Chapter1
New York City glittered like a lie. From the floor-to-ceiling windows of the ballroom, the skyline stretched endlessly—glass towers stabbing into the night sky while golden lights shimmered like promises that no one intended to keep. Ruby Monroe had spent three hours making sure the illusion looked perfect. Crystal chandeliers hung low enough to catch the glow of the candles. White orchids curled elegantly across the long marble tables. The champagne tower sparkled beneath the soft lights like liquid diamonds. Perfection. That was what wealthy people paid for. Not happiness. Just the appearance of it. Ruby adjusted a ribbon on the centerpiece and stepped back, analyzing the symmetry. Her eyes were sharp, calculating trained after years in the wedding industry to notice even the smallest flaw. “Miss Monroe,” one of the assistants whispered nervously. “The Laurent party has arrived.” Ruby exhaled slowly. Of course they had. The Laurent name carried the kind of weight that bent rooms around it. Media titan. Billionaire dynasty. The kind of family that owned companies, politicians, and sometimes entire narratives. Ruby had planned events for politicians, CEOs, even celebrities. But the Laurents? They were different. Dangerous. She turned just as the ballroom doors opened. Conversations dropped to hushed murmurs. Cameras flashed. And then he walked in. Kevin Laurent. Ruby recognized him instantly, even though she’d only seen him in headlines years ago. Disgraced Laurent heir accused of insider fraud. The family distances itself from scandal. But the man walking into the ballroom tonight didn’t look disgraced. Rather he owned it He looked lethal. Tall, easily six-three, with dark hair swept carelessly back and a jaw sharp enough to cut glass. His black suit fit like it had been sewn directly onto his body, every line precise and expensive. Yet it wasn’t his appearance that froze the room. It was his presence. Cold. Controlled. Predatory. His gaze moved across the ballroom like a blade, evaluating everything with detached precision. Then his eyes landed on Ruby. For a second, something shifted. Recognition? No. Something stranger. Ruby didn’t look away. Most people did when Kevin Laurent looked at them. It was instinctive, like stepping back from the edge of a cliff. But Ruby Monroe had fallen off cliffs before. She wasn’t afraid of heights anymore. Kevin’s brow twitched almost imperceptibly. Interesting. She turned away first, returning to the bar station as if he were nothing more than another guest. That was when he walked toward her. The room parted automatically. Power moved like that. Ruby finished adjusting a row of champagne flutes when a deep voice spoke behind her. “You’re the planner.” Not a question. Ruby turned slowly. Up close, Kevin Laurent looked even more dangerous. His eyes were dark, unreadable, and disturbingly calm like the surface of deep water hiding something massive beneath it. “Yes,” she replied evenly. “Ruby Monroe.” His gaze lingered on her face. Longer than necessary. It wasn’t admiration. It was an analysis. “Georgia accent,” he said. Ruby stiffened slightly. “I lost most of it.” “You didn’t answer my question.” “You didn’t ask one.” For a moment, silence hung between them. Then unexpectedly Kevin’s mouth curved slightly. Not a smile. Something colder. “You’re not intimidated by the Laurent name.” Ruby picked up a tray of champagne glasses and placed them neatly onto the bar. “I plan events for rich people,” she said calmly. “Not worship them.” A faint murmur rippled through the staff nearby. Nobody talked to a Laurent like that. Kevin’s gaze sharpened. “You’re either brave,” he said quietly, “or reckless.” Ruby met his eyes without blinking. “I’m employed.” Something flickered in his expression. Amusement. And something darker. For a brief moment, his gaze softened—almost imperceptibly—as if he were seeing something else layered over her face. Someone else. Then it vanished. “What’s your role tonight?” he asked. “Making sure your family’s gala doesn’t collapse into chaos.” Kevin glanced around the ballroom. “Everything looks… immaculate.” Ruby tilted her head. “Is that a compliment?” “It’s an observation.” Typical billionaire response. Ruby turned back to the staff, signaling them to prepare for the next wave of guests. When she faced him again, Kevin was still studying her. Too closely. “Is there something else?” she asked. “Yes.” He paused. Then said something that made her stomach drop. “You remind me of someone.” Ruby forced herself not to react. She’d heard lines like that before. From men who thought nostalgia was romantic. “Someone important?” she asked flatly. Kevin’s eyes darkened. “Someone dead.” The words landed like ice. Ruby felt a shiver crawl down her spine. “Then I suggest,” she said quietly, “you stop looking for ghosts.” For the first time, Kevin Laurent looked genuinely surprised. Then he leaned closer. Just enough for only her to hear. “I never stop looking for ghosts,” he murmured. His phone vibrated in his hand. Kevin glanced at the screen. His expression hardened instantly. Business mode. Without another word, he turned and walked toward the VIP section where the rest of the Laurent family waited. Ruby watched him go. Something about that man was wrong. Not arrogant. Not cruel. Just… broken. And dangerous. Very dangerous. Across the ballroom, Kevin reached the table where his brothers were waiting. Lucien Laurent raised a glass lazily. “Well,” he drawled, “look who crawled out of exile.” Marcel didn’t bother hiding his disdain. Kevin sat down calmly. “I was invited.” Lucien smirked. “By Father.” The tension at the table tightened. Across the room, cameras flashed as Jacques Laurent entered the gala like a king greeting his court. The Laurent patriarch smiled warmly for the cameras. The public loved him. They didn’t see the cruelty beneath it. Kevin’s gaze lingered on his father. Five years ago, Jacques Laurent had destroyed him. Tonight? Kevin intended to destroy the Laurent empire. Quietly. Patiently. He picked up a champagne glass and glanced across the ballroom. Ruby Monroe was speaking with a guest now, her expression composed and distant. But Kevin couldn’t shake the feeling that he had seen that face before. Not just similar. Identical. His fingers tightened around the glass. Celeste. The ghost of his past stared back at him from across the room. And this time Kevin Laurent refused to let her disappear again.
