Chapter 2

1730 Words
I waited for hours for Kade’s reply. I prayed that somehow this misunderstanding would clear up and if this was a nightmare, I’d wake up from it. We were happy yesterday, the other day, the day after that, and… and… I wiped yet another stray tear from my cheeks. The sun was already setting, coloring the sky with light orange hues. Kade’s words rang in my ears that he would put me behind bars if he came back home and I still had not left this house—our home that we built for years. I did not want to believe he could actually do that. Not when I knew better than anyone how much he loved me and how much I loved him. I thought I could no longer cry, but tears still blurred my vision as I entered my walk-in closet. Kade’s scent lingered, that comforting woody scent mixed with a masculine scent that smelled like no one else’s but him and him alone. My heart tightened as I opened the last drawer at the corner of the room. My old things were there. The pair of clothes I bought just to have a more decent casual wear when Kade and I dated. I remembered how insecure I felt given how different we were in status, but Kade reassured me. The first pair of white shoes I bought when I finally got my first paycheck at work when I still did not know Kade reminded me the little things that made me happy—It did not change until now. They held sentimental value so I did not have the heart to throw them away… Who would have thought that I’d be using them again today? I scanned the room once more. It was filled with expensive clothing which was mostly tailored only for my husband and I, bags, and jewelry. They were all bought with Kade’s money since I stopped working when we got married so everything else in this room was his, technically. If I even took a single piece from this room, it made me feel that I was confirming Kade’s accusation of me being a thief... of being a gold digger. It gripped my chest. Being a gold digger was one of the reasons his family refused to acknowledge me since the think I married Kade because of his wealth. That was not true at all. I grabbed my old clothes, bag, and shoes before preparing to leave the house that I once called home. I had no idea why and how this was happening, but my instinct told me that I had to leave before Kade came home. When I was ready to leave, I still stayed in our bedroom staring at my phone, hoping he would listen to my voicemail and change his mind. I love him. Betrayal and disloyalty were the things I’d never do no matter what. Not when I loved him with all of me and he accepted me for who I was. However, no texts. No calls. No voicemails either. “Hun…” I whispered. My thumb pressed on the dial button. For the first try, the phone rang but it remained unanswered. I tried again, not wanting to give up on us that easily. “The number you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time,” the mechanical voice stated. I stared at my phone before dialing again… That cannot be, right? I mean… “The number you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time,” the mechanical voice stated again. That only meant… Kade blocked me. Sobs after sobs left my lips. Pain gnawed at me as if chipping a part of me little by little and it terrified me. What went wrong? Did I do something? But I never truly signed anything. I may have not studied in college, but I knew better than to sign anything. So how was this happening to me? “Hun…” I whimpered. “I did not steal anything.” The ticking of the clock became louder as if reminding me of the few minutes I had left before I had to leave. With a broken and heavy heart, I removed my sim card from my phone and transferred it to my old phone since the new one had been bought by Kade even before he proposed. It was expensive and even though I loved it, I cannot being myself to bring it with me. It was not my money that bought it so I had no right to take it. I placed it on the drawer of the side table near our bed. My feet felt like heavy lead. My heart screamed to still wait for Kade and talk it out, however, fear was consuming me. I knew better than anyone else that when Levanti Motors was involved, he would spare no one. The ride away from home was quiet. Too quiet. The thumping of my heart became louder. More agitated. Scared. I had no idea where to go next after this, but for sure, I had to speak with Kade no matter what. The cab stopped in front of Kade’s company. I paid and immediately ran out, rushing to the elevator with the hopes to see my husband. The earlier we clear things out, the better. However, even before reaching the elevator, a security guard stepped in my way. “A visitor?” he asked. “Y-Yes.” “Then, please head to the reception desk first.” Reluctant, I eyed the elevator again. Yet the security guard looked like he would not let me through unless I do what he says. So I approached the reception desk and told the clerk that I was visiting someone. “May I know the name and position?” the clerk questioned. “Uhmm… Kade Storm,” I replied. “Do you have an appointment?” I shook my head. She flashed an immediate smile. “You need an appointment to meet Mr. Storm, miss.” “Can you call him and say that Reyna Clave is here to see him? He knows me.” She eyed me from head to toe. The slight rise of her brow was enough hint for me of what she might be thinking—a person like me would never meet as someone as important as Kade. I merely pushed down that thought. “I’m sorry, miss, but you have to make an appointment first," she said with her usual business smile and tone of voice. It was not surprising that the majority of the workers here did not know me since my marriage with Kade had been private, which I agreed on since I did not want the attention from other people. I looked around and saw the emergency exit—the stairs. My gaze landed on the security guard and he was preoccupied with someone, probably a client. The reception clerk had her hands full as well with a group seemingly in a hurry. I did not rush and casually walked towards the emergency exit while keeping an eye around me to make sure no on was looking. I immediately rushed in the moment only a few steps away separated me from it before running up to the first floor. After two flights of stairs, I exited the emergency exit and looked for the elevators. If I was not mistaken, Kade’s office was on the 23rd floor so I pressed the 23 button. The ride up felt like hours yet too short to even calm my nerves. The moment I stepped out of the elevator, curious eyes landed on me. Probably because I was new in that area and maybe due to my choice of clothing—a simple white top and black pants. Or maybe because of how I looked different from them. I felt insecure with my white complexion… Everything about me was white—my hair, my eyelids, my eyebrows, my skin. And to top it all off, my eyes differ in color as if I was made to become a spectacle in the eyes of the world. I lowered my head before approaching a young woman dressed in a semi-formal attire. “Excuse me… Do you know where Kade Storm’s office is?” I asked in an almost hushed tone. She looked at me with a raised eyebrow, more obvious than the receptionist. Her eyes scanned me from head to toe before meeting my gaze. Compared to her seemingly flawless beauty, I'd understand if she thought how pathetic I looked right next to her. Before she could even give me an answer, I heard my husband’s voice from a distance so I immediately turned and there he was—walking and speaking with another man seemingly younger than him. I turned away from the young woman and heard her calling out to me, but I chose to ignore her. “Hun…” I called as I slowly approached my husband. He stopped for a moment before grabbing my arm tight and forcing me inside a room. When he let go of me, a pang of pain pierced my chest as a red handprint was left on my arm. Kade made sure he’d never do something like this before, but now… He started to become a person totally different from the man I married. “Why are you here?” he asked, his tone sharp and cold. “I came to explain… Please, hear me out–” “There is nothing to explain. Every piece of evidence points right at you so save your lies and leave before I run out of patience.” “But I did not sign anything. Hun… We have been together for years now–” “And now I finally see who you truly are." He scoffed. "You have my praise for making me believe you were such a good person until today. Now, leave. Reyna… Get the f**k out of here.” “Hun..." I reached out to him, but he took several steps back, avoiding me like a plague. I tried for the second time, but he kept the distance between us before he grabbed his phone and called someone. “An intruder is here in my office. Deal with it…”
