Chapter 8: “Haru” and “Rin”

It was 9 am when Haru started his car and drove towards the isolated place. Since it took him around 20 minutes to reach college, he estimated that he would reach the place in 14 or 15 minutes. As he drove, the thought of seeing the woman soon brought a smile to his face. He put on some music and hummed to it and continued driving towards the place.

As he passed a shop, he realized that he did not have any cigarettes. “I need to stop at this shop to buy some”, he muttered and stopped his car near the shop. He got out of the car and went inside the shop. He bought a packet of cigarettes and went back to the car. He checked the time. It was 9: 15 am. He started driving towards the place.

Haru reached the place around 9:20 am. He got out of the car and lit a cigarette. As he smoked, he wondered when she would reach here. He was sort of nervous and excited at the same time. He was nervous because he was worried about what is going to happen and how things will unfold. He was excited because he would be seeing her.

After what felt like an eternity, a car pulled up a little further away from where his car was parked at. He looked at it and immediately a smile made its way up to his face because it was her car. He watched as she got out of the car and leaned on the car. She took out a cigarette and lighted it.

No matter how excited he was and no matter how nervous he was moments before, the moment he saw her, an immense feeling of ecstasy poured into him. He continued watching the gorgeous woman and noticed her beautiful eyes looking at a cherry blossom tree. In an instant, Haru felt a rush of mixed emotions of anger and sadness. It was with the cherry blossom tree that this woman might disappear at the end of the spring.

He quickly let go of this thought because he did not want it to happen. He mentally promised himself again that he is going to do everything he can to save this woman. However, even with this determination, he could not help but feel the slightly eerie feeling of devastation that something terrible is going to happen.

He shook his head and focused his gaze back on the woman. However, his heart skipped a beat when she turned around and looked at him. Their eyes met for a brief second and Haru could not continue looking at her without getting embarrassed so he looked away. His heart was beating way too fast, just like he had run a marathon.

“Oh my god, she is so pretty.” He thought.

He continued his smoke and attempted his best to not look embarrassed. He made an effort to lift his eyes to look at her but he could not. “Why can’t I?” he thought. After mustering the strength, which he felt like the strength he was going to have for the next ten days, Haru raised his head and looked at her.

She was throwing away her cigarette and opened the door of her car. She got in and started her car.

“Why does she look like she is in a hurry?” he thought and checked the time.

“Oh s**t, classes”. He muttered.

Before he turned to open the door of his car, he could not help but look at the car that was driving away. As she was driving away, Haru felt like he should not let this woman go out of his sight. He wanted to run after the car, open the door and hug the woman. He wanted to tell her that everything will be alright and that he will not let anything happen to her. He did not want to ever let her go away from him.

However, he could not do it. At least not at the moment. If he talked to her or attempted to talk to her right now, who knows what might happen. In his vision, when he talked to her today she went further away from his grasp and she eventually dies. Haru could not risk that.

There will come a right moment to talk to her and Haru will patiently wait for it. He got into his car and started driving towards the college. He reached there in five minutes and searched for a parking space. After he found it, he parked it and went to his first class. It was English literature and he felt a wave of happiness as he will be seeing her again.

As he entered the class, he saw her at the same seat as yesterday and she was again looking out the window. She looked extremely sad. Something inside of Haru told him to speak to her. It was not a vision but it felt like one. It was a different kind of force that was pushing him into talking to her. One that was impossible to ignore. He made a mental note to research it when he gets home.

With this, he made up his mind to talk to her. He hurriedly went to the seat next to her and sat down. As he expected, she did not look towards him the moment he sat down. After few seconds, she looked at him. Haru could see that she was shocked to see him sitting near her. At this moment, Haru looked at her and smiled.

She was extremely dazzling but there was a sadness in her blue eyes which made Haru's heartache a lot.

He continued looking at her and said, “Hey, I am Haru”.

Just after he said those words, he saw her eyes lift and the sadness leaving her eyes.

She flashed a beautiful smile at him and Haru was sure that every life in him has left his body. He felt like he could just die right now and he would be happy.

He heard her say, “Hi, I am Rin”.

As soon as she said that, the lecturer came and started the class.

All Haru could think about the next few minutes was Rin’s smile.
