Chapter 90: Information from the City Hospital

1316 Words
Aki's Point of View Aki drove to the nearest hospital, which was the City Hospital. This morning he would not have ever thought that he would be coming back to this hospital the same day. He parked his car and then got out of it. He locked it and then started walking towards the main entrance of the hospital. When he reached the door, he remembered the woman from the morning. The feeling that he had seen the woman before or known her still had not disappeared from his guts. Nevertheless, for now, obtaining the information for the story coverage was more important. So, he pushed those feelings to the corner of his life and entered the hospital. As soon as he did, he checked the surroundings and searched for the reception table. It was on the left side from about 50 meters of the entrance. He walked towards it. There was a woman behind the table. She looked like she wanted to be somewhere else than here. As he approached her, he cleared his throat and spoke, "Excuse me? Would you be kind enough to help me?" And then smiled at the woman. The woman smiled back and spoke, "How may I help you?" While maintaining his smile, he spoke to the woman at the reception. "I am an editor at the local Newspaper agency. I am here to verify a story I heard from my junior." He said truthfully. The woman replied, "Okay, I will try to help you to the fullest length of my capabilities." Aki was slightly taken aback by how she had agreed to help. But then he thought that was just a formality. He then spoke, "Has a woman been brought to this hospital after a serious accident in the past few days?" The woman raised her eyebrows but nevertheless said, "Let me check it". Aki nodded and then looked around the reception hall. It was gloomy. He did not want to stay at the hospital for a long duration and hoped that he would get the information faster. After what seemed like an eternity, she finally looked up and said. "I am sorry but there is no record of any major accidents in the past few days." Aki thought, "Was I wrong to believe that the woman might have been brought to this hospital? Maybe she was taken to some other hospital? But it does not make sense." Just as he was thinking about all the possibilities of where the woman might have been taken to, he felt a sharp pain in his head. It was bearable and he would live through it, but it made his search for information a little hard. Without thinking twice, he started to walk towards the door. He wanted to leave and find a quiet place to relax. The pain could be from all the workload and from being stressed. He exited the hospital and walked straight to the area where he parked his car. He unlocked the car and opened the driver's door. He got in and rested his head on the steering wheel. He let out a groan. The pain was disturbing him and pulling him away from his job. As he kept resting his head on the steering wheel, suddenly he saw flashes of memories. He was not sure if it was memories. He saw a young girl who was about six or seven, walking around in a front yard. Then he saw her fall to the ground and scrape her knees. After that he saw a woman in a pool of blood and lifeless. He hurriedly opened his eyes. He was not asleep but was just resting with his eyes closed. He was utterly confused and at the same time the scene made his heart ache. Something about the woman made him feel worried and sad. To say that it was a dream would be wrong because he was not sleeping. But he did not have any memories about it. It was heartbreaking and he hoped that he knew what it was. "Was it memories from when I was young? And that I had forgotten all about it until now? Was that even possible?" He thought. He groaned. "What is this?" He talked to himself. Something did not feel right to think that those might be memories from when he was young. He did not remember most of the things from his childhood. Then he realized something as he remembered the woman's face in the pool of blood. It was the same woman he had seen earlier that day at the entrance of the hospital door. He could not believe it but he knew he was a hundred percent sure because he remembered the woman accurately. Was it a coincidence that he saw her in the morning or was it something else? Aki thought that it would be best if he took a rest at his own comfort zone without any disturbances from outside. No calls from colleagues or from the office for that matter. And certainly not causing any one else any problems either. His focus and attention was so divided that when he was ready to go home and started the engine, his car jerked quite vigorously. His car was a manual-gear and the gear was in reverse so when he did not step on the clutch before starting the engine, it jerked a lot. “I’m not usually this clumsy. This is definitely bad, I really should go home and take a rest before these weird scenes and memories of someone get worse”, he thought to himself while sighing. He rubbed his eyes hard, opened them and blinked for a good few times. Then he shifted his gear to neutral, started the engine, slowly and carefully with all his attention, accelerated out of the parking area of the hospital. “Do NOT be distracted. You’re driving right now. You don’t want to die right? FOCUS!!” he reminded himself as he drove carefully with both his hands on the steering wheel. Cautiously looking around and noticing every detail. From every pedestrians that he could see walking to the slightest of rusts on traffic lights. As he was nearing an intersection, a flash of memory slipped his mind. A little girl sitting on the lap of who seemed like her mother, sitting by a fireplace reading a book. The girl’s eyes was full of curiosity and content, all the while listening to her mother read her the book. Aki suddenly steered a hard left and braked so hard that his whole body lunged forward slightly from his driver’s seat. His messenger bag and a smaller bag in the back seat fell. He missed an adult cat crossing the street by an inch. A driver in a hummer honked furiously at Aki and gestured to his own eyes and pointed at Aki. “Sorry!” yelled Aki with half his head outside of the window. He then quickly adjusted back to his lane and drove slowly this time. “This is worse than I imagined it to be” thought Aki as he continued to hurry home but steadily and with extra precaution this time. He slapped himself every now and then to let him feel pain from the slap to stay focused. This helped a little as he saw another one of these so called ‘memories’ flash in his mind. This time, he saw a baby in the arms of a doctor. The room looked similar to a hospital room with all the sophisticated equipment. The baby cried and the mother was drenched in sweat, pale and was breathing heavily. Aki felt a little protective of the baby instinctively. He felt like the baby was his destiny and all he ever lived for was to make sure that no harm ever came to her.
