Chapter 1
My husband, Kade Storm, never raised his voice on me until this very moment.
“Reyna!”
He also never once called me by my name ever since we started dating up until now. I could not help but wonder what changed today.
His voice, laced with obvious rage, rattled me while I was cooking in the kitchen. I turned off the stove and rushed to the living room where I could hear his footsteps.
Knowing him, he would not be shouting without any valid reason. Hence, it worried me of what might have gone wrong at work. I just also hoped that it had nothing to do with his family since his mother still had not accepted me as her daughter-in-law and she made that as clear as the blue sky in the middle of the day.
And when it came about his family, there was little I could do to help him since they gave me no chances at all to prove to them that I deserved Kade's affection.
“Hun, what’s wrong?” I asked, taken aback when he stared at me with an icy glare.
“You f*****g traitor.”
Kade strode close and suddenly gripped my arm so tight I cannot help but wince in pain.
But that was not the most painful part. It was how he spoke with me and called me a traitor. His jaw was clenched and I could tell from his tone of voice that he was holding back. At that moment, he seemed to have gone so far I could not reach his usual gentle self.
“W-What do you mean? What happened?”
My voice was still calm since I did not want to reciprocate his already raging emotions. And I could not understand a thing he was saying. Not to mention, the last thing I wanted was for us to argue over something I could not understand. What I also did not expect was him pushing me away causing me to fall on the ground as if I disgusted him. He then threw several papers right on my face before letting out a curse under his breath.
“One question, one answer. Are those your signatures?” he asked, tone clipped and firm.
I did not answer immediately. My chest tightened as I picked up each document from the floor as his sharp glare was still on me. My eyes scanned what the documents were about and on several pages, my signature was fixed. For some reason, the hair behind my back stood at their ends as it felt like a bucket of cold water poured all over me.
It was an agreement ending the contract between Levanti Motors and Helixon Systems, a machinery and equipment provider company, that had produced quality equipment for the manufacturing of the new car designs of Levanti, the very company that my husband managed which he and his family owned.
I double checked... triple check even just to make sure if these were my signatures, but... They were. How was this even possible?
“Yes… This is my signature, but I never once signed these d-documents,” I muttered, my voice breaking upon seeing the amount released by Levanti Motors—a billion dollars.
That amount was surely something I could never hold even if I was married to one of the top wealthiest businessman in the world.
As I tried to process what I just read, Kade gripped my jaw and forced me to look him straight in the eyes.
“Helixon never received the amount so it is good news that the contract has been void. However, that one billion dollars is missing. Where is it?”
Tears blurred my vision. His tone, his gaze, and his words told me that he was not giving me even a tiny bit of benefit of the doubt. He was so fixed that I stole from him.
Still… I shook my head.
“I do not have it, Hun. I have no idea where it is…” A sob left my lips. “P-Please… Believe m-me…”
He let go of me and ran his hands over his face. A smirk tugged at his lips before a chuckle left his mouth.
“Reyna… You know you can ask me for any amount of money, right?”
I nodded, still on the floor as my legs felt like heavy lead. The mark his grip left on my arm remained red, but that was not important as of the moment.
Not when I hear something slowly breaking. I was not even sure if it was my heart or my husband's trust. Worse... There seemed to be nothing else I could do to stop it.
“Then, why the f**k did you steal from the company?” he shouted, his voice filling every corner of the house.
I flinched. A flicker of worry crossed his eyes, but it immediately vanished that it made me doubt myself if it was real... Or it might just be me assuming things. But I prayed it was real because then... Kade still cared about me.
“No… H-Hun…” I pleaded after composing mysslf. “I… I did not steal a-anything.”
“Then, explain the f*****g signatures!”
“I did not sign them.” I forced myself to stand and approached him.
He held the bridge of his nose. Silence prevailed yet the atmosphere was too heavy… too tense… I feared that if I said a single word, it would spark another fit of rage from my husband.
I held his hands, but he immediately swatted my hands away and took several steps back.
“I swear, Hun… I would never steal from you,” I said after wiping away the tears that managed to escape. “You know me… For the past few years, I never stole a single penny. I never thought or even considered doing it.”
“Your fingerprint is all over the documents before they reached me. Do you know that? I would have believed you if those fingerprints weren’t there, but… f**k!”
My mind was under a short circuit. I had a lot of questions and I needed answers… I wanted to speak… to explain myself but it seemed to only worsen the situation.
Kade turned to me. The warmth in his eyes was long gone. Hatred burned in them for something I never even did.
“Leave.”
My eyes widened. My body stilled at that one word.
“W-What?”
“I want you to leave the f*****g house before I get back home tonight.” He took long strides to tower over me before gripping my jaw once more with just one hand. “If I find you still in this house, you will pay me double the amount you stole or f*****g rot in jail.”
His words felt like a decree. Final and irrevocable. This time, my body trembled at the ultimatum he gave me.
“You can keep the money and shove it into your mouth to your heart’s content, but expect no alimony on our divorce. Do you understand that, gold digger?”
"D-Divorce?"
He chuckled. It was not out of amusement, but rather... It sounded dark and mocking.
"Why? Do you think I will forgive you because of love?" He took a step closer. "Of course not because you only proved how unworthy you are of it."
My body ran cold as his words cut through me like a thousand knives over and over again. Never in my life did I ever expect him to say such things. This accusation, his anger, his piercing words.
They started to torment me.
The moment his hand left my skin, my knees gave up on me. I wanted to speak… I wanted to beg my husband to believe me, but there seemed to be a large lump in my throat that stopped me from uttering a single word.
Kade turned his back on me and headed to the door without stopping to even glance my way. He was not wavering and it scared me. I wanted to scream his name. I desperately wanted to stand and run after him, but my body refused to cooperate. Only my tears continued to roll down my cheeks.
What went wrong? What happened? Why was this happening? Did I do something wrong? But I never signed anything before so why?
When I managed to get back control over my body, I immediately stood and rushed outside.
“Hun!" I yelled with the hope that he was still here. “Hun!"
I opened the door, only to lose my footing.
“Ah!”
I winced at the feeling of my knee being skinned after tripping against the ground the moment I stepped out of the house. It stung. But a scraped knee was nothing compared to what was happening. Even then, I stood back and rushed to the garage, only to find no sign of my husband.
He was already gone.
My hand immediately reached into my pocket for my phone and dialed my husband’s number. I bit my lower lip when it went straight to voicemail.
“Please... Pick it up.
I dialed his number over and over again, but nothing changed.
"Hun... Please, answer me. Listen to me... I am telling the truth."
I let myself fall on the ground. My shoulders shook as sobs after sobs left me. What if Kade truly divorces me? What if... What if we'd truly broken apart? Just thinking about it hurt me.
That would be a totally different nightmare. Kade was my whole world. He was my only family left and I cannot bear it if even he would leave my side.
I shook my head to clear my mind of such negative thoughts.
There was no other choice, but to leave a voicemail.
“Hun… Please, I have no idea how my fingerprints and signature were on those documents, but please believe me… I never signed anything. I would never steal from you. I would never betray your trust and love because I…” My voice broke… “Because I love you. Please… L-Let’s talk.”
