POV Olivia - September 8
Hearing the sound of my alarm, I am quick to find my way to the snooze button trying to get another five minutes of sleep. Then, when my alarm goes for the second time, I swing my legs over the edge of my bed and make my way to the bathroom.
Hopping in the shower I quickly wash my hair and body, get dressed and last but not least I brush my teeth. When I exit the bathroom, I get my phone and my bag and walk into the Livingroom. I check the time and I am surprised when I see I still got ten minutes left. I try to relax on the couch, but my mind keeps wandering to the twins I saw yesterday. Will I see them again? I don’t know why but for some reason I feel a certain pull towards them.
I decide it’s useless to stay on the couch when I can’t find my rest and make my way to the front door of the apartment. Once outside, I head towards school.
After a very long day Meghan and I leave the school while bickering over what movie we’re going to watch. “I don’t really care, as long as it’s no horror. Otherwise, I won’t be able to sleep” I admit to her. She giggles “alright, I won’t pick a horror movie” she promises. “Actually, where do you live? Are we going to walk there” I ask her when it comes to my mind that I have no idea where she lives. She shakes her head “my brother should be here any minute, he promised to pick us up.”
At that very moment a large black truck with tinted windows enters the parking lot of the school. “There he is” Meghan says while she grabs my arm and pulls me towards the car. Meghan opens the door to reveal the back seat of the car. She motions for me to go in first. I take a couple of steps and then I freeze, my face turning white instantly. “What’s wrong?” Meghan asks when she sees me panicking. I look at her, I want to explain but I just can’t find the words. How do you explain that your terrified to get in a car? For sure, she will understand my fear. But I don’t think I’m ready yet.
Realisation appears on Meghan’s face. “Oh my god, Liv! I am so sorry! The principle told me what happened, I should’ve thought about it and ask you. We can walk if you want to, but that will take almost two hours.” I get myself together and shake my head, feeling relieved that I don’t have to explain myself. “I can do it but if you don’t mind, can I sit up front?” Meghan nods her head “of course!”
She opens the door for me. I get in the car, and close the door, while Meghan jumps in the back of the car. She takes a seat in the middle and leans forward, in between the two front seats. “Aiden, this is Olivia. Liv, this is my brother Aiden.” she introduces me to her brother. Aiden smiles and looks at me “it’s nice to meet you! Can I call you Liv, or do you prefer Olivia?” I smile at him “it’s nice to meet you too. You can call me Liv!”
After a 45-minute drive we arrive at a gate. Aiden waves at the two men standing in front of it. “Where are we?” I ask confused. “At the edge of our pack territory” Meghan answers. I turn around facing her “what do you mean pack territory?” Her face turns red as she shoots a glare in her brothers’ direction. I hear Aiden speak “we live in a gated-community” he says while shooting a warning look at his sister through the rear-view mirror. I nod as a signal I understand what he says, but I’m not quite sure if I believe his words.
A couple minutes later, Aiden parks the car in front of a modern white house. I haven’t had the chance to get out, when a woman walks towards me and practically pulls me out of the car. “You must be Olivia, she says excited “I’m Melissa, Meghan’s mom!” She doesn’t let go of my hand and leads me into the house. “Me and Daniel are leaving in a minute. But if you want, you’re more than welcome to stay the night. So, you don’t have to travel all the way back into town.”
I realise I haven’t even thought of that. The car ride here was almost 50 minutes long. I don’t have someone who can pick me up and bring me home and I also don’t want to ask someone here to bring me home. “That’s very nice of you” I smile at her “if Meghan doesn’t mind, I would love to stay the night.” “Oh, I don’t mind” I hear Meghan’s voice coming from behind me “I love a sleepover!” she wraps an arm around me and guides me to the Livingroom “you wait here, and I will get some snacks and drinks” she says to me and heads in the direction to what I assume is the kitchen.
A few moments later she walks back into the living room. I don’t know how she manages but she carries two bags of crisps, two bottles of soda and two glasses. She puts it all down on the coffee table and settles next to me on the couch. On that moment, some thoughts that I can’t seem to let go come back in my mind. And even though I don’t want to ask the words are coming out of my mouth before I realise.
“Meghan?” I ask hesitantly. She hums and looks at me, the question clear in her eyes. “I don’t know if it’s just me imagining stuff, but yesterday at school a couple of things happened that I believe are impossible.” “Like what?” she asks softly. “Well, you were whispering at me. And the biology teacher could here you from the other side of the classroom. Then those boys walked in and everyone in the room was quite and looking at the floor. Then you heard me during English class, when you came back from the bathroom. But you weren’t supposed to hear me from that distance. And today in the car, you mentioned territory. Your brother said gated community, but it looks a little different than that. I also haven’t seen other houses yet. I’m sorry if I sound crazy, but I just have this feeling there are a lot of things happening around me that I don’t know about. And I don’t mean to insult you, so please tell me if I’m wrong. But I have the feeling that you know exactly what’s going on. And please, explain it to me. Because I feel like I’m going insane!”
After I stop my rambling, I’m too scared to look Meghan in the eye and I turn my head in the opposite direction. “Liv?” I hear Meghan say softly “you’re not wrong!” I look at her surprised. She continues speaking “can I ask you something?” I nod “yeah, sure!”
She hesitates for a moment but then opens her mouth again and her words draw the colour of my face “what do you know about werewolves?” “Werewolves?” I ask her “like humans that turn into a wolf on every full moon?” She scoffs and shakes her head “no, not the full moon part. But yes, half human, half wolf” “I’ve seen a lot of movies about them” I reply to her. “But why are asking me what I know about them?”
Meghan takes a deep breath before she answers my question “because they exist! I, myself am one. And you’re on werewolf territory as we speak” I try to process what she just said. But before I can my body falls back on the couch, and everything turns black.
