Chapter 1
POV Liv - September 6
I hear my dad yell and my mom scream and then everything goes black...
My eyes open and I scream! I look around, being confused of where I am for a couple seconds. But then I realise, it was just a nightmare. It’s the same nightmare that haunts me since the death of my parents. I survived the car crash, but my parents did not. Since then, a lot has happened and today is going to be my first day at a new school...
I grab my phone from the nightstand and check the time. Great! It’s not even 6 AM! Knowing I won’t be able to go back to sleep I swing my legs over the edge and walk towards the bathroom to get myself ready for school.
A few hours later I walk into the school not really paying attention to my surroundings and bump into someone. “I’m so sorry, I should’ve been looking where I was going’ I say when I hit the ground. “Don’t worry, it’s okay” I hear the person I bumped into say. I get back onto my feet and help the other girl up. She looks at me with a questioning look in her eyes. “I haven’t seen you before, are you new to this school?” she asks. I nod “yes, I’m Olivia, but you can call me Liv” The girl looks at me and then realisation appears on her face “O yeah! I should’ve known. I am supposed to guide you around. My name is Meghan”
I smile at her words “thank god I really thought I was going to get lost in this building” I say while my face becomes red. Meghan giggles and wraps an arm around my shoulder “no way that’s going to happen, because I am here” she says while shaking her head. The principle already gave me your timetable and your locker combination. The only thing that’s left on our to-do list is picking up your books at the library” she explains. I look at her trying to process all the things she just said. “So, we’re going to the library first?” I ask her. She shakes her head “no, we can do that after Math. We’ve got a free period then, so a lot more time to get those books of yours!”
“Hold on” I say confused “are we in the same classes?” She screams excitedly while jumping up and down “you are placed in the exact same classes as me. So even if you would want, you won’t be able to get rid of me” I laugh at her words. I just met her, but I already like her. Her enthusiasm makes me forget all the pain the past few months have caused me.
At the end of the day, I walk out of the school exhausted. Don’t get me wrong, everyone is being very kind to me, and Meghan has become a very good friend. But I can’t count the number of times I had to explain everything that has happened since my parents died. And it’s just a very emotional topic to talk about. So quickly make my way back home. Luckily the apartment my aunt got me is not that far from school. And as soon as I land on the couch my eyes close, and I fall asleep.
The next day at school goes by very fast. And before I realise me and Meghan are heading to Biology, our last class of the day. We sit down in the back of the classroom waiting for the teacher to arrive. “Liv?” I hear Meghan whisper next to me. I turn my head in her direction “something wrong?” I ask her. “No” she says, still keeping her voice low “I just want to give you a heads up. Mr Adams can be really strict.” Right after the words come out of her mouth our teacher, Mr Adams, walks into the classroom. The heads of all the students present, snap up in his direction.
“Ms Sinclair!” he yells “is that how you speak about your teachers?” I look at Meghan “who is he talking to?” I ask her while trying to keep my voice as low as possible. But the teacher must have heard because now he starts talking to me. “Young lady, you must be Olivia. Please do not speak in my class, unless I ask you to” he says, and I nod my head confused how he could’ve heard me whisper from where he is standing. I’m even more confused when Meghan starts speaking “I’m sorry Mr Adams, I just wanted to explain your rules to Olivia.” Then I realise Meghan’s last name must me Sinclair, because the teacher nods and says “Well, alright then. Let’s get started, shall we?”
Right before the buzzer gives us the signal to go home, the door opens, and two boys enter the classroom. Looking around the room I see everyone’s head bowing down and I am, again, confused. Looking at the intruders I notice they look exactly like each other. I realise one of them is staring at me and when I look into his eyes, they seem to darken a little and he takes a deep breath. He grabs the arm of his twin brother, and both immediately leave the room. The door slamming shut behind them.
