy your land_ Saul said crossing his arms.
_What?_ dad stood up_ My land it's not for sale. Who told you I'm selling my place?
_We know you are not selling it right now Mr Clark but everything has a price and we want these lands_ Donovan explained coldly_ And when we want something, we get it.
_You know what?_ I never saw my dad so upset_ Please leave my house right now, I grew up here, my wife is buried in this land... I am not selling!
_We'll leave Mr Clark, but I know you'll think about our offer_ Saul finished.
_We'll leave for now, but remember we always get what we want, one way or another_ I heard those words from Donovan and instantly felt a cold wind on my n eck. I think it was God warning me.
