Chapter 1: Return of the Marked Omega
"Walk fast you b***h," the border guard muttered, his hand resting on his weapon as I stepped past the boundary line. I didn't look at him. The wind carried the cold scent of pine and charred wood through Ashmere, guiding me back into Midnight Claw territory. Four years. Four years since they dragged me to the border and threw me out. I had been exiled like a diseased animal after my first heat turned bloody, when the Alpha’s son clawed his own chest raw trying to tear his way into my room to claim me. I could still see the disgust etched into the elders' faces, the way my mother kept her eyes glued to the dirt, and the cold finality of their decision to discard me like a broken tool. But the pack had summoned me back. And the pull of the pack bond left me no choice but to obey. I walked the forest path with my chin up, breathing in the mountain air. A deep, hollow ache settled in my chest, the lingering phantom pain of a severed connection that only an outcast wolf could understand. Midnight Claw looked exactly the same. The heavy stone buildings bordered the camp, lit by the low, orange glow of lanterns preparation for the Lunar Eclipse Ceremony. Members of the pack bypassed me on the gravel path. Some pretended I wasn't there, while others glared with open hostility. "She came back?" a voice sneered from behind a roaring bonfire. "The cursed siren b***h with no shame." "She Should've died, be killed and burried," another muttered, spitting into the flames. The words stung, but I didn't let my pace falter. I had spent four years building a shell around myself that their whispers couldn't crack. My fingers twitched at my sides, but I kept my posture rigid. I wore a simple black cloak over a fitted slip dress that clung to my body, my silver hair falling down my back in wild, untamed waves, the only part of me they hadn't managed to humiliate. By the time I reached the center of camp, the ritual was already starting. The ancient stone amphitheater of Moon’s Hold was packed to the top tiers. Wolves sat shoulder-to-shoulder, their faces turned toward the sky as they waited for the shadow to cross the moon. The air was thick, heavy with the suffocating, dominant scents of competitive alphas, all charged with a restless, feral heat. I could feel their eyes tracking me. Dozens of them. Watching, weighing, wanting. I looked around for an empty space on the outer stone steps, but a hand suddenly gripped my forearm, pulling me into the shadow of a pillar. It was Lira, her eyes wide and frantic. "You shouldn't be here, Aylin," she whispered, her words rushed and trembling. "They only summoned you because they think your mark might awaken tonight. They want to see what kind of freak you'll become." A slow, cold smile pulled at my lips. "Do you think I care? If they want to see the freak I will become, then let them watch me i have already gone through hell." I pulled my arm from her grip and walked straight down the stone steps, stepping directly into the empty center of the sacred circle. A collective gasp swept through the tiers. Omegas, especially disgraced ones, never set foot in the center of the Hold. "what is she doing there, Get out of there!" the Beta roared, half-rising from his high seat among the elders. "You have no right to stand there on a sacred ground you cursed" The rest of his shout died in his throat. The edge of the moon began to turn black. The temperature in the clearing plummeted. The air grew heavy, thick, smelling of old earth and ancient blood. The whispers ceased instantly, every head snapping upward as a deep, blood-red shadow slowly drowned the moonlight. Then, the burning started. A raw scream tore from my throat as my knees slammed into the hard stone. My head thrusted back, my eyes rolling as a white-hot agony tore through my torso. It felt as though my ribs were being snapped and rebuilt from the inside out. I clawed at my chest, my fingernails digging into my skin right over my collarbone. It was waking up. The Siren Mark. A jagged, twisting brand burned its way through my skin, glowing with a brilliant golden light that bled into a core of pitch-black flame. The sheer force of the magic radiating from my chest hit the crowd like a physical wall. Several pack members tumbled off their stone benches. Low whimpers broke out among the males. Across the circle, an alpha doubled over and vomited onto the stone from the sudden, crushing pressure. And then came the scent. My scent. It exploded from my skin, sweet, thick, and dizzyingly potent. Half of the males in the amphitheater lunged forward, gripping the edges of the stone seats or falling to their hands and knees, panting heavily as their eyes locked onto me. I forced myself up, standing on trembling legs as the power washed over me in waves of heat. It was too intense, too electric. A sudden, slick warmth pooled between my thighs, a heavy ache of raw, need that made my breath catch in shame. I looked up, my vision clearing, and met a pair of glowing red eyes. Ryder. The last person on earth I wanted to face. The Alpha's heir, ruthless, and my sworn enemy. His body was locked tight, his fists balled at his sides as he fought against the invisible thread of the bond snapping into place between us. I expected the familiar glare of hatred. Instead, his gaze was dark, heavy, and dripping with a vicious, predatory hunger. Movement in the shadows caught my attention. Another figure stepped forward near the edge of the stone ring, clad in dark, sweeping robes. Tattoos crept up his neck and across his chest. Kael. The obsessed priest. I had never spoken to him, but he stared at me as if I were a deity descended from the heavens, his hands shaking slightly. And just beyond the central fire pit, Lucien stood. He didn't move. He didn't make a sound. He simply watched me with a gaze as cold and still as death. The mark on my sternum pulsed once more, sending a visible ripple of golden light through the air. All three of them flinched simultaneously, their hands twitching forward as if pulled by physical chains. The crowd erupted into chaos. Several wolves scrambled backward up the tiers to get away from the pressure, while others growled, their fangs baring in lustful aggression. In the middle of the screaming and snarling, I stood barefoot on the cold stone, branded, broken, and completely reborn.
