Rin’s Point of View.
For the whole ride back to the city, Rin did not feel like talking. She was still absorbing the mesmerizing sight of the fireworks she had seen earlier. She then realized that she should have taken a picture of it. However, she forgot to even think of that.
"I am such an i***t," she thought.
However, there was nothing she could do about it other than wait for another fireworks show.
“It would be nice if I can come back here for another fireworks show. This time I will be the one inviting Haru.” She thought.
She then realized that she was being rude by not talking to Haru and giving him company when he drove. She also noticed that the ride was so plain with no music.
“I do not think I am a very good company for him. The least I can do is play some music so that the car ride is not boring.” She thought.
She then asked him if she can connect her phone with the stereo. She heard him say yes. So she did and then played some music throughout the ride until they reached the college.
After they reached the college, Haru stopped his car. They both got out of the car.
Rin then turned towards Haru and spoke, “Thank you so much for today. The drive to the place, and the fireworks were amazing. I had so much fun today.” She smiled at Haru and she really meant what she said. It had been an amazing day.
Haru looked at her and smiled. Then he said.
“Anything for you.”
As soon as she heard that, Rin’s heart started beating fast and she could feel her face become hot.
“Oh my god. What is Haru saying? Anything for me? What does that mean? Does he like me? Is he joking? What is he saying?” Rin started thinking those and she was about to start panicking about it when she heard him speak.
“Um….. Ri...Rin. I.. I..am very sorry about that. I do not know what I was thinking. Can you forgive me?”
As soon as she heard that, she shook all those thoughts away. "Haru is a good friend but there is no way that he is going to like someone like me. Yes, there is no way" she told herself and calmed herself. However, somewhere inside her, a part of her thought that Haru stuttering was so cute.
She then spoke, “It is okay. Let us not worry about that. People can make mistakes." Then she smiled at him.
Then she heard him say, “Thank you Rin,".
By then, Rin checked the time and it was 8:45 pm.
Since it was late and she did not inform her father that she was going to be late, it was time to go home. Then Rin spoke, “Haru, it is getting late. I have to go home or my father is going to worry. Thank you again for tonight. See you on Monday?”
Haru smiled at her and spoke, “No problem. Drive safe. See you on Monday.”
She then opened her car and got into it. She put her bag on the passenger’s seat and took out her phone. She had not touched her phone after they reached the place. So she checked it. She had ten missed calls from her father. She did not expect it. Besides, her phone was on silent so she did not hear it. She did not call back as she was going home anyway. She drove out of the college parking and headed home.
She reached her house. She parked her car in the parking area and got out of her car. There she noticed a car that she did not recognize. She thought that maybe it belonged to a friend of her father. She wondered why he bothered to call her when he already had a guest in the house.
She walked towards the main door and rang the doorbell. Her father opened the door and as soon as he did, he spoke sternly.
“Where are you? Can’t you see the time? And why did you not pick up my calls?”
Rin was not fazed by that. She did not care about why she was being scolded. She replied coldly, “I had some work.”
Then she just started to directly walk to her room. She ignored whatever her father was saying. As she walked by the kitchen, there was a smell that caught her attention. She slowly backed up and looked in the direction of the kitchen. There was a woman who had a ladle in her hand.
Just then her father caught up behind her. Rin heard him speak, “You do not listen to anything I say. Anyways let us leave that discussion for now. The reason I called you was because there is someone I would like you to meet.”
Rin’s eyes filled with horror and her hands started shaking. She spoke but her voice was cracking, “Dad, who is she? And what is she doing in our kitchen?”
She hoped that it is not what she was thinking it is.
As she heard her father speak, her eyes were filled with tears and they started falling down her cheeks.
“Honey, Can you come here? I want to introduce you to my daughter.”
Rin felt as if all the energy left her body. Her legs were shivering. She looked at her hands with her eyes full of tears. “Honey?” she thought. “Why are you calling another woman ‘honey’ dad?” she thought.
Just then, another bomb was dropped.
Her father spoke, “Rin. Meet the woman I fell in love with. Your new mother. We are going to get married soon.”
Rin mustered up all her energy to look at her father. He was smiling as if the woman meant everything to him.
That was it for Rin. She did not say anything or do anything. She turned away in the direction of her room and walked towards it. She felt like she had just lost everything that was left. Somewhere inside her, she wanted to fix her relationship with her father.
As she walked, she heard voices in the distance calling her names. However, that did not matter to her. In fact, the voices were becoming more distant. She was started to feel woozy.
She quickly walked to her room and closed the door. She also locked it. Then she slowly fell on the floor. Her legs gave out. She pulled her legs up and hugged her knees. Then she started sobbing. She sobbed and sobbed.
In between her sobs, she whispered. “Mommy. How can dad forget you in just five years? He bought a new woman home today and he said that he will marry her soon. The worst part of it? He said that she is going to be my “new mother”. How could he say that? Mommy I miss you. I wish you were here with me right now.”
She then rested her face on her knees. She continued sobbing until she was so exhausted that she fell asleep right there.
