"But I am innocent!" Edwin cried out. "I've told you the truth, and yet you won't believe me. You are condemning me without giving me a fair chance to defend myself!"
"You have been given every opportunity to defend yourself," Dominic said, his voice cold and hard. "But your story has too many inconsistencies. It is clear that you are lying."
Edwin looked down at his hands, his heart sinking. He knew he was telling the truth, but he couldn't seem to convince anyone else.
"You seem truly distraught," Dominic said, his tone softening slightly. "I believe that you believe what you are saying. But there is too much evidence to the contrary. There is no way to prove your innocence. I'm sorry, but I cannot in good conscience release you."
