The Dinner

Carys looked at Adith's dark mesmerizing eyes and asked “so what happened to your patient?”.

“ The patient's name is Bobby, he was admitted when he experienced a seizure , we gave the injections to stop his seizure and checked his brain through CT, the seizure had started in the temporal lobe but after sometime Bobby had a heart attack, we performed an angiogram for both heart and brain but it was clear, we couldn’t find the root cause of the seizure.

“ Hmmm… how about an MRI?” sure, we'll soon get it done and both of them observed the MRI of Bobby , “ Look at the meninges, observe the phrenic nerve, there is a clot, your first aid had saved his life, Adith nodded and smiled at Carys, “ so surgery is not necessary, meds will help him”

“Yeah” and both laughed and left the MRI, they walked down the hall in silence, both them were hungry

Adith asked “Carys had your lunch?”

“Not yet, have to type the report and grab something later” Carys said

“You can write your report later, let's go to the cafeteria”

Both of them grabbed their lunch and sat in a corner by a window.

It was a sunny afternoon, the breeze was warm, Carys took a bite of her food and looked out through the window.

Adith looked at her charming side profile of her face, he didn’t know from where to start, they never met after that crazy night.

Adith said “Carys I am sorry, after I finished college, I went to Ukraine along with my seniors to serve the people affected by the war, later I tried to contact you after I came to Florida, on that day I saw your engagement news online and you were pregnant. So, I thought it's not right to call you, we never promised each other but I couldn’t help myself falling for you, back then my love was true but I moved on” and he took a deep breath, and fiddled with his engagement ring.

Carys saw the ring in Adith is hands and looked at his perfectly carved face, she took a deep breath and smiled, I didn’t expect to see you here, it was a great surprise, I heard from Dr. Rich that you are one of the best cardio thoracic surgeon in Florida , I am happy for you”.

She didn’t know how to tell Adith that she was pregnant with his children, she was not ready to share everything she had been through.

“Dr. Richard is my dad's friend, my dad recommended me to work here, so I came”.

Adith raised his brows and asked “Where is your husband?”

Carys let out a slight laugh, shrugged her shoulders and said “I don’t have one, I am single”

Adith frowned “then what about the engagement?”

Carys replied “Cancelled”

“Seriously?”

Yes why? Carys asked

Adith murmured “f**k” and ran his fingers into his thick silky hair which is Carys's favourite, back then she loved to fondle his silky hair.

Carys looked him and smiled “eat your food, it's getting cold”

Adith nodded, seems like he lost his mind, they finished the lunch in silence, when they were walking out of the cafeteria both of them turned towards the nursery to have look at the kids.

Adith remembered her being pregnant in the engagement picture, he didn’t know how to ask, he felt muddled. He was also curious to know who were the kids being called as Dhruv and Tara.

Carys on the other hand was wondering whether to introduce the kids to him or keep them away from him. She wants to find out if he ready to be father, so gradually asked “Adith, do you have a girlfriend?”

Adith snapped his head towards her and looked into her big grey eyes, in no time his fiancé called him, he excused himself to attend the call,

“Hi Sam”

“Adith, my parents are here, they are inviting you to have dinner with us tonight”

Adith doesn’t want to go but he has no reason to object the invite.

He replied “Okay, call you later, I am on duty”

When he turned around, he saw Carys walking elegantly towards her office.

Adith had a surgery in the afternoon and was busy. In the evening Carys picked up her kids from the nursery and was walking towards the parking, Adith saw Carys with two cute kids from his office window.

His heart stirred, he could the side profile of the kids, they were so cute, silky dark hair, he couldn’t see their whole face, curiosity got over him, he craned his neck to have a better view but the kids hopped into the car.

Adit sighted and got back to his seat; he still had some work to do before he leaves for dinner.

Later Adith didn’t go home, he was already late from work so he went the restaurant, his fiancée Samitha and her parents were waiting for him, she was exhilarated, Samitha held Adith's ‘s arms and kissed him on his cheeks, Adith was not comfortable, he just smiled and said “sorry for being late”.

Samitha's parents were so happy to see their future son in law being so polite and nice. Samitha's dad Mr. Balakrishnan waved his hands and said “You are not late my son, take your seat”.

When the waiter arrived, they ordered some vegetarian food as they are Brahmins, Sam's mother Anchana started the discussion on their wedding which will be held in November, as it is a ten days wedding ceremony, they had lots to plan and long to do list, Adith was not interested in the wedding plan, he pursed his lips and said “ Aunty, Uncle, It would be better if you’ll discuss this with my parents as it will be held in India and it would be less troublesome if you arrange an event planner. They will take care of everything.” And he started digging into his plate.

The rest nodded and agreed, Sam tried to speak something with Adith but he showed no interest, he just nodded or smiled for everything she said, his mind was occupied with Carys and her children. Adith ate quickly and said “The dinner is on me, enjoy yourself, I have something to do” Sam gave him a hug and waved at him, Then Mr. & Mrs. Balakrishnan waved and said “Good night son”

Adith smiled and said “Good night”, he paid for the dinner and hopped into his SUV, he was curious to find about Carys's past after he left India, Adith and Carys were neighbours, when he crossed her condo, he tried to look through the window, the lights were on, he could hear the children giggling. Their voice made him smile, he wanted to have a look at the kids but he had no reason to knock at the door at this hour, he sighted and was about to walk to his condo, the door opened, Carys was carrying the garbage bag, seeing Adith she smiled and said, “seems you are late, were you working till now?”

“ Adith smiled and said, nope I had dinner with someone” Carys smiled back and said “ Okay “ and locked the door behind her and walked towards the elevator to throw the garbage in the bin downstairs, Adith stopped and said “ Carys I need to talk something with you” can you wait for me before you get to bed?”
