Chapter 14: Vision-Holders

Haru’s Point of View

Haru waited patiently for his grandfather to speak. He looked at the clock in his room. It was 5 pm. He watched the clock’s second hand go all around the clock. Even though he was patiently waiting and only one minute had passed, it felt like an eternity.

With every tick of the clock, he started becoming anxious. After about two minutes had passed, his grandfather finally spoke.

“This is something that my grandfather has told me. And to him by his grandfather. Your father probably has not told you anything about it. So, I will start from the first. Our ancestors had a special bloodline. The first person who gained the ability of vision or otherwise known as the first vision holder lived in the late 1700s. It is a little mysterious how he gained the ability. My grandfather told me that an enigmatic woman offered him this ability. The first vision holder was facing some type of crisis due to which he had no other option than to accept it. With this ability, they were able to live off well and generously. However, as people say good things come with a price, the woman had a condition. This ability was to be used to save a particular person. In the time of the first vision holder, it was to save the niece of the woman who offered him the ability. The first vision holder promised the woman that he will save the niece and then she disappeared. After this, their family lived normally but he had not fulfilled that promise. Since he was the first, he had no experience and knowledge of how to make use of visions. He tried, learned about it, and finally got to know about the niece. However, he was too late. The niece had died and the woman appeared before him again. She told him that since he could not save her niece, she will curse his family and his future generation. She cursed that each male in a generation will gain the ability by leaving the previous holder. And with every generation, the vision holder will have the task of saving a person. If someone from his generation is successful then the curse will end. However, if they fail to save the person, the curse will go on. The vision holders will have the ability to see the future but they will be burdened. For the entirety of their lives, they will be burdened with the feelings of all those past generations who could not save the destined person.”

Haru was stunned. He did not know so much was hidden about the ability.  

His grandfather looked at him and spoke again.

“You have the ability now, so as you know, no one in our family has been able to save the destined person. I feel so sad and guilty that because of my failure, I had to burden my son and now you. You got the visions to save a person right?”

Haru spoke, “Yes grandpa, I have.”

His grandfather said, “How long do you have?”

Haru was surprised yet again.

His grandfather noticed his surprise and said.

“Do not be surprised Haru. There is usually a time limit that is provided in the first vision. So, how long?”

Haru looked at him and replied, “Two weeks maximum”.

His grandfather told him, “Okay. There is another thing that I need to tell you.”

As soon as he said this, there was a knock at the door.

Haru got up to open the door.

It was his father. 

He spoke, "We need to talk about something Haru".
