Chapter 30: For Rin’s Happiness.

Aki’s Point of View

He was floating around Rin’s room when she woke up. She looked rejuvenated and Aki was glad that Rin was starting to looked better already. Rin started to get out of the bed but she stopped in her tracks. Aki looked at her to see if anything was wrong. She looked a little lost. She also looked sad.

Aki racked through his brain to think what she would be thinking about. He thought hard but still could not come to a conclusion. He was close to giving up thinking about it. Just then, he saw tears falling from Rin’s eyes. Aki panicked.

Aki did not know what he should do. So, Aki did the one thing he could do; Heal. He put his hands slowly on her head. He started channeling his energy from his body into Rin. Rin smiled through her tears. Since he had his hands on her head, Aki could see what Rin was thinking about.

He smiled as he also remembered that day she asked her mother to sing her the lullaby so that she could record it.

*Nine years ago*

Aki was floating around in Rin’s room as usual. He watched as the moment Rin opened her eyes, she got out of the bed and ran to the living room. He followed her out of the room because he did not want Rin to hurt herself by falling. Her mother was sitting on the sofa and watching the television. Aki watched as she raised her hands and signaled her to come where she was. Rin smiled and ran to her mother’s lap and hugged her.

“Good Morning mommy”, Rin said.

“Good morning darling”, her mother replied.

Rin leaned in and whispered something in her mother’s ear. Aki could not hear it because he was not near. Her mother laughed. Rin also laughed after hearing her laugh. Then she said, “I do not remember anything” and stuck out her tongue at Rin.

Rin laughed and in between her laughter also stuck out her tongue. Then she said, “Mommy, you said you will let me record you singing the lullaby.”

Aki smiled looking at them. He loved when Rin was with her mother. She always smiled and laughed together.

Her mother replied, “But darling, it is 10 am right now. Lullabies are sung at night. To let you sleep” and tickled her.

Rin started laughing and said, “But mommy, I want to record it. Can I please record it?” She had her big blue puppy eyes she always showed when she wanted something.

After seeing those puppy eyes, her mother could not say no. It was not just her mother. Anyone would give her the world if she showed her puppy eyes. However, Rin did not usually show her puppy eyes to anyone else apart from her mother.

“Okay honey, go get your iPod and I will go get my ukulele.” Her mother said.

Rin nodded and ran to get it. Aki followed behind her. After she got it from her room, she ran back to where her mother was. She was getting the ukulele from her room. Together they walked back into the living room. Aki levitated behind them. After getting there, Rin looked at her and said, “Mommy? Are you ready?”

Her mother nodded and Rin pressed “record”.

Her mother started playing the ukulele and started singing the lullaby. Aki had heard this every night. So, when she sang, he also hummed to it.  

*end of flashback*

Rin was sobbing so hard. Aki wanted to hug her and say everything will be alright but he could not do that. Rin had the chance of feeling his presence the more he touched her. However, since he had always gently touched her head and healed her, Aki did not hesitate to do that. He continued channeling his energy from within to Rin’s body and healing her. Of course, it did not work.

Aki felt that the least he could do was heal the pain in her eyes and head while she cried. So, he did that. Rin continued sobbing but she walked towards the drawer near her bed and took out the iPod. She connected it with the earphones and played the recording. One look at the iPod and Aki knew it was the recording of the lullaby. She started sobbing harder and cried her eyes out. Aki could not bear it but he continued healing her. This was the first time that Aki felt his ability was useless. If he could not help Rin with it, what was the use of it? He wished he could heal Rin’s heart and soul but it did not work.

After a while, Rin slowly stopped crying and she checked the time. She hurriedly went into the bathroom. After she was done in the bathroom, she changed into some clothes. She grabbed her bag and car key walked out of her bedroom. Aki followed behind her.

She put her bag and her car key on the table near the main door. She walked to the kitchen and washed her hands. Aki watched as she took out a bowl, two eggs, a strip of bacon from the fridge, and a packet of bread. She cracked the egg and put it in the bowl.

Aki continued watching as she cooked breakfast. He remembered when she used to sit on the kitchen counter as she watched her mother make breakfast. Now, she was all grown up and she was whisking the eggs, putting the bread into the toaster, and frying the bacon. After she was done, she grabbed a plate and put the eggs, the bacon, and the bread on it.

She carried the plate to the dining table and sat down. She grabbed a glass and poured the mango juice. Then she started eating.

*20 minutes later*

Rin finished eating and washed the dishes. She dried her hands and then walked towards the main door. She picked her bag and grabbed the key. She also grabbed the house key. Aki followed her as she opened the door and walked outside. She turned around and locked it. She walked towards the car and unlocked it. She got inside the car. Aki also got into the front seat and watched as she put the car key in. She started the car. Then she started driving out of the gate and into the road.

After driving for a while she stopped the car suddenly and looked in the mirror. Aki was confused as to why she stopped the car.

Rin opened the window and she put her hand out of the window. As soon as she did that, it started drizzling. She opened the car door and got outside. She closed her eyes and turned her head up towards the sky. She let the rainfall on her face. She smiled. Watching her smile, Aki smiled too. She still had her love for rain. Whenever she used to get drenched in the rain while she was young, Aki would be there near her to make sure she did not get sick. He was pretty sure that Rin got her love for rain from her mother. He wondered if she still loved the ocean and bubble baths. These were the two other things for which she had started to love because of her mother.

The rain started getting heavier and Rin quickly got into her car and started it. She started driving but stopped at a convenience store. Aki followed her out of the car and into the store. He watched as she bought a packet of cigarettes and a bottle of water. After Aki followed her back to her car, she drove towards the isolated place where he found her yesterday.

When they reached there, Aki saw a man leaning on the car. As soon as Rin saw him, she looked happy. Aki was now a little curious about who this man was.

Rin quickly parked her car and got out. Aki followed as she ran to him.

“Haru, you are fine right?” Rin asked.

Aki thought, “Oh this guy’s name is Haru?”

Haru replied, “Yes Rin, I am fine.”

After hearing that, Rin looked relieved.

The man continued, “I am so sorry that I could not make it yesterday. I was free during the time you asked me in the first class. But then, something came up and I had to visit my grandfather. After I got the call, I wanted to tell you that I could not come. However, I could not find you nor did I have your number to contact you. I am really sorry. Please forgive me.”

Aki thought, “So, yesterday you were waiting for this guy?” and looked at Rin with a disapproved look.

The man continued, “Let me make it up to you? Let us meet up after class today. I want to take you somewhere. We can leave your car at the college parking and leave in mine. We will be a little late. Is that fine?”

Aki was scared when he saw tears in Rin’s eyes and he went on his “protective mode”. However, he heard Rin say, “Haru. Thank you for inviting me. I was thinking that I might have been a burden to you. I was thinking about what to say to you or how to apologize but instead, you made me feel that I am not a burden. Thank you for that." Then she smiled at the man.

Aki became calmer. Rin trusts this person. If she does, I am fine with that.  

The man spoke, "No, Rin. There was no need for you to apologize. It was mainly my fault. And besides, you could never be a burden.”

Haru added, “Now before anything else, can we exchange our numbers?” and he smiled.

Rin smiled and nodded. They exchanged their numbers. They then lit a cigarette each and started smoking. In between their puffs, they talked about many things.

Aki just listened to them talking. He noticed that Rin smiled more when she was with him. He was not going to fully trust this guy. It was his job to save Rin from whatever is coming in her future. Even if Rin trusts him, Aki decided that he will be on guard.

Aki heard Haru ask Rin what her favorite color is.

Aki thought, “Wrong move young man. She is not ready to talk about her mother.”

Aki gently put his hands on Rin’s head in an attempt to calm her down. He heard her say that it used to be blue.

The man spoke, “Blue like in the color of your eyes?”

Aki felt Rin nod under his hand and then Aki saw what she remembered. It was the time when her mother told her that blue was her favorite color because it was the color of Rin’s eyes. From then on, Rin also loved the color.

Aki heard the man speak, “The color of your eyes is pretty”.

Aki looked at him and thought, “Whoa easy young man. Already flirting?”

Then they talked about the place that Haru had asked Rin to go with him. Aki just stayed near Rin. He watched as they smiled and laughed. It actually made him happy. Seeing Rin smile and laugh like this, he wanted her to always be like this. This was the reason why he decided not to interfere between them and let Rin go with Haru tonight. Aki was still going to be near though.

After some time, they got into their cars. Aki followed Rin and into her car. Haru was following them. They parked their cars and then got out to walk to their class. Rin and Haru walked together. Aki was following behind them.

They entered their class and they sat down. The lecturer came in shortly. Aki just stayed near the window. It was next to where Rin was sitting.

Through the first hour, Aki was bored.

“How can humans listen to people talk for this long?” he thought. However, he was wrong. Most people were not listening to the one talking. They were either on their phones, sleeping, or whispering to each other.

He sighed and looked at Rin. She was taking notes.

“At least one of them is doing what she should be doing.” Aki thought and smiled. His gaze shifted to Haru who was also taking notes. He rolled his eyes. “Okay, two of them.” He thought.

After that, Aki followed Rin to another class. He watched as Haru ask Rin if they could eat lunch together and walk the other way. The rest of the class until lunch passed by pretty fast. Aki followed Rin from one class to another and watched her take notes.

They met Haru for lunch. After that, Aki followed Rin to two more classes.

*Two hours passed by*

Aki followed Rin to the library. This was the place where they had arranged to meet after their classes. They waited for Haru for around a minute and a half.

After Haru reached, Aki followed them out of the college. Since Haru said that they will be taking his car, Rin followed Haru into his car. Haru opened the door of the front seat for Rin. After she got in, Haru went around and got into the driver’s seat. Aki did not get into the car with them. However, he was going to near if any danger approaches Rin.

He watched as they leave. Aki took out his wings and flew up into the sky. He followed from a small distance.
